Damn. You put into perspective that there were many people born in the 1800s that saw Spielberg’s early work in theaters.

Yeah, if the next movie were to have Indy be the same age as Ford will be during shooting, it would take place around 1976!

That's great for real life physical activity, but for a character being played by someone who's close to 80 (and will look no younger than 70 at best) and is supposed to be jumping, diving, running and fighting - it looks ridiculous and stretches plausibility even more than it already is.

I'll lose major respect for Spielberg if he does this. If you think the outrage for Star Wars and Ghostbusters was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet if you think this okay.

Of course you will.

Regardless, this originates from The Sun. So take it with a grain of salt.

To be clear I have nothing against women in starring roles (the new Tomb Raider was a film in a similar vein that was quite fun) but I hate anytime that franchises try and shoehorn a change like that in place. I get wanting to continue on the name value but no one knows an Indiana Joan character. Just come up with something original or spin-off a character rather than making it so forced. It just comes off as desperation to appease social groups but piggybacking off of something that’s successful because of a guy. Hopefully it never happens.

The lead candidate for the female Indy has already been selected...

I don't mind gender swaps if done right.
Ghostbusters remake sucked ass, but the genderswap wasn't the issue.

Though in Indiana Jones case, swapping to a woman may end up making it feel too much like Tomb Raider.

It will continue, but it won't have a gender swap i am sure.

“We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan. And there would be nothing wrong with that,”

Agreed. Ghostbusters issues were not the gimmick gender swap. Shitty cast, actively alienating the fanbase, and being an unfunny movie were all reasons that it sucked ass.

I did always think that Tomb Raider was essentially a female Indiana Jones. I never had a problem with it. In fact, I enjoyed the Jolie Tomb Raider films but have yet to see the new one. The Mummy movies also always gave me an Indy vibe .

Because clearly a woman cannot have the last name Jones.

Is that a real quote from Speilberg? Because wow.

A team of female Ghostbusters makes enough sense, in theory. A female Indiana Jones really doesn't.

Just make a new movie featuring a charismatic relic hunter, and maybe give her a whip.

Or ... yeah, hope for a Tomb Raider sequel. Alicia Vikander was actually pretty terrific.

Not surprising.
Spielberg is and has been the MOST politically correct film director in Hollywood.

And you're right...fans would go FRICKIN' nuts if he tried to make the character of IJ female (Illinois Jones anyone?).

Does Spielberg even have a say? Don't Disney own the film rights?

He's liberal for the most part, but "the MOST politically correct film director" in a town that has given us Michael Moore, Oliver Stone, Sean Penn and Spike Lee (among many others)? I strongly doubt that.

Yeah agreed with this. On paper a female Ghostbusters wasn’t a bad idea just the way it was done and the actresses they chose ruined the idea. A character that’s already established like Indiana Jones though I hate the idea of changing gender or race to fill the needs of people wanting to make something more socially acceptable or to diversify.

Also to me it kind of comes off like hurting that cause because it’s like you’re saying those groups can’t make something popular on their own without having to follow in the footsteps of something established by someone who in this case is both male and white.

Michael Moore just does documentaries. Spike Lee's films don't come across as politically correct all. Sean Penn, haven't seen his films.
To me, politically correct is playing it safe for fear of offending someone.

But companies, studios, etc generally don't attempt diversity out of the goodness of their hearts. I'm assuming they do it because they believe there now exists a market for it that they can tap into.

A female action hero/archaeologist/treasure hunter? Awesome! But...we already have Lara Croft. But yeah, another one in that archetype, cool. But why not just create a whole new franchise then?

A continuation of the Indiana Jones saga featuring the daughter or granddaughter of Indiana Jones? Cool. Just don't try to shoe horn her name as being Indiana Jones too.

Simply changing the gender of the character...that's stupid. But then again, I think it's dumb to continue the franchise. The swagger that Harrison Ford brought to the role is what made the character work. You swap him out for Magnum P.I. or Alden Ehrenreich and it's not the same character.

Also to me it kind of comes off like hurting that cause because it’s like you’re saying those groups can’t make something popular on their own without having to follow in the footsteps of something established by someone who in this case is both male and white.
Yes and no.
It can come off as gimmicky.
I mean, it depends.
If for example, Eon Productions announces the next James Bond will be black, it will come across as a gimmick to me. And if they cast a black Pierce Brosnan type, worse.
But if they simply have a script, and it's business as usual, and Idris Elba ended up auditioning and winning the role, against other white actors, I'll be like yeah! that's something different but it makes sense. Elba does come across as very 007-ish. I can see it.

Okay, so if Politically Correct means playing it safe, he's pretty safe these days with Lincoln, Bridge of Spies and The Post. But it wasn't that long ago he made Amistad, Munich, Minority Report and War of the Worlds and those didn't play it nearly as safe (excluding the ending of War of the Worlds, of course).

I think a lot of filmmakers mellow as they enter their Seventies and become less confrontational and controversial. I wouldn't hold that too much against him. Now Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, on the other hand....

Fuck this. Fuck you Spielberg. There is no way in hell you would do this, but the mere fact that you are willing and able to toss that out in a conversation ... I don't know if you think you are being cute or funny, but fuck you. The last bit of good will was used up on the fucking abomination you delivered the last time. You have no respect left for the property, so just fuck off and let somebody who cares step in.

You can try to claim this is a sexist rant, but it is not. It is about disrespect for the property. If he wants to make Tomb Raider, go make Tomb Raider. He wiped his ass once on the series, this is just uncalled for.

(Sorry, somebody pissed in my Wheaties today.)
