Nah. Collection agencies will take over their debt. It happened to me with Hollywood Video. Or maybe it was because I waited so long.

I remember when Blockbustet started to rent out PC games; that only lasted for six months but I was able to grab tons of games for cheap when they ended up selling their stock. Sam and Max like new with the hint book for five bucks, that was an epic win.

Blockbuster got irritating when they started selling stuffed animals and toys.
I understood the candy and popcorn, but toys? ... stuffed animals?

That's why I don't feel sorry for them- as I said in another thread, they could have at least TRIED to cater to people like me who buy movies and don't rent anymore, but they figured toys and crap would be better.
I want a REAL video store preserved- with boxes facing outwards with Beta in the front since it was smaller, with VHS behind it, and a partitioned area for the porn (some places just smashed the porn boxes and put them in a binder, which you then had to ask to look through.) One of the first video stores I went to had all their stock (less than 200 movies) behind a big glass case, with one window for each movie (the X-rated ones just had the spines facing out). Most stores also had a page or so you could take listing all the movies they had for rent.
They should keep one or two open as a museum. To show future generations what hell we had to go through to get entertainment.

Sometime in 1993 or 1994, my local Blockbuster decided to close down its then-relatively new anime section and interfile the anime titles with the regular titles in its alphabetical section. I complained and the clerk agreed with me, but there was nothing he could do. I stopped going there after that.

Yeah, it's been years for me too since I've been a Blockbuster. I was still subscribed to Blockbuster home delivery, but for the last several months it went in the toilet quickly. Big name movies would sit at the top of my queue for weeks at a time, listed as "Very High Demand". I finally signed with Netflix and they shipped those same movies the next day.

Here's an article from my local news station.
Now that I think about it. I miss going to the old video stores. looking around at all the box art. Waiting for that one movie to be returned by 3PM to snag it. Looking at the wall of new releases. I sad.
NATIONAL CITY (CBS 8) - The days of going to Blockbuster to pick out a movie are officially coming to an end.
Blockbuster's current owner, Dish Network, announced that it is closing its last 300 locations nationwide.
Since National City resident Jesus Deleon retired, he's made a sort of second career out of renting movies from Blockbuster.
"I rent six a day, so times 7, that's 42 a week," he said.
So the news that approximately 300 blockbuster stores nationwide will close by early January came as a blow.
"I think I will quit watching movies. I watched so many already, so there's no sense watching more," Deleon said.

"I'm not really surprised, because nowadays there's Netflix and Red Box," a consumer said.
At its peak, Blockbuster operated more than 9,000 stores nationwide, with a market value of $5 billion. But with the rising popularity of streaming video through the internet, the demand for video rentals has drastically declined.
That demand hasn't diminished in Alma Dagar's household. Her family relies on Blockbuster for their Friday evening movie tradition.
"Usually we make it a family night thing. Now what are we going to do?" she said.

And while the answer to that for many may be turning to the internet for movies, that's not necessarily a happy ending for some loyal Blockbuster customers.
"I'm old school. I like going out and renting movies," a Blockbuster customer said.
"I'm not into internet things. I like meeting people, that's the best thing for me," Deleon said.
While all Blockbuster stores nationwide will close by early January, Blockbuster has also announced it will discontinue its DVD mail service in mid-December.

I'm more sad for all of the people who'll lose their jobs.
I don't like it either, but the future is coming, and it's coming fast. The world is changing so rapidly now just keeping up is difficult, much less figuring of what the hell to do with my life.

This is a bit like being sad for people who got into the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.
