Re: Blockbuster closing down remaining stores.
Well this is truly shocking news. Who knew they still had open stores?

The end of an era

Re: Blockbuster closing down remaining stores.
Sometime in 1993 or 1994, my local Blockbuster decided to close down its then-relatively new anime section and interfile the anime titles with the regular titles in its alphabetical section. I complained and the clerk agreed with me, but there was nothing he could do. I stopped going there after that.

Re: Blockbuster closing down remaining stores.
They should keep one or two open as a museum. To show future generations what hell we had to go through to get entertainment.
Remember driving all the way to a video store? And finding out that the movie you wanted to watch was already rented? And having to *gasp* rent your second or third choice instead? |
Re: Blockbuster closing down remaining stores.
I honestly thought they closed them all already. Oh well. Kinda sad that an entire industry could be replaced with an unmanned free standing box the size of a midsized refrigerator.

Re: Blockbuster closing down remaining stores.
The few around my area all closed w/in the last few years. Not surprised to hear the rest will soon be gone.

Re: Blockbuster closing down remaining stores.
I doubt we'll ever have a thread dedicated to former store locations and how they're being used now.

Re: Blockbuster closing down remaining stores.
Fuck Blockbuster. I had to rent Beta tapes from small Mom & Pop rentals. Most the time they only had 1 copy so you needed to spend about an hour looking for something. You also had to return the tape the next day.

That suddenly made driving to Blockbuster to stare at a wall of empty boxes irrelevant. |

Re: Blockbuster closing down remaining stores.
I only rented VHS' from Blockbuster from about 1992-1996 then I graduated to LD'sd and told them to fuck off.
I did come back a year or two ago to scoop up leftover BD's for $2-$3 a piece when they closed the ones in my area. Good riddance. |

Nope. When Blockbuster was around I was in college and it was right across the street from our campus. If they didn't have the rental I wanted I just downloaded it.
Try downloading a movie on a 56k modem. I dare you. I remember in the late 90s PC game demos were quickly escalating in size. I remember the first time I saw a demo that was over 100 MB and I was like, "Fuck this is going to take forever to download." |
