It would be good to do a close ended franchise rather then a franchise that just keeps spitting them out just to spit them out.

Agreed. Whether or not you liked Chronicles of Riddick (most didn't, I did), the ending of that film was a big deal that needs to be resolved with more than just a few throwaway lines.

Chronicles of Riddick was a weird movie for me. I wanted to love it. It looked an old issue of Heavy Metal magazine had come to life with images from Bilal, Moebius, and Gimenez filling the screen. But everything else about the movie left a bit to be desired.

I liked Chronicles of Riddick but it should have not been a sequel to Pitch Black. Heck, the Riddick in CoR felt like a totally different character than the one from PB.

Manohla Dargis gives it a positive review in The New York Times:

I like her closing lines:
http://movies.nytimes.com/2013/09/06...ef=movies&_r=0
I like her closing lines:
Healed and steeled, Riddick, armed with a blade stuck in an enormous bone and flanked by a faithful pet with sharp teeth and hilarious moves, takes all of them on with and without his trademark goggles. The dust churns, the clouds gather, the bullets fly, the men fall. The Diesel rises.

Anyone ever play the Riddick game for XBOX? Or it's remake for the current gen systems? I heard it rocked on its original format but that remake of the game was alright. Kind of want to get it.

The remake is fine (Escape from Butcher Bay), it's the sequel that wasn't very good (Assault on Dark Athena)
Assault on Dark Athena includes the remake of Butcher Bay

Assault on Dark Athena isn't BAD, it's just not as good as Escape from Butcher Bay. But they're included on the same disc, so play it.

I'll give this an extra half star just for the fleeting shot of Starbuck's bare breast
I enjoyed this - but seeing the previous 2 as a refresher might have been a good idea

I couldn't remember, as it has been a long time since I've seen part 1.

Saw this today. I really really liked it. It totally is such a genre picture. Lean where it needs to be, expands to a needed point, and really well made.
Really loved the cast and how the story played out. The ending actually surprised me. Didn't expect to see it go that way, not bad but unexpected and kind of fresh to see the hero go like that.
The whole necromonger bit is in like the first 10 mins or something. Leads to where the story kind of brins you and kind of leaves it there. There's shit to be done on that but the ending didn't really enforce him kicking ass to get it over with either. Saying that, I'd be game for another film.
The guy who played Johns. He kind of reminded me of a no mustache Charles Bronson. I liked that character, nothing special about to stand out but I liked his characteristics. Not that it means much but it seems like Bautista is actually getting better as an actor. That was kind of neat.
The direction and and the dialogue were pretty good. A lot of blunt humor in there. I can't wait for it to come on BD. my only issue is probably that it's kind of a passive tale. It's not one that I would feel needed to be told. For some reason I don't admire it's script as much as much as I admire the film itself. It does too easily retread on some bits from PB. It does have some kind of pulp vibe that makes it neat.
Overall though I'd probabably give the film a solid B.
Oddly enough my favorite image out of the film were the nude necromonger women in his bed, reminded me of some painting or drawing that was popular.
Question: did that Riddick cartoon ever come out on a BD? I remember it on a solo DVD but also with the films as well. I'm Riddick crazy now. I just really enjoyed this recent one a lot.

I don't think Dark Fury ever came out on Blu-ray, the inclusion of it in the recent Blu-ray collection is still the DVD.

I really enjoyed this too... I agree will all the points Solid Snake said. If you enjoyed Pitch Black and CoR you should enjoy this one.
Can't wait for the BD and would be interested in another one.

Given how the characters behave, I'm not sure the writers of Riddick have ever met any people.
The film doesn't start for an hour. In that time we see a lot of Riddick stranded on a mostly-dead world, fighting off all manner of cartoons while he gets back on his feet. He makes it a point of saying he's gotten soft and he needs to become tough and brutal again. First step is he gets a puppy.
That half, with Diesel playing Cast Away with an animated dog, is the good half. In the second half of the film, the wafer-thin plot doesn't amount to much more than a Pitch Black remake with hardly any of the original's charm or character depth. Lots of talented actors here (well, and that one guy from The Canyons, so you can imagine how seriously I could take his performance), all wasted. The beautiful CGI landscapes do look beautiful, but they do also look CGI; actors standing "outside" look like they're standing in front of very fancy wallpaper.
Skip it, guys. It kinda stinks.

Quick question: wasn't this going to be released in 3D at one point? I could have sworn I saw previews saying it was.

Saw it last night. I haven't seen either Pitch Black (I think I might have seen parts of it but not all) or The Chronicles of Riddick but I thought this was pretty enjoyable. I'll probably watch the other two but this felt like it stood on it's own well enough.
