Re: Pacific Rim (del Toro, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

The Jaeger program was promised continued (reduced?) funding for a period of time leading up to completion of the Wall of Life.

(I may have missed this ...) One of the doctors mentions "They have done this before -- the dinosaurs." Did he mean the dinosaurs were actually Kaiju, or that the aliens wiped out the dinosaurs?

I saw this as a commentary on the illegal immigration problem in the United States ... rather than building a wall we need to build giant robots to hunt down illegal aliens.

I took it to mean the dinosaurs were kaiju that died out because the Earth environment wasn't right at the time.

Yeah, with a Mexican director at the helm. Not fucking likely.

That was my first thought ... but what would they have been wiping out?

They wouldn't necessarily be wiping something out, they were just trying to use the planet as their home. Once they were gone, human evolved in turn.

Kaijus Blue would be such an awesome name for a band. They could release an album called Misreadings of Neitzsche.

Or a drink!

It was said that the environment wasn't right at the time (of the dinosaurs) so they left and have now come back. The Kaiju were not the aliens ... The whole purpose of the Kaiju was to clear the way (so to speak). They were being genetically engineered as a weapon.

4 stars, but did this remind anyone else of the Italian Job? Felt like the structure/pace were the same.

Didn't even cross my mind. It reminded me more of a Power Rangers movie.

If they had gotten Jimmy Fallon as Pentecost the movie would have worked so much better.

My brother is currently attending a school known for partying up north, and says that apparently there's a Pacific Rim drinking game: every time one of the characters in the film mentions the word "Jaeger," you take a shot of Jaeger. So far, no one has made it past the first 15 minutes.
