I can see how it might be hard to shake the medieval association given castles and princesses, but like you said it's a fantasy setting so there's no reason to attach it to any time period and assume there would be rampant racism.

Funny to think about what a Quentin Tarantio-directed Cinderella film would be like.

That's the one in which Cinderella kills the stepmother and stepsisters, at the behest of her fairy godmotherfucker.

He'd really love filming the scenes where the prince goes around letting a bunch of woman try to fit their big feet in the glass slipper.

Yeah, but it was totally justified after the stepmother had the Prince killed.

I really enjoyed this.

I had no idea that was Hayley Atwell playing the mother when I was watching. I thought she looked familiar, but I had no clue it was her.

Damn. That was bugging me too. They sure toned her down.

Same here... When I saw her name in the credits I knew immediately, but it was bugging me throughout.

I would posit that with his incredible knowledge of films and his ability to essentially "steal" directorial elements of the best films, he would make an awesome traditional movie, even PG rated if he wanted.

Shouldn't that be WWDD or maybe WWDjD?

Anyways, I kind of liked it. Wasn't great, but I wasn't expecting much. Saw it in IMAX because I went with one of my son's friends and felt wasting an extra $12 for the upgrade was preferable to asking him to change theaters and sounding cheap. Completely unnecessary upgrade, though.

Loved the costumes. They were truly amazing. Thought the sets were beautiful as well. The special effects on the other hand weren't great. The mice never looked right and the lizards looked like they belonged in a paint commercial.

It was cool seeing Madden playing the handsome prince again. Way to stretch into new territories. Loved the veterans (Blanchett, Jacobi, Carter) in their respective roles.

Disney is screwed both ways. They have black people in the movie and people complain that they are treated as equals when they would be miserable during that time. Disney gets more historically accurate with casting and people complain it is just full of white people.

It sounds as if you assume that the way blacks were treated by American slave owners is indicative of how the race has been treated by all people since time began. That is a false assumption.

Also, the original Cinderella story was written before there were even any significant numbers of Europeans on the American continent. The story is a fantasy, not intended to be linked to the history of any nation on this planet.

Well, that's not completely correct. Disney can on occasions cast a racially diverse period piece that's also historically accurate.

Spoiler:

Just give the Oscar for Best Costumes to this movie now. I can't see anything else coming out this year that can compete.

Re: Disney's Cinderella (2015, D: Branagh) S: James, Madden, Blanchett, Carter

Saw this tonight; enjoyed it overall, but didn't think it was anything special or particularly elevated the material over the existing animated feature. Lily James is very attractive; I'm unfamiliar with Downton Abbey, so she's new to me. Madden plays royalty well. I liked the deeper back story given to Cinderella's parents and her growing up. Blanchett wasn't quite as menacing as I thought she might be, and I didn't really care for Carter as the fairy godmother. Her hamming it up felt a little out of place given the rest of the movie.

The Frozen short was cute, but the song wasn't memorable. I liked the little snowmen and the sandwich appearence though.
