Disney's Cinderella (2015, D: Branagh) S: James, Madden, Blanchett, Carter
Kenneth Branagh is directing the movie project, which sees Lily James in the title role, Cate Blanchett as the wicked stepmother and Game of Thrones' Richard Madden as the prince. Sophie McShera (Downton Abbey) and Holliday Granger (The Borgias) are playing the stepsisters.
Helena Bonham Carter has nabbed the plum role, or perhaps it’s the pumpkin role, of the fairy godmother in Disney’s live-action version of Cinderella.
The fairy godmother will be getting more screen time in this version than in Disney’s classic animated movie, with the character disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before revealing herself as the magical being she truly is.
Simon Kinberg, Allison Shearmur and David Barron are producing the fantasy and are planning a fall shoot in London.

Eh. Looks generic. Blanchett's involvement gets my attention but otherwise... I see nothing of real interesting for me.

So I guess live action fairy tales are the new trend in Hollywood. I guess vampires have run their course and movies featuring a dystopian future are running low.

Seems like they will stay closer to the original classic story and not change things much like they did with Maleficent. Looks more intense, though.

The original classic story is 3 pages long and has the sisters cutting their toes off to fit them in the shoes. Okay maybe not, I know it's a folk tale... though I would love a Grimm version of some of these movies.

I've been tepid on all the Disney live action releases, but they always seem to do extremely well. This one seems a little bit more interesting to me then the previous movies like Malefecent and Alice, but this one seems like a more typical story.

What will add fuel to this movie's fire is the fact that Disney will be attaching a new Frozen short to play in front of it. Princess overload for sure.
I would love it if

Who would have guessed the direction that Kenneth Branagh's career would take? He was like an Olivier who took time off from Shakespeare to make smart Hitchcock homages. What the hell happened?
Did anyone walk out of Hamlet in 1996 and say, "I bet in 20 years the guy who made this will make a live action Thor movie and follow it up with a Tom Clancy adaptation and a straightforward live action version of Disney's Cinderella. Talking mice and everything!!!"?

Branagh's fingerprints are blatantly evident even in the trailer with the bright colors and pageantry. Though if you're going to redo all of the plot devices from the animated movie, why bother with this? Why not do something at least somewhat different? I don't know if it was always there and I'm just noticing it now more as I get older, but I grow increasingly uncomfortable with the sexual undertones in Disney flicks. Or maybe I'm just imagining it because I've heard so many conspiracy theories about it.
And whah the hell are "mild thematic elements?!"
