This is the End (Goldberg/Rogen, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

As of this posting...
Metacritic: 71
Rotten Tomatoes: 81%
IMDB: 7.3

<hr>

Saw this last night in a packed house and the audience ate it up. It's one of the funnier movies I have seen in theaters recently and expect it to be near the top of my 2013 comedy list. It moves quickly, there are not a lot of dull moments, and once it moves to explaining why the world is ending, it still does so successfully within a comedic framework.

The only downside is unlike, say, Zombieland, more than 80% of the film takes place inside James Franco's house, which means the jokes and performances need to carry the film. They do.

Michael Phillips gave it 3 1/2 stars.

Supposedly it opens tomorrow wide and I wanted to see it this weekend but I haven't found any local theaters that are listing it yet.

Edit: Never mind. RT's movie listings search sucks. It is already showing tonight just down the street from my house.

I hope this movie does well despite having a weekend against Man of Steel. Guess that's why they're jump starting it tonight.

From all the reviews, this should be the big comedy of the summer. I think it will have legs too. Looks hilarious.

Re: This is the End (Goldberg/Rogen, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

just got back and i can honestly say without hyperbole i've never laughed so much in a movie theater. it's not a GREAT movie by any means but if you like these guys and their sense of humor then you'll find it hilarious. i'm curious if it'll stand up on repeat viewings but as it stands i'm giving it a 4/5 and it'll likely the be funniest movie i see all year.

The gimp reveal =

The sequel to
Spoiler:
Pineapple Express

I thought it was funny, but I think my expectations were too high going in. I'd give it a solid B/B+. I will say one thing. If you are a McBride fan you won't be disappointed.

I haven't laughed this hard at a movie in a long time. Outrageously funny stuff.

I think it was better because it mostly takes place in James Franco's house.

I would've liked more Emma Watson though.

This should do huge repeat business. It's damn close to an NC-17, too.

Re: This is the End (Goldberg/Rogen, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Saw the 1st showing earlier today, I thought it was hysterical! Several laugh out loud moments. Probably about 20 people in attendance. I think me an another couple near by laughed the most.
I thought some of the video confessionals were great, and the gimp reveal... don't know how they got that person to do it.
I was thinking during the movie, I can't believe they got the money to do this film, followed by, I'm glad they got the money to do this film.
8/10
Credits say Paul Rudd was in there, but I don't remember seeing him.

He's the one that ran up to the house with the huge champagne bottle when they were all outside at the beginning.

This is currently the second highest rated "summer" movie, just behind Star Trek Into Darkness

It's funny how Evan Goldberg has his hand in these movies, writing and now directing, yet he's still relegated to being a 'nobody' kinda, when maybe he could have been part of the gang in front of the camera. Not sure how his acting is, but that's interesting.

I loved the fuck out of this! A coked out Cera was great (the ONE time he hasn't played a variation of characters he usually plays)
Spoiler:
who would of thought in 2013 that the sight of the Backstreet Boys would get a huge reaction!

Hahaha. Yeah, Cera was great in his small role. He plays a killer coked out douche.

That bathroom scene was fucking funny, too.

Start to finish, this is one of the funniest, most insanely hilarious comedies I've seen in ages. Everybody in the cast killed it (even Cera, who I normally detest) and the story went in so many fucked up, twisted ways I was hooked in right from the start. I will absolutely go see it again.

This was hilarious. A real treat if you've been a fan of these guys since the F&G / Undeclared days...

That was Ann Veal tossing Cera's salad wasn't it?

Also... wasnt there talk of Rogen taking over the Ghosbusters franchise? If so, make that happen. The demons in this were awesome looking.

I may have to go see this again before the weekend is over. I can't imagine what it would be like in a packed theater.

Re: This is the End (Goldberg/Rogen, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Absolutely loved it. The funniest movie I've seen in a long time.

Has anyone else here seen The FP? I could have sworn I saw the lead actor, JTRO, in a scene towards the end
Spoiler:
(in Danny McBride's gang).
Sure enough, I just checked IMDB and that was him. Funniest thing is he was dressed exactly like his character in The FP.

The director of The FP (Brandon Trost) was the cinematographer on this film.

I couldn't make it through 5 minutes of The FP. Such a terrible piece of hipster shit.

Re: This is the End (Goldberg/Rogen, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Saw this earlier today and I really enjoyed it! I wish I could've avoided the trailer because many of the funnier moments were in it and I probably would've laughed myself to death if I had originally seen those scenes in the context of the film first.

I liked the set up and the continual surprises as the movie went on. I honestly had no idea where they were going with this film, but I'm glad it didn't completely crash and burn during the final act like many of these high concept comedies do (like "The Watch"). I really enjoyed the actors sending themselves up and I may never look at Micheal Cera in the same way again. It was great to go to a comedy and actually laugh! That seems to be a rarity lately.

Re: This is the End (Goldberg/Rogen, 2013) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it last night. LOVED IT!!! While I don't see it doing big numbers this weekend, I definitely see it having legs and being the "go to" comedy for the summer. The humor might be a bit too inside for people who don't follow movies, but it's still enjoyable.

Also, I can now officially say I have no problem with
Spoiler:
Channing Tatum
any longer. The guy's obviously cool.
