We all know the real choice was Jenna Fischer

If the producers knew what they were doing they'd have cast Kidada Jones as Jimmy Olsen.

You, know it says a lot when two movies are released on a weekend during summer and all anyone wants to discuss is the movie that comes out the following week.

Amy Adams is attractive, but I've never thought about her being "too cute" for anything she's been in. Margot Kidder was the queen of butterfaces, a definite genetic hybrid of Margaret Hamilton and Gary Busey, and a voice that could crack every chalkboard you've ever heard nails being drug across. And her portrayal of Lois Lane? Completely grating and self-serving, a woman you actually wind up being shocked that Superman would ever fall for. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing how Adams tackles it.

Well put. Kidder was always the one casting choice from the original films that made me scratch my head. I felt no chemistry between her and Reeve, and her portrayal was, as you say, grating. I can't wait to see Amy Adams' version.

Notice I didn't say Kidder was a great Lois Lane. I personally thought she was more or less playing a variation on herself (which interviews confirmed) . I'm just saying that Rashida Jones would have been closer to that version. Adams is a fine actress and from what I have seen will most likely be closer to the comic version.

I am curious as to how Shannon will be received as Zod. Stamp's version seemed more like an aristocrat whose vanity was his downfall. Shannon seems like he's playing Agent Van Alden with superpowers, which is a pretty scary concept.

I understood what you meant. I was just giving my opinion on Kidder's version, and in that expressing that anything would be better than what she brought to the screen.

He's definitely going to be a scenery-chewer.

Re: Man of Steel - The Reviews Thread

My one concern about this movie from what I've heard in terms of how it relates to the old ones is that it might be a bit too dark. While I will say the comedy aspect of the ones from the 80s seemed pushed to extremes at times (especially with III and Richard Pryor), it did help give them a fun feeling. Lightening the mood is not a strong point of either Snyder of Nolan.

While there are some humorous situations and lines in this one, I felt it was a bit more..down to earth? I really like Cavill's Kal El/Clark as a fellow who's a stranger among us. No goofy Luthor plots, no idiot side kicks. There is much more gravitas than with other incarnations. I found it refreshing.

Shannon was awesome, Zod's a man on a righteous mission who will do anything to see it through. He definitely feels he is working in Krypton's best interest and not his own.

Re: Man of Steel - The Reviews Thread

You must've missed a post or two by bluetoast answering specific questions about the movie and giving a short and sweet review. N2DVD has posted his spoiler-ish review as well. And lastly, as was said in the first post, review embargo lifts tomorrow night.

But you're free to come back here around 10PM pacific on Thursday because that's about the time the people on the East Coast who went to the Walmart early screenings will be coming out of the theaters. :-)

Re: Man of Steel - The Reviews Thread

They're obligated to give a really great movie, i mean they probably had guns pointed at their heads by shaky handed exces yelling "Don't fuck up like the last couple of Superman flicks!!!!". This is just the Casino Royale syndrome at work. The question will be: will the sequel suck.

Re: Man of Steel - The Reviews Thread

I like Kidder too.

Margot Kidder was the queen of butterfaces, a definite genetic hybrid of Margaret Hamilton and Gary Busey... a woman you actually wind up being shocked that Superman would ever fall for.
The way I read Superman/Clark's attraction to her was that she was so different from his background and temperment, that he found her fascinating. And being strong willed, having that inner core of toughness, made her seem viable to him as a partner/mate. She could probably handle a romance with an alien much better than the average hot house flower that may be a lot prettier but wilts unless conditions are constantly perfect.
His attraction to her made sense to me. But I also0 thought under the right lighting (by Unsworth) she could look attractive.
And as you can see in the casting tapes, she had a mega watt personality. I thought Anne Archer was one of the most beautiful women of her generation, but reading of Lois was a complete dud to me. Same for Raffin and all the other conventionally more attractive actresses that tired out for it.

But audiences today seem monomaniacal in their superficiality. I look at the actors that were popular and respected (as leads not just supporting characters or villains) in the 20's-70's- and there's no way these enlightened audiences today would accept them because they are simply not GQ or Maxim cover material.
