Padme Amidala or Shimi Skywalker(great names, BTW). Take your pick. Shit, you should rename this thread Lamest SW death. There's plenty of them.

Boba fett has to be the most overrated character ever.... was it that he was a big character in the comics or books?

Has to be the biggest blunder Lucas made in the whole series. A mother of newborn twins has no will to live? I mean I get that he can't redeem Vader if he kills her in cold blood but at least have Palpatine kill her.

No, there were no comics or books featuring Boba Fett before the movies. People just basically latched onto him because he looks cool and has a jetpack.

I never got all the praise for the character, either. He only shows up briefly in "Empire", and gets killed off quickly in "Jedi". Lucas later put him into the SE of "A New Hope", but again, it was minor. None of the OT ever explained why he hated Solo, or anything about his history. Its similar to how Vader even found out about Luke being his son to start with.

I found that bit hilarious and appropriate for that asshat. Though in real life he took several days to die from infection due to his burns.

Ernst Stavro Blofeld in For Your Eyes Only. Granted, they never mention him by name but it's clear who he is. He was Bond's main nemesis, and the lead villain in 3 prior films, yet all he gets a throwaway opening credit death, which was played for laughs.
I understand the behind-the-scenes reasons behind it, but it's still a b.s. way to kill off the character.

Maybe he became a cult favorite since his action figure wasn't initially available in stores. You had to send in proofs of purchase from other figures to get a Boba Fett.

There are several factors that led to Boba Fett being so popular. But these factors only work when grouped together. First, Boba Fett has some unexplained history with Han Solo. But so did Greedo and no one cares about him except to bitch that Lucas changed it so that Greedo shot first. Second, he has a pretty cool looking costume (though it's mainly the helmet that sells the look). And third, Vader addressed him directly to ensure that Boba Fett behaved. This is the big one. Why would Vader even need to tell Fett anything when a simple force choke would do? And then Boba Fett's response of "as you wish" was only missing a shrug. Seriously, it's like Boba Fett said "whatever" and shrugged his shoulders at Vader. Who does that? No one but Boba Fett.
Put that all together and you got yourself an intruiging character with little to no development.

Boba Fett was obviously always meant to be a major character, since all of the stormtroopers are fellow clones of his father. Lucas had all of this planned from the beginning. Its not like he simply shoehorned random things into the prequels!

For me, Boba Fett jumped the shark in the re-release of Episode IV, where Lucas wasn't content with just adding him into a scene, he actually had the camera linger on the character while he broke the fourth wall and mugged for the camera.

Well in hindsight when you can watch the movies whenever you want it is easy to say that. However, at the time you had to wait three years between Star Wars and Empire and in between that time there was a Holiday special that featured him in a cartoon and a new figure of him around 1978. He was one of the few new Star Wars characters that kids knew about and could buy between movies at a time when kids and others were looking for anything new regarding Star Wars.
