Tayor-Johnson was flat in Kick-ass too, so no huge surprise. I'd be surprised if Olsen wasn't decent.

If you search twitter reactions have been stellar.
Michael Phillips from Chicago Tribune says "Next week the new "Godzilla" opens, and while we must wait to discuss it (other than to say it's really good)"

The consensus I'm gathering is the human drama is a bit flat - Cranston and Watanabe are excellent, but neither has a ton of screen time. Major focus is on Johnson and Olsen, both of whom are getting mixed reviews on their acting.
But Godzilla? Not surprisingly, he fucking kills it. Everything I've read has said he's a massive powerhouse and when he does his thing, it's beyond amazing.

But let's be real. This is the intro/setup. The sequel will be wall to wall monsters. That's how it always goes.

Just got back from the sneak preview at our local military base. Will write something more extensive later, but here are my initial impressions:
The first 3/4 of the movie is basically a slow build disaster movie. The good monster stuff isn't until the last half hour of the movie.
The majority of the human aspect of the movie focuses on Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character. The military aspect of the story is woven in and around his presence, for the most part.
Other than a couple of situational humor moments, the movie is straight forward serious.
Yes, I caught not one, but two Mothra "shout-outs". You have to know what you're looking for, though. And no, it's not the Las Vegas scene a lot of people talk about.
The music was serviceable, but not spectacular.
The full deal with the MUTOs is not really given away in the trailers, which I appreciated.
Most of the bits with Godzilla being fired upon was more panic related than actual attacks on him.
Once we get into the actual fight between Godzilla and the MUTOs, it was awesome. Only complaint is that it takes place at night, and is too short. At least in Pacific Rim, most of the night fights took place in well lit cities.
I really liked the way they did the opening credits. Can't wait to freeze frame this movie when it comes to blu ray.
When Godzilla did a very "Godzilla" thing during the final fight, the theater erupted into cheers and applause.
Overall, I thought it was a great movie, a solid 8/10. Debating whether to see it in fake IMAX this Thursday night.

I did read some reviews that say the humans suck but Godzilla is awesome but then that he's only in it for a little bit and it takes forever before he's actually onscreen.

Well, it does take a bit before his presence is first revealed, maybe a third of the way in. The story takes its time establishing the WHY of his reappearance.

Dubbing for foreign films, especially ones that go straight to video in the US, is usually handed off to the cheapest and shittiest studio available. When they actually put some effort into it, dubbing can actually be pretty terrific, even superior to the original product. Godzilla 2000 is a prime example, maybe the best dubbing job I've ever heard.

I remember trying to watch some of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in English and it felt like the movie quality dropped a grade. Same with Brotherhood of the Wolf.

I watched some of the older Big G movies from the 50s and 60s without the dubbing and was amazed at how much of a difference it made. While it was still dumb fun, it didn't feel as cheesy. I really would like to get some of the recently issued Blu-Rays from the Heisei era but have heard even though the dubbing is optional, the subtitles are not true translations of what is being said or are just the dub job in writing.

Any good Godzilla sites for info on all the lore, monsters, etc? Figured nows as good a time as any for a refresher. I remember my dad and uncle watching a monster movie on tv in the mid 80's, I've always wondered if it was one of the Godzilla movies. The last shot is of the severed foot walking around on the bottom of the ocean. Any of the monsters regenerate limbs like that?
