Re: Godzilla (2014, Edwards) S: Taylor-Johnson, Cranston, Olsen
I overheard some geeks in a comic book store recently talking about how every time a building is destroyed in one of these films, there are people who die, people who have stories, etc. I have a response if someone was ever to comment like that directly to me and it would be: "No, there ARE no people in those buildings being destroyed. They're special effects--miniatures (or CGI) with no characters in them. If the filmmakers were to put identifiable characters IN those buildings and GIVE them backstories, then--and only then--would your statement be true. Those buildings are merely symbolic representations of buildings that would hypothetically be knocked down if a giant dinosaur were to rampage among them."

Boxoffice.com mentions the tracking currently has the film opening towards $75 million, and that's with 3 more weeks of marketing to go. I think the number will go up a little bit more. An $85 million opening would be a strong start. And this should bring in huge overseas numbers.

I think it'll have a very successful opening weekend, along the lines of $55 - $65m. $85 seems kind of ridiculous.

That article says it's tracking near Man of Steel numbers, so $85mm isn't ridiculous. In fact, even though many people will go see Spidey 2 I think just as many, if not more, don't care about it. It's being sold as another overstuffed sequel to a series that is on film five. Godzilla, as an "original" property, could satisfy consumer demand for something that isn't so ubiquitous.
Plus, looking fucking amazing hasn't been hurting its odds either.
Personally, I think it'll have a $77mm OW, finishing out around $203mm domestic. If the reviews are solid, that could get higher.

My gut tells me that this movie will struggle domestically. I don't think Godzilla appeals to the female segment as much as superhero movies do. Hope I'm wrong.

Here's the link to the Box Office site that mentions the 75 million opening.

If early reviews for Godzilla are as good as the preview footage, this will be the sleeper blockbuster of the summer a la Star Trek from six years ago.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is tracking to hit $92-95M on opening weekend which I believe is extremely high. I get that the film will also be in 3D and IMAX, but it's coming off a film that had a very tepid audience response. With the reviews coming in stating it's more of the same, it'll be number one for two weeks and then plummet... which is saying something as this summer has a weak batch of films slated.

Star Trek was five years ago already? Jeesh.
I'm guessing about $105m for Spider-man 2 and about $45m - $55m for Godzilla.

I know. Say what you will about something like Star Wars being a phenomenon for a kid. But it has nothing like power of that scene. Spielberg made dinosaurs real. Like that made my mind explode as a kid. I was like 6. Totally was into dinosaurs. I remember crying out of joy cuz I was seeing a real dinosaur.
And especially the way that scene is crafted together is so well. It's not a beat of action or surprise but one of bubbling awe.

Back to Godzilla, I see it doing slightly better than Pacific Rim, mainly because it has name recognition in Big G. I too feel it will do better over seas. The only thing that can help it moreso is if it gets good reviews, and I don't mean upper 60% on rottentomatoes, it has to be in the upper 80s or low 90s. Even then, there's the chance many people will think it too dark for a Godzilla movie (though Big G isn't supposed to be a joke) . Then again TASM 2 will have the whole stigma of

If it had an excellent audience response, why did it underperform?
It's the lowest-grossing Spider-man film both domestically and internationally despite being available in 3D and IMAX.
Within my group of friends, it's a love it or hate it film. I personally think it's a piece of shit.

It underperformed because of Spider-Man 3. If people really did love ASM, then it's no surprise that the sequel will track big. But if it does, then fuck America.

I read that Godzilla is already tracking over $60m opening weekend. If glowing reviews start coming out I wouldn't be surprised to see it surge to $75m. The marketing has been great, they're not trying to sell it on mystery, instead they're showing us the spectacle.

Our local military theater is showing Godzilla in digital 3D on May 10. I plan to see it then, and will likely see it the following week in IMAX. I have been a Godzilla fan since the mid-60s. I remember watching Godzilla movies on Saturdays on WWL (New Orleans station), and in 1976, sat through a 4-movie Godzilla marathon at a drive-in theater. So I am really looking forward to this one!
