Gareth Edwards directed the excellent Monsters. Monsters only cost 800,000 to make and propelled his career into Godzilla territory.

Yeah - in terms of experience/budget is this the biggest jump ever for a director? Seems like he really came out of nowhere... I still haven't seen Monsters.

From $800,000 to $160,000,000. Hell of a leap.... 200 times of a leap from Monsters.
I think so. He did some very minor stuff. Mostly as a digital effects guy.
He's done very well for himself. I do hope that Godzilla is a really fucking awesome flick cuz I love the tone from what we've seen. That clip I posted ain't joking in how it's presenting the horror of such events.
Edit: wait... Mariachi was 7k. Desperado was $7 million. That's 1000 times the budget of Mariachi.
Granted. Rodriguez and Edwards played on different fields. I'd still argue, just for sheer size difference, that Edwards had the bigger leap.

I'd love to know what Japan's reaction has been. Someone from Toho stormed out of the Godzilla 98 premier, saying the movie had nothing to do with what Godzilla was all about. I wonder if Japan is as stoked as we are.

Here's the footage, filmed by an idiot who doesn't know to turn his iPhone into landscape mode. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7otIriNTmw

Can't see the videos, oh well. I think his body shape / size in this one is like a throwback to the whole "Man in Suit" look of the originals. Very different from the more sleek, raptor-like design of the 90s version.

After looking at the past trailers and then this footage... I do wonder if his design was partly based on the structure of a bear. His girth and even some movement really look like that of a bear.
It's been mentioned here recently too. And I kind of think he does have a bear characteristic.

Interesting theory. It would explain why Werner Herzog is the only person who's been allowed to hear the full audio of the film.

Edwards took a question regarding the other Toho kaiju and while he kept it rather unclear, he did say that he wanted a MUTO with wings, and that we may see some resemblance/relation to other famous Kaiju. He was very vague in his words. And looking at the full MUTO on the tarmac.. to me it looks like part Gi-mantis/Kamacuras. If that's the case, I can see where it's possible to connect those kinds of Kaiju to MUTO within this series.

That does it. My nephew showed me the new Godzilla poster he got for Easter and, to me it looks like shit. If this 2014 G doesn't look like a traditional G, then this motha fucker better act like a G.

Well... What's your traditional G? 1954? Early sequel Showa? Friendly mister for humanity and kicks ass with a robot buddy? G from 1984 (or 1985 here)? Heisei? One of the several designs from the Millenium series? What's your traditional G? He's had see real looks.
I honestly prefer the Heisei look. But I like his current look too. A little to bear flabby for me but he does look very animalistic.

Except for the 70's era G, all the G designs seemed to have build upon their previous incarnations. This seems like a step back. I mean, WTF, dog eyes? A kodiak? Thats not a Godzilla look. The 2014 G has a belly that rivals Showa Gigan.

1954 Godzilla had a belly. They've all had bellys from what I can remember. Heisei G had a gut but he was fit looking.
I like the new design. Is it my favorite? No. But he does have more of a naturally animalistic body. I'm cool with that. Less stylized, in a way, but also looking natural.

The new Godzilla model looks pretty good, but I'm going in with tempered expectations.
Big monster movies haven't done much for me in the past.

Animals don't all have basic set up structure like a man. Reptiles have cankles. It looks weird to us cuz G hasn't had something like that but it's not odd for animals.
