The story is just not right for today's market. It just didn't seem the right time for this kind of film.

It suffers from an identity crisis. It's a children's tale that is trying to lure in the teen to 30 market which is tough.

Perhaps not kiddie enough to be taken as a 'children's movie', not dark/adult enough for more mature viewers.

Plus the title to the movie is a spoiler so why bother? I mean we already know Jack slays the giants why spend $8 to see it then?

This is a good analysis. The movie is very much a kid's movie in terms of plot, simplistic one-note characters, and the theme. At the same time, you could add just a few minutes of footage (the film quickly cuts away from several gruesome deaths) and this would suddenly be a hard R. It's surreal.

I actually quite enjoyed it, but I though the 3D was hit or miss, most of it works, although there are some instances where I thought the Director and the DP could have done more (notably the 'bee sequence')

also I thought it was really dumb to shoot this in scope (2.35), it should have been in 1.85 since the majority of new theater screens are 1.85/horizontal masking - the giant's should have looked tall and wide screen imagery doesn't convey this to it's best effect - it would have been cool, if Singer had shot the beginning of the movie in 2.35 and then the film shifts to 1.78 for the beanstalk raising the house towards the sky during the storm and the rest of the film 'fullscreen'

I can't believe the guy who did The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil, and X2 directed this. I really use to like Bryan Singer too.

That's a really good way to put it. As it is, this is really a children's flick through and through. But yeah, there are a few crazy kills that do cut away right before it happens, so it leaves a lot of awfulness to the imagination. Heck, there are a few scenes where giants bit the heads off of people and it pretty much shows it.

Now that said, I enjoyed it for what it was. Me and my grown nephew saw it last night and it was WAY better than I anticipated. I never would have gone to see it had he just wanted to go out to waste some time. Heck, the only real reason we saw this one was because it started the earliest after I got off work.

If you would remove a bit of the childish antics, like farts and the overly stupid antics of the second head of the main giant, and just the weird acting style of some of the characters that were flat out pandering to kids, and insert the violence that seemed to want to be there so badly and expand on some of the characters a bit more and just overall make it a little more "adult" and you would have a pretty cool dark twist to this tale.

There were two scenes that really stood out to me...



Part of the problem is not knowing what to expect when you watch it. It wants to be both a very kiddy children's movie but also a violent adult film at the same time, and there is very little middle ground. Something like the Toy Story flicks walks that line much better, but then again you can't really compare the two since Toy Story and things like that are in an entirely different class of film. You know what I mean though.

I'd give it a rating of something along the lines of a 6 or 6.5 out of 10 or so.

I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than Superman Returns, but that may say more about my hatred of that flick than my enjoyment of Jack the Giant Slayer. I'm not sure on that one. I'll put it another way - if there was a sequel (which isn't likely at all, at least not now) then I would go watch it.

I wonder how many people have stayed away from Buffy the Vampire Slayer for that very same reason.

As opposed to just not being into gothic/supernatural teen soap operas.

Saw it in 3D and I honestly don't get the hate for this one, found it entertaining. Was gonna watch it in IMAX 3D but by the time I realized all theaters in the area only play ONE IMAX 3D at a time, the latest one, Oz was in and Jack out.

This was not terrible but didn't see the 200 mil budget

Really didn't care for this at all. The characters are thinly written, the action was so-so (albeit I did enjoy the one giant kill at the end) but the visual effects were at least decent, although I'm not sure how the budget was nearly $200m with no big pay stars. However, I just have a hard time getting into movies where the villains are CGI-generated.

Called this in tonight on Pay Per View HD and enjoyed it much more than I expected. I'm actually a huge fan of Singer's body of work ("Superman Returns" and Valkyrie" included), but thought the trailers for this looked mediocre at best. Mainly because of the CGI. But it wasn't overkill the way the trailers indicated. And honestly, the CGI was not bad at all (IMO). For those on the fence, it's a really fun rental at the very least. But it's definitely not for younger kids. It's just way too violent for anyone under 8-10 years old.

I caught this thanks to the free HBO/Cinemax weekend. I really kind of enjoyed it. I thought Ewan McGregor looked like he was having a blast, and the story was surprisingly quite vicious at times.

I saw it recently too and enjoyed it very much. As another poster pointed out, the last 45 minutes or so were really fun and even thrilling at times. While not wonderful, I certainly liked it more than say MAN OF STEEL or even INTO DARKNESS.

Better than I thought it would be.
