PUBLIC ENEMIES (Michael Mann), 2009 - Depp, Bale
This is turning into one of my most anticipated films....
Bale Joining Depp in Mann's Public Enemies
Source: Variety January 11, 2008
Variety says that Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in Michael Mann's upcoming Public Enemies.
According to the trade, Bale will play Melvin Purvis, the legendary FBI agent who led the manhunt for John Dillinger. Depp is starring as Dillinger in the film, which is set up at Universal and is slated to begin production in March.
Mann is producing via his Forward Pass, with Kevin Misher and his Misher Films. Jane Rosenthal of Tribeca is executive producing.

I'm going to the local multiplex tonight to wait in line for tickets to this movie.
Who's with me?
......
Seriously, though. I am really looking forward to this one. Plus, I hear they're going to be making it in my home state of Wisconsin. I may have to drive up north just to scope this out once filming commences.

Michael Mann directing Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, with Christian Bale for good measure. If Javier Bardem or Edward Norton or Robert Downey Jr. was on board I'd want to see this even more than I already do. PLEASE get this out for December.
Jeremy Smith from CHUD.com gave the script a review nothing short of glowing. He says if it's done right (and knowing Mann it will be, Miami Vice be damned) this could be Heat: The Prohibition Era. Also good to see John Ortiz getting a push after his memorable supporting turn in American Gangster.
And Marion Cotillard:
God that woman is hot as hell...when not playing Edith Piaf.

I'm looking forward to this. I've been a fan a Mann's for some time, and Depp and Bale have been a winning streaks for the last couple of years.

I live in Horicon, but didn't get a chance to head over to Columbus to check out the shoot.

A friend got some pictures yesterday. They were shooting at a courthouse in a town of about 2,500 (which is the county seat of a county of about 15,000...yeah, not real big).

This is actually my aunt, who has some property that Depp's dressing room trailer or whatever was parked on:

This was Depp walking to his trailer in the morning, I think:

They're done shooting in Columbus.
I know the news this morning said they were in Indiana, not sure about Oshkosh.

Stephen Lang has also joined the cast as a Texas Ranger on Dillinger's trail.
Die-hards who possess Mann-crushes will remember that he played the barbecued tabloid reporter in Manhunter, and I was getting worried there would be no regulars from previous movies, but alas there will be. Also seems like he's getting a resurgence showing up in this and then Avatar.
