Re: Do you eat at theater?

Usually I go shortly after having a big breakfast, so I tend not to eat. The wife will typically stash a couple of sodas in her bag.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

I usually watch 3-4 movies in one day when i go. Depending on how much time i have i will either hit Planet Sub outside or hit the theater restaurant.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

The ticket is expensive enough, so I don't buy their food. I don't get a drink either because I don't want to miss any part of the movie to take a piss or be uncomfortable holding it. The whole idea of food at the movies is almost enough to make me stop going to the movies altogether... It drives me nuts when people near me eat and I miss part of the dialog in a quiet scene because of crinkling food wrappers and popcorn bags or candy pieces rolling inside boxes as they're poured out. The worst is when someone gets a hotdog and I have to smell mustard, relish and onions the whole time the movie's playing.

Almost never and then only a drink. A nice bottle of wine is the best.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

That's a shitty poll.

Where is the sometimes option?

I rarely eat at the theater. I think the last time I ate at a theater was the 2nd time I saw Dredd. And before that...don't fucking know, man.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

Really flawed poll choices. I sometimes eat at the movies. We only have a regular Cinemark theater in town, but you can get pizza, burgers and all kinds of other stuff there. It's pretty good, too. I imagine there are quite a few theaters now that do that, ones that aren't an Alamo Drafthouse or Studio Movie Grill. The poll choices make it seem like a regular theater wouldn't have that option.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

Usually I only get the popcorn/drink combo but there was this one time a family that sat behind me, it was a showing of Se7en, brought in a bucket of KFC. I was pissed that I would have to smell that during the show and why did they have to sit behind me but then I was tapped on the shoulder by one of them. Said they were sorry for being rude and asked if I would like a plate. They actually brought in paper plates too! I said I sure would and it turned out to be one of the best theater experiences ever.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

Depends on what you mean by eat. I will occasionally get popcorn and/or a drink and sometimes sneak in some candy. But I wouldn't actually eat a meal at the movies. Some of the food there is disgusting looking. My buddy often meets me after work for a flick and he'll crush 2 overpriced hot dogs. Barf.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

Sometimes.

I never do at the chain theaters.

At the local theater, they have popcorn with real sticks of butter and bottles of premium soda. I'll always buy some. The owner is a nice guy, he shows good movies, and I want to help his profit margin.

The Cinefamily and Nuart theaters do that here. Fresh food, snacks, premium sodas, etc... Love that shit.

What are considered premium sodas? Just glass bottled sodas?

Re: Do you eat at theater?

An AMC gigaplex opened around here and had pretty good food at very nice prices--like chili cheese dog with curly fries for $6. But they raised prices then got rid of the hot-food counter altogether after less than a year. Guess it was too good to last.

I generally only get popcorn unless it's a meal replacement.

Jones Soda

Teddys

Hell, some spots even carry Mexican coke and pepsi made with cane sugar.

Premeium sodas also carry a premium price. They're specialty and not from the soda machine or dispenser.

Cool, thought it might just be something likes Jones. Although i'm not a big fan and wouldn't pay extra for it.

They must have felt real awkward when they got to the gluttony sequence.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

It depends and usually is a wave type thing. I went a long time not eating or drinking anything at all when I went to the movies, but then my girlfriend and I settled into a shared popcorn and diet coke routine. Generally, if I go by myself or with friends, I'm not stopping at the concession stand for food (at most a diet coke). If I go with my gf and we haven't eaten beforehand or intend to grab food right after, we'll get the aforementioned pair or if not, we'll bring in previously bought movie candy.

There is one theater in my neighborhood in Brooklyn that does Alamo-style drink and food service. I've gone twice...once I order a cocktail before the show and a dessert during and the 2nd time I just ordered a cocktail during the show. I don't really enjoy eating an actual meal in the dark.

PS: There is a circle of hell reserved for "those people" that frequent art house theaters with concealed odorous combo platters to be eaten during the movie, but not before being unveiled mid-movie from a noisy as hell crinkling bag.

Re: Do you eat at theater?

No, never.

My parents taught me that it's a movie theater, not a restaurant.

Put another way, let's say you're at work from 8-5. Most people would easily have two 4-hour stretches without eating (8-12 and 1-5) and think nothing of it, but then they act like they'll die of malnutrition in a theater if they go 2 hours without food. Doesn't make sense.

But...haven't they had food at movie theaters even before your parents were born? Popcorn and whatever else is the norm?

Back when he was in film school, he managed a film series of underground and experimental films. A few years later, he became a partner in an independent theater by the university. He runs the place, serves the popcorn, and presumably chooses the movies.

We were most recently there for a H.P. Lovecraft double feature.

To your last point. I'm sure there are a lot of people who if they see a movie during the afternoon, what they eat there is essentially their lunch. I mean, unless you think people should only eat 3x per day during their designated meal time, I'm not seeing what "doesn't make sense" about eating at a movie theater.

Ritualistic eating habits are a thing. People eat during sporting events, snack at the movies, etc. For some it is part of the "experience" of going out to the movies. It is really no different from random food-event connections such as tailgating before a football game (something I still don't get having not attended a big sports college).

Big difference between wanting popcorn at the movies and viewing a movie theater akin to a restaurant.
