Re: Django Unchained (Tarantino, 2012) — The Reviews Thread

I would say Spielberg was hitting the spectrum a lot more decades ago with films like ET, but I don't think his films are finding the same audience. I don't know anybody outside of film buffs that saw Tintin or War Horse. But I know plenty of casual film fans who will see Tarantino's latest film no matter what.

Yeah Spielberg's films tend to be more family-friendly, but Tarantino is infamous with his violence and style, and that can get you just as much hype and attention as keeping it PG. The ear scene in Reservoir Dogs practically made his career because everybody was talking about it. People who don't watch indie films sought out the movie.

I don't think there's anyway to quantify which well-known director is more well-known than the other; but considering how little casual movie goers know about directors, it's fair to say that Tarantino is very well known, and deserves to be in the same culture as Spielberg when it comes to pop-culture awareness.

That's why I said the ones that have made Spielberg....Spielberg.

Granted he hasn't done something like that in a while.

Yeah, I get it. I'm just saying that because more families watch Spielberg films, doesn't mean his parents don't know exactly who Tarantino is because of the notorious nature of his films.

Hoping to see it tonight. Then tomorrow the wife and I will attend a discussion about the film at an African American Cultural Center. This oughta be interesting...

I totally forgot about Will Smith turning down Django. Thank God. Foxx was perfect and Will Smith would've been .. Will Smith.

Thoroughly enjoyed this film, possibly more so than any other QT film. His command of dialogue is always strong but I found the wordplay in Django to be downright hilarious.

Will Smith would have made this movie hammy piece of shit. I'm glad he made the right decision and stayed away from it.

Ditto.

I've been checking out a lot of reviews on 'tube and while a majority of them seem to focus on breaking down the film (In critic mode), it's been very interesting to check out the clips that manage to go far beyond a "movie review".

From what I've read QT talked him out of it.

Not what I heard. I heard he just didn't want to do it based on the script, even while his agents were pushing him towards doing it.

I heard he wanted a part for his son in the film so QT & The Weinsteins told him to go fuck himself. ;)

I think Will Smith "could have" done a good job in this role, as long as QT was able to keep him in check.

Big Willie can be a good actor, but most of his roles are just suited for him to be that guy.

Yeah. I don't think Smith would've taken over this picture. Tarantino is Tarantino. It's his baby, nobody else's. I don't think Smith could've done shit w/ it w/o a say from Tarantino. Different? Sure. I don't think it would've been horrible if Tarantino went w/ him. But he knows what he wants and he gets it. The unfortunate thing about Smith is that he himself is self marketing man w/ a thing that people buy well for what he normally does. He's big but he's not varied enough like a Cruise.

That doesn't make sense. QT is the director, just don't cast him.

QT said in an interview that while he was meeting with Smith, he started to feel he wasn't right for the role so he "kinda talked him out of it".

Re: Django Unchained (Tarantino, 2012) — The Reviews Thread

I'm interested in what he has to say but at the same time he veers quite far from reviewing the movie in the context of the time period and how it represented that time period. I'm not interested in hearing about the number of armed "white" militias there are today. And I don't "feel the guilt" as none of us were either slaves or slave owners. Why should I feel guilty for stuff that my ancestors were likely not even involved with? Way to try and hype up a race war. I haven't got the feeling from anyone that I have talked with that has actually seen this movie that they feel the need to prepare for an oncoming race war because they saw, in a fictional movie, what a former slave did to a group of bigoted slave owners in the mid 1800's.

Saw the film and thought it good, not great. Thought Foxx was a poor lead. Thought the moving from the southwest to the deep south was jarring and really, nonsensical. The ending was rather weak as well. There were very good parts to be sure.....

I did not think Foxx was a poor lead, I think his part was underwritten & so was Kerry Washington's

I should also say this was the first QT film I've seen where it felt like we were missing footage. The editing was good, no complaints there, but the film certainly had an abridged feel at times. I'd really like to see QT's first cut.

I saw it and liked it a lot. I wondered if Jews watching "Inglorious Basterds" got the same sense of satisfaction watching them kill Nazis as I did watching Django kill those Whites. Interesting...

Anyway, I thought Sam Jackson's character was THE MOST evil character in the film. I mean Candy was just enjoying his White Privilege. So whatever...nothing new there. But "Stephen" was beyond that. He was actively participating in the shit treatment of his own people while enjoying the power given to him by a White man to do so... FUCK YOU STEPHEN. He was not stupid. No, he was very sharp...but he was still EVIL.

I wasn't bothered by the N-word, the was slavery was portrayed, or the violence. It fit the film...

I did. The way the film ended was a real cathartic release.

Not underwritten...under filmed. The script had a lot more for them.
