Why start threads if you don't have time to actually write them?

Re: Armageddon or Deep Impact?
I would have voted for Armageddon if it weren't for the Aerosmith tearjerker bullshit climax. My hatred of it increased exponentially when I read internet comments from people claiming it made them cry. Jesus
Deep Impact is banal in contrast but there's nothing in it as offensively bad as that last section of Armageddon.

Surprised at the results - I've always thought Deep Impact gets an unfair bad wrap.
Personally I like both, but with a little bit of a preference to Armageddon. I actually really like some of the performances.

Re: Armageddon or Deep Impact?
The Peacemaker was on cable yesterday. And I was wondering what Mimi Leder is up to. I guess she's remaking All Quiet on the Western Front. I thought she did excellent with The Peacemaker and Deep Impact - back to back productions. And then I remember Pay it Forward, which I disliked.
Like The Peacemaker, I liked that Leder focused on a character stories. Though not thoroughly explored, I liked that both movies attempted dimensional characters. And both movies shared a somber tone, against exciting action sequences.
Armageddon was the best thing ever, when I was fifteen. It's completely stupid. The tearjerker scenes are offensively manipulative (like a Barbara Walters interview). But I still have a warm spot for it.

I own both, like both, can't choose between them. Both being scifi, for action: Armageddon, for meaningful drama: Deep Impact. Both movies are very good despite the different directions they took. -kd5-

Fuckin' Armegeddon, baby! Mutherfuckers ain't given up! Harry Stamper doesn't know the meaning! All them pussies waiting to die in Deep Impact. Get the fuck outta here.
"I address you tonight not as the President of the United States, not as the leader of a country, but as a citizen of humanity. We are faced with the very gravest of challenges. The Bible calls this day "Armageddon" - the end of all things. And yet, for the first time in the history of the planet, a species has the technology to prevent its own extinction. All of you praying with us need to know that everything that can be done to prevent this disaster is being called into service. The human thirst for excellence, knowledge; every step up the ladder of science; every adventurous reach into space; all of our combined modern technologies and imaginations; even the wars that we've fought have provided us the tools to wage this terrible battle. Through all of the chaos that is our history; through all of the wrongs and the discord; through all of the pain and suffering; through all of our times, there is one thing that has nourished our souls, and elevated our species above its origins, and that is our courage. The dreams of an entire planet are focused tonight on those fourteen brave souls traveling into the heavens. And may we all, citizens the world over, see these events through. God speed, and good luck to you."
Fuck Morgan Freeman. That's my Prez right there.

Re: Armageddon or Deep Impact?
I vote for Deep Impact if just for the scene in the traffic jam when Leo comes back for his girl, and her parents give them their baby because they know they're not going to escape. That scene chokes me up as does the later scene when the ocean is coming and the parents spend their last moments looking into each other's eyes.
With Armageddon, I loved it on my first viewing. Seeing it again, I hated it. I've seesawed so many times with it, so it depends on my mood.

I think it's fucking dreadful. Embarrassingly bad.
A corporate shlock rock power ballad of the worst order. In other words...perfect for a Michael Bay movie.

Aerosmith hasn't mattered since the mid 70's.
Different strokes I guess.

I have a lot less problems with Deep Impact, so I leaned in that direction. But the cast of Armageddon is great to watch.

Armageddon. It's not a guilty pleasure for me. Sure, I can identify that it is cheese but I fucking love it. I never cried but I have to say I still get a little misty eyed when Will Patton's little boy runs up to him at the end. I wish I had no sense of fun and didn't pick the cheesier movie but fuck it. I'm glad I can watch Armageddon and something like Melancholia and enjoy them both.

Armageddon. Big, dumb & fun. Plus the cast is a fucking blast.
But yeah, the Aerosmith song is fucking terrible.
That would be a solid argument if 50% of the Bad Boys flicks weren't dog shit either. Bad Boys II is far more idiotic than Armageddon. I hate Transformers with a passion and I'd say those are masterworks compared to BBII.

Deep Impact all the way. 100%.
No contest.
I have always despised Armageddon. Dog shit of a movie but as I've said before I've never liked and therefore don't bother watching any Michael Bay movies unless they star Will Smith and Martin Lawrence and have the words "Bad Boys" in their titles.

Re: Armageddon or Deep Impact?
Deep Impact is better simply for having a big rock actually hit the Earth and showing the devastation caused by it.
Armageddon was worse because the big rock completely missed the Earth. I felt totally ripped off.
