Skyfall Warner Bros 4K Daniel Craig. Directed by Sam Mendes. 2012 James Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. I bought the "Daniel Craig" 4K set back in 2020, but I'm only now getting around to re-visiting "Skyfall". In my opinion, "Casino Royale" remains the best of the Craig Bonds. "A Quantum of Solace" (a terrible title) starts well, but the filmmakers now admit they were making up the script as they were going along (due to a Writer's strike) and it shows. "Serious Filmmaker" Sam Mendes took over the reins with "Skyfall", and he really knocked it out of the park. I'm a little ambivalent about the Modern Comic Bookishness of the film. And by "Comic Book" I'm not talking about the action, but rather the need to give us an origin for every Bond trope and that every aspect of the story has to have an emotional story-based connection to Bond. Eventually we're told that everything that happens in the five Craig films are all connected, which just a little to MCU for me. That being said, I enjoyed "Skyfall" a lot this time, and most of the callbacks worked on me just the way Mendes intended them to. |

The Greatest Showman (4K)…amazing Atmos track. With my new back speakers and subwoofer, the music is just soaring right through me. Great movie too. I’m so glad it became a huge financial success despite a lackluster first weekend in US. Must have done gang busters over seas. I just love this one. Even downloaded the soundtrack. So good!!! And why it got such middling reviews is beyond me.

Spectre 20th Century Home Entertainment Blu-Ray Daniel Craig. Directed by Sam Mendes. 2015 A cryptic message from Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE. "Spectre" has grown on me. Frankly. watching it the first time in the theater, I was a little disappointed. Certainly, the film has a bravura opening sequence, but by the middle of the film it started to feel long, -probably because it is just too damned long. Mendes just lets too many sequences go on and on (though he frames them magnificently). At home the length has proved less of a problem, and the story is pretty solid, even with that "Blofeld" reveal that still rankles me. |

2025 Amazon Prime and free on Tubi "Drected by Eddie Mensore, unveils a haunting look at a mining town entangled in the grip of the opioid crisis. In this intense drama, Will, a reluctant drug dealer played by Alex Roe, fights to shield his family from the same devastating addiction that has ravaged their community. " Sosie Bacon from the first Smile is in it and a good performance along with the lead Alex Roe. Worth a watch for the performances alone. |

Dr. No (1962) — Wow really good. Realized I never watched this gem. AN/D what an impact it was back in the early sixties.

No Time To Die Universal 4K Daniel Craig. Directed by Cary Juji Fukunaga. 2021 Bond has left active service. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology. It took a while to get from "Spectre" to "No Time To Die", -for a minute there it was going to be a Danny Boyle film, -and it certainly wasn't helped by The Pandemic. The film finally got to theaters, directed for the first time by an American, -Cary Fukunaga (director of the first season of HBO's "True Detective") who does a fairly impressive job here. I enjoyed "No Time" much more than "Spectre", even though its entirely too long. It certainly fits in with the glum tone of the previous Daniel Craig Bonds. Not that I'm complaining, -the Moore and Brosnan era had their share of uncomfortably Camp moments, -but there were times when earlier Bonds had moments of fun with their job, and that's certainly missing here. I seem to remember some youtubers trying to make a scandal out of Lashana Lynch playing the newly designated "007", but it didn't bother me much. Lynch is competent, but the character is just a plot point and like most of the Women cast in the Craig "Bonds", she doesn't make much of an impression. However, Ana De Armas as CIA agent "Paloma" just dominates her little section of the film and I only wish she were in more of it. The disc is terrific and includes a relatively small set of bonus features that are actually in 2160p on the 4K (which rarely happens). The 4K also includes (in 1080p) an excellent hour-long documentary covering the five Craig films, and it's very upfront about the trials and travails of bringing them to the screen. |

Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere Hulu Jeremy Allen White. Directed by Scott Cooper. 2025 Bruce Springsteen, a young musician on the cusp of global superstardom, struggles to reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past. Back in The Eighties, I had a friend who was an Old School Bruce Springsteen fan, way before "Born In The USA" made him a superstar. He would trade bootlegs with other fans, and he would tell legends of Bruce making surprise appearances at various venues, and of Bruce performing three-hour encores and having to be pulled off the stage and such. I eventually joined him to see Springsteen when toured this region, and while it was fine he couldn't quite live up to the stories that had been told, and I barely remember the performance. "Deliver Me From Nowhere" is a gloomy, downbeat story of Bruce Springsteen dealing with depression while putting together the "Nebraska" album. Jeremy Allen White does an outstanding vocal impression of the artist. Jeremy Strong (of "Succession") gives a terrific performance as his manager Jon Landau, though it's very much a PERFORMANCE while all the other players (White, Paul Walter Hauser, Stephen Graham) come across as more natural. Bruce has a "composite" love interest so that we have that story, but it feels rather contrived and predictable since we know Bruce's balls and strikes marriage-wise. Much like "Nebraska" it's a well-constructed project and I can appreciate its intent, but I was really hoping for something I could sing along with. |

The Patriot (4K)…saw this once and remember liking it. The 4K audio and visuals are quite a treat. Especially John Williams’ score. Always liked Mel too. Good movie.

Starz It took a couple of minutes to get in with the characters but not bad. I think Mark Hamill did no prep work and just decided to use his Joker cartoon voice. |

Netflix It was not great but not horrible either though kind of long. I hope Sandler continues to expand his range since he can do drama too which we already know. |

Send Help (2026) — Pretty fun dark comedy-horror that features two solid performances from Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien. Some decent enough gore and as a whole a good way to spend two hours. Not sure I'll revisit even on home video but still entertaining, nevertheless. ***˝/*****

Boogie Nights Warner Bros 4K Mark Wahlberg. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. 1997 Idealistic producer Jack Horner has always dreamed of elevating his films into an art form. When he discovers young actor Eddie Adams, Jack begins to turn his dreams into reality. Under the stage name of Dirk Diggler, Eddie soon gives the adult entertainment world a star the likes of which it has never seen. I haven't seen "Boogie Nights in a decade or two, but it remains a terrific piece of entertainment with a wonderful cast of characters portrayed by an astonishing group of actors. It's a shame that Burt Reynolds was so ambivalent about the film since it's the high point of his later career if not his entire career. The film also features a marvelous "Needle-drop" score that's just one delightful song after another that helps it flow smoothly even though it's a really long film. The package adds two new retrospective features with the director and includes a legacy commentary that's probably more revealing than it would be were it conducted today. |

Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man! HBO Mel Brooks. Directed by Judd Apatow, Michael Bonfiglio. 2026 A Documentary exploring the life and career of Writer/Director/Performer Mel Brooks. HBO turns out another terrific documentary in the form of two 100-minute films. The first covers Mel's career up to his breakout film "Blazing Saddles" and the second ends with the proposal of sequels to some of his biggest hits. Though I've heard most of these stories time and again the production remains thoroughly entertaining. Judd Apatow also realizes that Mel has told these vintage stories over and over so he often intercuts snippets of Mel telling his well-worn anecdotes on various talk shows and venues over the decades. It's a clever approach that really shows the passage of time and how Mel has out-lasted everyone else. Being an old man myself, the documentary really hits on thoughts of Mortality. The films reflects on Mel's marvelous relationship with his wife Anne Bancroft, and it's hard to believe she has been gone for twenty years. It's very touching and I can only wish I had something like that in my life. Mel then started a routine of joining his old friend and fellow widower Carl Reiner every night eating dinner on a tray and watching "Jeopardy". Carl would die in 2020 but Mel carries on. |

Afterburn MGM+ Dave Bautista. Directed by JJ Perry. 2025 After a massive solar flare destroys the Earth's eastern hemisphere, an emboldened treasure hunter for hire adventures to Europe to uncover the coveted Mona Lisa, only to learn the world needs a hero more than it needs a painting. Seeing that "Afterburn" was directed by JJ Perry, a former stunt man and fight choreographer, I kind of knew what to expect, -a group fight or a featured stunt every five or ten minutes, and that's exactly what I got. At least the film allows Dave Bautista and Olga Kurylenko to show some personality every once in a while. Otherwise, it's perfectly adequate. |
