Shelby Oaks Decal Releasing DVD
Camille Sullivan. Directed by Chris Stuckman. 2025
A woman's desperate search for her long-lost sister falls into obsession upon realizing that the imaginary demon from their childhood may have been real.

Chris Stuckman was an online movie critic for years. He created a bit of a stir when he announced he would no longer post negative reviews (which didn't seem like a big deal to me, but that's The internet for you). Meanwhile, Stuckman was putting together a film he co-wrote and directed. The production of "Shelby Oaks" was crowdfunded and then noted Horror Director Mike Flanagan ("Doctor Sleep") joined the film as Executive Producer, consulting with Stuckman throughout the filming. Flanagan brought in other directors like David Sandberg to provide notes during post-production. Re-shoots added some gore. Reviews were mixed and the initial Box Office wasn't impressive. Still, the budget was low, and it probably made a profit in the long run.

The First Act of "Shelby Oaks really worked for me.

Spoiler:
The film begins as a fairly standard "Found Footage" Thriller. It's all low-rez digital camera footage from an internet series "Paranormal Paranoids" featuring four youtubers investigating a prison in the ghost town of Shelby Oaks. The video is all washed out and framed in 1:33:1, with lots of jumps and artifacts. We see the interplay between the characters including Riley Brennan and her three friends as they follow their leads. The crew mysteriously goes missing, and eventually three of their mangled bodies are discovered. Riley is still missing and twelve years later her sister Mia is still searching for her. SMASHCUT! to Titles and we get the opening credits fifteen minutes in. Suddenly the film is in Feature Format, with an aggressive score and shown in widescreen.

The rest of the “Shelby Oaks” features a glossy look with effectively framed shots. The score is quite effective and ratchets up the Suspense. It looks and feels like a proper Horror Movie and not just schlock. However, It's just not very original. The middle of the film features a lot of scenes of Mia searching for her lost sister in a “Scooby-Doo” fashion, cautiously walking into dark locations with her flashlight at the ready. The Final Act finally gets more aggressive and includes a cabin in the woods, a creepy old woman offering “snacks”, hellhounds with glowing eyes, and a demon-spawned baby (or is it?).

"Shelby Oaks" is one of those films where it looks good by Low Budget Horror standards, but I really never got engrossed in it. I'll definitely keep an eye on Chris Stuckman, if just to see if he can turn out a better second film without all the helping hands.

HBO Max

It got mixed reviews and maybe a little ridiculous and over the top and really long but I liked it.

Joaquin Phoenix should have gotten another Oscar nomination for this.

"Aiden (Josh Lawson) yearns for a better life and to get away from his grisly job as a crime scene photographer. As his dark imagination leaks into reality, he meets a younger woman with her own problems and begins to live out his vigilante fantasies."

This was better than I expected

Project Hail Mary Amazon/MGM
Ryan Gosling. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. 2026
A lone astronaut wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of his mission. As he pieces together his past, he discovers he’s humanity’s last hope against an extinction-level threat, leading to an unexpected yet crucial alliance.

Excellent film. I've been dodging spoilers for weeks now, and I'm glad "Project Hail Mary" lived up to the hype for me. However, it's a long film and while it has a light-but-not-too-light touch that makes the time fly by, it's tough on the constitution of an old man at a very early show. I thought I was going to hold out, -we were clearly approaching the end, -when another plot complication reared its head and I knew I didn't stand a chance if I didn't make a quick break. Still, it's a charming film that balances humor and sincerity quite nicely.

Kinda been avoiding this because it sounded...slow, and long. But finally watched it on TCM and really liked it. Running time went by quickly too .

When I was a little kid, all I wanted to watch was Horror and "Monster Movies". The local TV station ran "The Best Years of Our Lives" during Prime Time one Friday Night for some reason and we watched it as a family. I stayed with it all the way through and really enjoyed it, and it was just this really moving story about People. I consider it my first "Grown Up" movie.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I became engaged in the lives of the three of them and seeing how they acclimated back into society.

Deadgirl (2008)

"We could keep her ..."

A girl shy 17 year old high school kid named Rickie (played by Joaquin Phoenix lookalike Shiloh Fernandez) is persuaded by his delinquent friend JT to skip class and break into the local abandoned psychiatric hospital with him to chug some beers and let off some steam by trashing the place. While checking out the tunnels in the basement, they discover a hidden door and decide to pry it open to see what's inside. What they find leaves them in disbelief ... a naked woman covered in plastic and chained to a gurney. Who she is and how long she has been there is a complete mystery. Rickie wants to notify the police but JT is in no such hurry. As they debate what they should do, her body stirs ... revealing that she is still alive. JT suggests that the two of them take advantage of the situation while she is captive in this state but Rickie wants no part of that and insists that they contact the authorities, resulting in a physical altercation with JT and ending with Rickie storming off home. When JT informs Rickie the next day that the woman is not entirely human, and then decides to divulge their secret to a third party, things start to spiral out of control.

This was the first - and only - movie produced by Hollywoodmade, a now defunct production company, and made its debut at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival. It stayed on the festival circuit for the remainder of the year before being released by Dark Sky Films in 2009. It is an interesting take on the zombie horror genre and one that I enjoyed. Jenny Spain did a very nice job in a difficult role, as she was nude the entire time. Shiloh Fernandez impressed me as a sympathetic protagonist attempting to do the right thing. Likewise Noah Segan as the opportunistic JT. It was cool seeing Michael Bowen in a supporting role as Rickie's mother's alcoholic boyfriend, as well. Overall, this is a decent little atmospheric and unsettling horror flick that begs the question ... what would you do?

2024

Starz

"In the 1970s Florida, a driver in a white van follows a young girl seemingly everywhere she goes. As the menace escalates, her parents dismiss her fears, leading to a terrifying Halloween nightmare that shatters her world."

It was entertaining for a while and watching Sean Astin and Ali Larter play a couple and they produced the film.

It was meant to help missing children but a weird movie to show that message.

The ending left room for a possible sequel.

Pretty Lethal Amazon Prime
Maddie Ziegler, Uma Thurman. Directed by Vicky Jewson. 2026
A ballet troupe is forced to take shelter when their bus breaks down enroute to a prestigious competition and must use their training to fight back when a gang of armed men target them.

"Pretty Lethal" is a low-budget feature that was shot in Budapest. It was co-produced by 87North, the company founded by Stuntmen, whose previous films include "Nobody", "Violent Night" and "Bullet Train". I went in knowing nothing and expecting something like a spin-off of "Ballerina", with young women trained to be killers, but, no, they're just an accomplished but somewhat dysfunctional group of dancers who eventually rise to the situation and find their inner badass.

You would think this would be played for laughs, but this film has more in common with "Hostel" than "The Fall Guy". This is set in the Eastern Europe of your nightmares, with an atmosphere that is genuinely dark and nasty. I was surprised how gruesome the film the gets, with bullets to the head, slashed throats, amputations, brandings, and some of the girls are savagely beaten.

Long-time Dancer Maddie Ziegler gets the tough-girl lead role; Maddie is a veteran of "Dance Moms" and working with infamous coach Abby Lee Miller was probably good training for this film. For a moment I didn't recognize Uma Thurman as the one-legged Big Bad with a thick accent. She finally gets to chew all the scenery in her final scene.

I thought "Pretty Lethal" was good dumb fun, and I only say "dumb" because you're supposed to. You just have to come in with a relaxed relationship with Credibility. There is a showdown about one hour in between the girls and a group of knife-wielding thugs that is pretty cool. Ridiculous, but cool, and I imagine this scene was in the original pitch and the rest of the film was built around it.

Well, I went back a few times. They had 279 titles to choose from and I either had them already or was waiting for the price to drop on one of the sites. But they are: Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, The Exorcist, Edge of Tomorrow, The Town, Wonder Woman, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Shawshank Redemption, The Maltese Falcon, Smokey and the Bandit, and Spartacus (never seen before),

Primate Paramount+
Johnny Sequoyah. Directed by Johannes Roberts. 2025
A group of friends must protect themselves during a pool party when the host family's pet chimpanzee contracts rabies and turns vicious.

Earlier this evening I put a "Hold" on "Primate" at my County Library (the disc comes out in 4 weeks). An hour later I got an e-mail from Paramount+ that "Primate" was available now on their service. That was handy...

I wasn't expecting much based on the trailers, but I had a good time with "Primate". It's an efficient little "B" movie with a nice level of suspense and some really brutal violence. Honestly, I was really surprised at how gruesome this film gets. Then again, if you've seen the HBO documentary about some of the crazy people who keep chimps as pets, you know how physically powerful these animals are; you do not want to get on their bad side. The cast is satisfactory, but they are mostly there to be cannon-fodder for Ben, The Psycho Chimp.

And that's my one problem with "Primate", -the chimp is played by a performer in a suit. It's a good suit, mind you, but it's not as convincing as motion capture would have been (though it is considerably cheaper). I just never really bought "Ben" as a real monkey, -he's just a short, hairy "Jason Voorhees". Perhaps that's the point. Perhaps the filmmakers thought if he looked like a 100% real chimp, it might get the sympathy of the audience, or he wouldn't be threatening enough.

Agree. I wish they'd stop putting non actors in films. Or at least do a better job directing them. Same goes for that douche Kevin O'Leary in "Marty Supreme".

Hulu

"Arrogant Judge Stefan Mortensen suffers a near-fatal stroke, leaving him partially paralyzed and confined to a retirement home. Resistant to the staff and distant from his friendly roommate, Mortensen soon clashes with seemingly gentle resident Dave Crealy who secretly terrorizes the home with a sadistic game called "The Rule of Jenny Pen" while wielding his dementia doll as an instrument of cruelty."

It was not bad though kind of slow.

Lithgow always brings it when he is playing a creep and I have not seen Geoffrey Rush in a long time and he has aged considerably.

We Bury the Dead Vertical Entertainment Blu-Ray
Daisy Ridley. Directed by Zak Hilditch. 2024
Ava, a desperate woman whose husband is missing in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment, joins a "body retrieval unit," but her search takes a chilling turn when the corpses she's burying start showing signs of life.

"We Bury the Dead" suffers a bit from being yet another "Zombie Apocalypse" Movie. "Dead" also suffers from being a "slow burn", and more of a mood piece on Relationships, and Grief, and the things we can't let go of. It's definitely not an Action film but instead sets up a (mostly random) series of Suspense vignettes, some of them quite good.

When "We Bury the Dead" works, it's mostly because of its Cinematography, -it is a beautiful-looking film. And to his credit, Director Zak Hilditch knows how to shoot an effective suspense scene, and he frames his shots in an eye-catching way. When you're not distracted by the beautiful scenery, you definitely know you're in a Horror Film. Hilditch is just not a particularly successful writer. His characters aren't all that appealing nor are they all that layered. It's a very downbeat film. The end of the film (which I won't spoil) is supposed to be touching and ironic, but I found it a bit of an eye-roller. I'd be interested in seeing Hilditch's next film, but I hope he finds better script.

According to Hilditch an American bio-weapon caused the Zombie Virus, which currently only afflicts Tasmania. British "Star Wars" vet Daisy Ridley plays a visiting American wife with a flat accent and an agenda. I've got a feeling the Writer-Director has got a Political message he wants to deliver, but he pretty much keeps it stuffed among the mangled corpses. Ridley is fine in the role, but she doesn't generate a lot of excitement. I didn't immediately recognize Brenton Thwaites ("Nightwing" in DC's generally terrific "Titans" TV series) as a maybe-maybe not love interest for Ridley.

Madness (1994) — I do like some of these giallo movies with some of inane writing and laughable twists, they tend to be a lot of the so bad, it's good fun. This isn't one of them as it drags quite a bit and the dubbing was just terrible and plenty of over-acting, though Monica Carpanese is quite fetching. It's also very predictable with the killer being obvious very early on. I guess if you were to watch this in a group setting to laugh at the sillier moments, it might be worth a try, but seeing this alone it was a chore to sit through. **/***** (Blu-ray)
