2024 Netflix "When a killer (Finn Wittrock) injects her (Kelsey Asbille) with a paralytic agent, a woman must run, fight and hide before her body completely shuts down." At first I tought the movie would take place in just one setting with that plot description. |

Trapped in Paradise (1994, Dir. George Gallo) – You know, you really gotta wonder just how extensively this movie was rewritten (if it was), because it just seems too disjointed for this to have been the original plan. Or concept. Or whatever. Because George Gallo wrote the classic buddy picture, Midnight Run, and then somehow wrote this completely unfunny abomination that has, for its three leads: Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Dana Carvey. And they play three bank-robbing brothers who, in an apparent “comedy of errors,” are prevented from high-tailing it outta town, and are left trapped, forced to avoid the town police, the FBI, and some other criminals that lay claim to the loot. But my question is thus: Was this originally a darker, more adult thriller? Was Cage cast first? Was it only then that they changed their tune and decided to make it a comedy? Once they figured they could pair Cage with two former SNL cast members? Or were Carvey and Lovitz hired first, and that somehow piqued Cage’s interest? Whatever the hell occurred, the end result was NOT good. Carvey is painfully unfunny. I know his thing is impersonations, but would it have killed him to act the slight bit “normal” in this picture? And Cage is at a complete loss trying to sell some comedic lines or physical gags. Lovitz is probably the only one who somewhat sells his character, but even he just isn’t given enough opportunities to be funny. The only aspect of the film that I did find funny was the actress that played their mother. She had some lines that made me chuckle. But again, she almost seems to be in a different film, as her lines are pretty vulgar for a film that is doing everything it can to appeal to like, I don’t know, the 8-10-year-old market. Like, most adults aren’t going to laugh at the schtick in this movie. And then it also tries to shoehorn in this horses**t romance between Cage’s character and one of the bank tellers (played by Madchen Amick from Twin Peaks). It makes no sense and is so underdeveloped that you have to wonder if that wasn’t the brainchild of some studio executive, who felt that a romantic angle was necessary to draw in the female audience (a condescending view, mind you)…This is a bad movie on every level and is one of the worst films Cage has ever done… It feels like this movie had the type of script that had been floating around for years, had went through various incarnations, and then, when it was finally given the green light, became some sort of bizarre amalgamation of aspects from all of those individual drafts…A mishmash of ideas with no central nexus holding it all together… I have not seen that in a long time I assume this will never get a blu-ray or 4k release and DVD is the only format. |

1983 - Criterion is spotlighting some of Gene Hackman's movies, including some which weren't hits. Like most Nicolas Roeg movies it has lots of cuts to make you feel disoriented. The first act is very interesting with Gene Hackman discovering gold and a nice supporting role from Helena Kallianiotes. Then it jumps 20 years to where he is rich in the Bahamas and the movie falls apart. Some odd casting choices too. Mickey Rourke as a buttoned down lawyer and Joe Pesci as a Jewish mobster? |

The Crazies Arrow Blu-Ray Lane Carroll. Directed by George Romero. 1973 When a plane carrying secret biological weapon crash-lands near a small, rural town, the area descends into chaos. Having just watched the 2010 remake of “The Crazies”, I thought I would re-visit George Romero’s 1973 original, which he filmed between “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead”. Romero’s film is a surprisingly solid Drive-In Exploitation film, but, sadly, it was not a success. Back then, it could have just as easily been poor distribution or inadequate promotion, rather than a negative reception of the film. It was filmed in Western Pennsylvania on a low budget and it’s rough around the edges, giving it a Documentary feel at times. Romero mostly shot in actual locations rather than constructed sets, and the disc has a nice featurette revisiting the small town where he filmed, which hasn't changed all that much since1973. Breck Eisner's remake plays as a solid “Second Draft” of Romero’s original. The script tightens up the story structure and mostly improves it, delivering a more Commercial film with stronger (if more predictable) Action Beats. However, Romero’s film is a little less structured, takes more chances and feels more personal. |

I didn't see a separate thread for this new release, but I just came back from seeing Tornado. Tim Roth leads a band of criminals who have their loot stolen by a local child who then hides out with an Asian father daughter couple, and violence ensues. The daughter goes from looking helpless running and hiding for 2/3rds of the movie, then somehow has super samurai skills and violently goes after the criminals one by one as they search for her. I enjoy these independent writer/director type movies, kind of Tarantino inspired movies like this, so worth an A-list slot (which at 4 per week, I'll never use then up, I've seen 10 of 11 movies playing at the local AMC, with only Last Rodeo not seen).

The Beast Within Kino Lorber Blu-Ray Paul Clemens. Directed by Phillippe Mora. 1982 18-year-old Michael MacLeary - the progeny of an unholy union between his mother and a swamp beast - is on the verge of becoming a man. And as the inherited evil in his blood gnaws at his soul, Michael must return to the swamp to uncover the terrifying identity of his father - before his nasty natural tendencies force him to feed on the locals! "The Beast Within" was Siskel and Ebert's "Dog of the Week" back in 1982. I remember seeing it originally when it first hit cable; I was rooting for it but it's a truly terrible film with a lot of talent attached to it. The script by Tom Holland (Writer/Director of "Fright Night" and "Child's Play") involves a Southern Gothic tale of a vengeful husband who keeps his wife's lover chained in the basement for 17 years, keeping him alive by feeding him corpses. The prisoner eventually escapes and rapes a newlywed bride, and she is impregnated with his cursed spawn, who seventeen years later is an otherwise normal teen who is slowly turning into a cannibalistic Cicada monster that will carry out his father's vengeance on the cuckolded husband. Holland says the script actually makes sense, but the producer ruined it by cutting necessary expository scenes to save money. The film is also hurt by its prosthetic make-up effects that are literally stretched beyond their capabilities and just look ridiculous. There's a great cast of familiar faces including Ronny Cox, Bibi Besch, Don Gordon, RG Armstrong, LQ Jones, and Luke Askew. I've always wanted to like this film, -and I hoped it would get better with time and reflection, -but no such luck. I mean, it wants to be a good old-fashioned "Monster Movie" in the worst way, -and I guess it succeeded. It's hard to justify the graphic rape scenes that bookend the film. Veteran composer Les Baxter's dynamic score captures the spirit the filmmakers were going for but didn't quite achieve. The Kino disc features three commentary tracks and an excellent retrospective feature that catches up with the surviving cast and writer Tom Holland, who defends himself admirably. |

OK jungle adventure. Chandler is foreman for a mining company. He and his crew arrive on South Pacific island to mine tin. He acquires a deal with the king of the local natives (Quinn) to trade labor for medical supplies. Things go south and soon they're exchanging bullets and poison blow darts. A young Scatman Crothers, Peter Graves and Earl Holliman in the cast. Suzan Ball was one cute gal. Sadly, she died a year or two later from cancer at 21-22 years old. |

2025 "Lily Trevino unexpectedly befriends an online stranger, sharing her self-centered father's name. This new Bob Trevino's support could transform her life." I used my Amazon Digital credits and rented this. It is a Liongate release so maybe it comes to Starz in the future? Get the kleenex ready for this but worth a watch and Leguizamo is one of the more underrated actors when he does drama. A rare French Stewart sighting and he was pretty good as the prick real dad. |

In the Shadow of the Moon (2019, Dir. Jim Mickle) – A very, very ambitious film from Jim Mickle, whose previous film was the masterful neo-noir Cold in July. Generally categorized as a serial killer film, it sees cops Locke (Boyd Holbrook) and Maddox (Bokeem Woodbine) investigate after a bizarre night in which several strangers suffer from the same sudden brain aneurysm and die as a result. Locke gives pursuit to a suspect but she is either killed or otherwise vanishes, and Locke suspects the latter when nine years later the same series of sudden deaths begins to occur. But Michael C. Hall’s detective (and brother-in-law), Holt, is skeptical of Locke’s investigation and is intent on pursuing rational avenues; unwilling to suspend his disbelief and admit that an irrational answer might just be the way forward. Holbrook and Woodbine have good chemistry as partners, and Hall is great as Holbrook’s straight-laced in-law/doubter. Now, the film is not without flaws. There are a few too many instances of shoddy police work/procedure, at least early on. Like, if you know a suspect is around a corner, you’re probably going to take that corner wide, giving yourself enough space and physical distance so as not to come within arm’s reach of said suspect. This is ignored to Woodbine’s cop’s peril. Also early on Locke is engaged in detaining a suspect and she gets the better of him when he becomes distracted for simple plot purposes. However, these instances are few and far between and are never so egregious that they completely take you out of the movie. And they’re ultimately little nitpicks because the movie is so engaging for most of its running time that you simply look past them. Look, the action is top-notch; there’s gunplay, chase scenes, stunts, explosions; it’s locked and loaded. Now the question is does it overreach at the end? Because... Spoiler:
...and it’s really up to the viewer to decide whether or not to buy in. I mostly went with it…It’s capital-B “BOLD.” It’s Mickle really reaching for the stars. Now I don’t think he quite accomplishes that, and I think the film maybe should’ve been sold a little differently (or at least have the plot synopsis be a little more descriptive and accurate), but this is still a really, really good film. It just ventures down certain pathways that I did NOT anticipate. But Mickle’s a great director. Cold in July is proof of that. And this one maintains the same serious tone of that one, but adds a little bit of Gilliam into the mix…It's a solid, entertaining, intelligent movie...And a topical one, at that... I have that in my que but constantly ignore it but will probably check it out soon. |

The Duchess Amazon Prime Charlotte Kirk. Directed by Neil Marshall. 2024 A tough, working-class, petty criminal morphs into an anti-heroine to be reckoned in the treacherous world of diamond smuggling. I'll always check out a Neil Marshall film. Neil impressed me with "The Descent" and "Centurion" and the ambitious "Doomsday". We'll just ignore his 2019 "Hellboy", which Neil himself has disowned. A few years back Neil met actress Charlotte Kirk, who has apparently become his muse, the Bo Derek to his John Derek, his Milla Jovovich to his Paul WS Anderson. Neil has now made four films starring Kirk, which she also co-scripted and produced. Their latest film is "The Duchess". "The Duchess" is a violent Crime Film, very much in the smart-ass style of Guy Ritchie. Charlotte Kirk provides the sardonic voice-over narration introducing the players as well as the game, all in a broad Cockney accent. It's mildly entertaining even though I've seen it all before. My problem with "The Duchess" is Charlotte Kirk, who is dead in the eyes and lacks the connection and charisma to carry the film. She's something of a candy shell, with nothing in the center, even when she goes "Full Jason Statham" for the last third of the film. |

1953. Ryan and Quinn are salvage divers hired by a shipping company to find and salvage a cargo ship that sunk off the coast of Jamaica. Ship contained a cargo of gold. Usual shenanigans of ship not being where it's supposed be. Turns out the wreck landed in the middle of the sunken city of Port Royal. Some cool footage of deep diving in those suits with the helmets and air hoses. Voodoo cult that believes diving into the sunken city is taboo but that angle never goes anywhere. One thing I noticed was the use of music ques from Creature From Black Lagoon and it's two sequels. Also reused in some other Universal B pictures. This movie predates the first Creature by a year. |

The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie Ketchup Entertainment Blu-Ray Directed by Peter Browngardt. 2024 Porky and Daffy, the classic animated odd couple, turn into unlikely heroes when their antics at the local bubblegum factory uncover a secret alien mind control plot. Against all odds, the two are determined to save their town (and the world!) "The Day The Earth Blew UP" was produced by WB Animation but dumped as a potential write-off by Studio Boss David Zaslav. Ketchup Entertainment came in and gave the film a brief Theatrical release to disappointing box office and then dropped it on a budget disc with no extras. The animation looks more like "Ren and Stimpy" than Classic Warner Brothers but the color palette is gorgeous. Unfortunately (from my point-of-view) the film is aimed more at children than at older fans of the original cartoons. I mean that makes sense, but I'm just talking about my entertainment level. The story also tones down Daffy and makes him less subversive than I like. They've also added "Petunia Pig" as a love interest for Porky, but she's written as a Sitcom character rather than as a Cartoon, and she seems like she's in a different film from Porky and Daffy. It's an inoffensive little timewaster but it really didn't pluck at my nostalgic heartstrings. Ketchup has expressed interest in releasing "Coyote vs Acme", a blend of live action and animation ala "Roger Rabbit" that Warner Brothers has also consigned to the scrap heap. It sounds clever and I would like to see it. By the way, Warners hasn't given up on Looney Tunes entirely. After a long hiatus, they've started turning out lovingly curated "Collector's Choice" compilations of the original cartoons, many unavailable for years and years. They lack the extensive extras of the DVD-era compilations, but they look great and are reasonably priced. |

Rolling Vengeance Kino Lorber Blu-Ray Don Michael Paul. Directed by Steven Hilliard Stern. 1987 When a clan of drunken goons get off scot-free after senselessly killing a young trucker’s family, the trucker, Joey Rosso (Don Michael Paul), takes matters into his own hands by building the ultimate monster truck to even the score. "Rolling Vengeance" is a satisfactory "Revenge" film. Don Michael Paul was a good-looking but bland leading man; he'd eventually find his true calling as a prolific Director of Direct-to-Video Films and Television Action Dramas. Ned Beatty plays a redneck villain with a greasy Fifties hairstyle and leather jacket, and he seems to be having fun with the role. It takes about an hour of Beatty's redneck family committing violations against our hero before Paul builds his monster truck and sets out to destroy his enemies. It's a fine idea and an impressive truck but you want a lot less build-up and a lot more demolishing. |

The Woman in the Yard Universal Studios Blu-Ray Danielle Deadwyler. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. 2025 A mysterious woman repeatedly appears in a family's front yard, often delivering chilling warnings and unsettling messages, leaving them to question her identity, motives and the potential danger she might pose. The Woman in the Yard" is yet another Blumhouse "Budget Meal" Thriller that didn't make a ripple at the box office. It's a Psychological Horror Film with an unfamiliar cast (maybe I'm watching the wrong films) from Jaume Collet-Serra. Collet-Serra usually directs Over-The-Top Action Fare like "Black Adam" and "Jungle Cruise" and this was a bit more low-key than I expected. "Woman in the Yard" deals with Ramona and her two children trying to cope with the loss of her husband and their father in a traffic accident. Blaming herself for the crash, Ramona is clearly being eaten up with self-loathing and barely hanging on. Her teen-age son Taylor seems disdainful of her, and questions her every decision. The first two thirds of the film deal with the tensions that are tearing the family apart, which are exacerbated by a spectral figure shrouded in black that suddenly appears seated in a chair in their front yard. The final third finally has "The Woman" leaving her chair and advancing on the house, and like "Nosferatu" her shadow can reach into the house and do real physical harm. The Woman appears individually to the children and tries to get into their heads. She then appears to Ramona, confronting her with dark truths and pushing her to consider suicide. There's a final reveal that explains the identity of "The Woman" but it's not all that satisfying. There's a bit of a trick the filmmakers have played on the audience to keep them from guessing what's going on from very early in the film. I will say the tension and the angst of the characters feels very real, -or real enough, -and the way teen-aged Taylor treats his mother infuriated me (though they try to soften him up later). I just found "The Woman in the Yard" very unpleasant to watch. It should be appearing on Peacock in the near future. |
