Added to cart. I always wanted to see Flesh for Frankenstein as well but the version I want appears to be discontinued...Been waiting for a a new edition or for that other one to go back in print...I've seen screen grabs of both movies and I think Flesh for Frankenstein is even featured in one of those Taschen movies of the decade books...

I've watched both and Blood For Dracula is the better of the two, IMO. It ticks all the boxes for what I want a 1970s Eurocult horror film to be.

It's the Citizen Kane of Eurosleaze!

Spoiler:
;)

Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning Paramount
Tom Cruise. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie. 2025
Ethan Hunt and the IMF team continue their search for the terrifying AI known as the Entity - which has infiltrated intelligence networks all over the globe - with the world's governments and a mysterious ghost from Ethan's past on their trail.

I've always enjoyed the "Mission: Impossible" films, and it's a series I've rewatched more than most in my collection. "The Final Reckoning" is the longest and most relentlessly serious film of the franchise. It's essentially a Nuclear Armageddon story that certainly references "Fail-Safe" and requires more dialogue and exposition than some audiences will be happy with. While it's a bit slower at times than the previous entries, the action picks up with a contrived but entertaining air chase in the final hour and I felt it ended well. While the film definitely establishes "The Entity" as a cataclysmic threat, I honestly would have preferred a flesh-and-blood villain, even though Esai Morales is intended to fill that role to some extent. There are points where it's hard to tell who is on whose side and who they're shooting at and why. The script does do a nice job of tying all the films in the series together, even though they were not conceived that way, and I'll give McQ points for his inspired use of a background player from a previous film.

I wanted to look it and it seems like it had Big Lewboski vibes but not nearly as funny or entertaining.

If Chrie Pine directs again hope he picks a better project.

How the West Was Won (Smile Box Version) Warner Bros Blu-Ray
Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck. Directed by Henry Hathaway, George Marshall, John Ford. 1962
A story following a family’s move West through several generations.

As a kid, I loved "Monster Movies", Horror and Science Fiction; I wasn't interested in my father's beloved old Westerns. Then one Sunday "The ABC Sunday Night Movie" showed "How the West Was Won" and it really grabbed my attention (even though Television was only showing me one-quarter of what was shown in the theater). My parents were glad to see my interest in something "normal" for a change and let me stay up late to watch the movie all the way through. It was a memorable moment for me.

I consider "West" a Classic, and if it really isn't, it's pretty darn close. It's rousing, and cornball, and visually sprawling, and it features as many "name" actors as MGM could sign. The film isn't deep but it's sincere, and the film busts its ass to entertain the audience. The story begins with the early settlers and continues through the Gold Rush, The Civil War, and the building of the railroads that opened the West. Being a film from 1962, some elements haven't aged well, but it also features some deserved cynicism about the treatment of Native Americans. The film stars John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, Richard Widmark, Gregory Peck, Debbie Reynolds, Spencer Tracy and on, and on, and on. It's an incredible cast list. This is the film that introduced me to George Peppard, who has a terrific Hero's Arc in the film. The film features a magnificent score by Alfred Newman, and Debbie Reynolds, a showgirl in the film, gets to perform five numbers.

"West" was filmed in Cinerama, a format that was the IMAX of its time. It involved three giant screens joined together, and it had amazing focus, detail and scope. Cinerama was shown in special theaters with curved screens, creating an amazing visual depth. The "Smile Box" version curves the traditional letterboxing (see above) and better approximates the Cinerama illusion. It just takes a minute or two to get used to, but it really improves the film experience. This is the version generally shown on Turner Classic Movies. The picture quality is only flawed by being artificially brightened, as home video often is.

Starz

I guess it is nice that Walhberg did not play the hero or the good guy and trying to expand his rage and going bald too.

If you think Topher Grace is annoying this movie won't change your mind.

The Boogens Olive Blu-Ray
Rebecca Balding. Directed by James L. Conway. 1981
In a small town near Denver, two young men begin to explore a long-abandoned old mine recently reopened by a group of miners. They’re unaware of the evil that’s been unleashed and soon, one by one, an unseen monster snatches up the townspeople.

Back in 1981, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near a movie called "The Boogens", or a Monster Movie from the producers of "Grizzly Adams", ...unless it got a big endorsement from Stephen King. And you what, it turned out to be pretty good. I've probably had this disc for over 12 years, so I decided that maybe it was time to open it.

"The Boogens" was a "Creature Feature" in the midst of a sea of mean-spirited "Slashers", "The Boogens" is predictable, but it has a certain "B" movie charm. It helps that the characters are good-natured, and the dialogue often feels natural. However, I remembered the "Feature" having a lot more "Creature" than it actually does. The monster isn't revealed until the last ten minutes and once you see it, you realize why it's been kept in the shadows. The picture quality of Olive's disc is quite good, and I've heard it's preferable to Kino Lorber's 4K.

Hadn't seen this in almost 35 years. Saw it at theater and maybe again when VHS was released, but not since. Always considered it an essential to own and bought in on VHS, DVD, and BD but never got around to watching it until now. Always remembered the basic plot but forgot the details. Once you start watching it comes back to you.

The Chosen Amazon Prime
Kirk Douglas. Directed by Alberto De Martino. 1977
An executive in charge of a Middle Eastern nuclear plant discovers his son is the Anti-Christ and sets out to stop him from using the nuclear power to wipe out mankind.

I was curious about "The Chosen" (aka "Holocaust 2000"); seeing the trailer I expected a schlocky "The Omen" rip-off and I was up for that. That's not what I got, though. Kirk Douglas gives a perfectly sound, professional performance that seems sincere and committed. Perhaps he thought the film was making an Anti-Nuclear statement. The film is clearly influenced by the success of "The Omen" and it has all the trappings, -Apocalyptic visions, dire warnings of The Antichrist, bizarre "accidental" deaths" -but the director really doesn't exploit the Melodrama in a fun way. It's all very dry. The film ends abruptly with a contrived ending done without the participation of Kirk Douglas. I was thinking that what the film truly needed was Jerry Goldsmith, -the man whose score gave "The Omen" such a foreboding edge, -but then I remembered the composer of "The Chosen" was Ennio Morricone, and I'm surprised he didn't do something more memorable. Let's just say I went in for a cheeseburger and what I got was a fish sandwich.

Night of the Missing Cinedigm Blu-Ray
Meredith Thomas. Directed by Samuel Gonzalez Jr. 2023
On a stormy Christmas eve night, a secretive, small-town sheriff gets a visit from a mysterious woman who recounts a series of bizarre stories involving missing persons. Both disturbing and unsettling, the most terrifying realization may be that the monster behind them is much closer than anyone thinks.

This is a "Screambox (Channel) Original", which means that it was put together with Elmer's Glue and pocket change. It's an Anthology of "Spooky Stories" of Teens and Adolescents who have ended up as faces on "Missing Persons" wall in a small-town Police Station on a stormy night. The stories are thin at best and play out mostly as an aspiring Director putting together a "Sizzle Reel" of "Jump Scares". Gonzalez can create an atmosphere and some of the jumps are good, but the jury is still out on whether he can put together a feature-length story. At least the film is a brisk 73 minutes.

The concept sounds great. Using a milk carton or missing person poster photo with person screaming is clever marketing for movie poster.

The Crazies Starz 4K
Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell. Directed by Breck Eisner. 2010
Something is infecting the citizens of Ogden Marsh with insanity. Now complete anarchy reigns as one by one the townsfolk succumb to an unknown toxin and turn sadistically violent.

Breck Eisner's "The Crazies" does what a good remake should in most cases do, -honor the original but take a different approach. I haven't watched it in a while, but I remember George Romero's "The Crazies"(1973) as one of his better "Non-'Dead'" films. It was low budget and "Indie" and rough around the edges, focused on character, and had Romero's usual very measured pace. Eisner takes "The Crazies" in a more Commercial direction. It's an intense Horror film with a recognizable cast, and an emphasis on shock cuts, jump scares and lots of gore, all emphasized by a booming score. It has a great look, too, very bucolic and sunny at the start, but turning eerie and greenish as darkness falls. I've always liked Timothy Olyphant and he's quite good as the town Sheriff; it's a very "Raylan Givens" role, and he'd be starting "Justified" about this same period. The first half of the movie is very effective and fast-moving, with legit jump scares and lots of creepy visuals. However, the second half gets a bit more repetitive and the jumps a little cheaper and less effective. Still, it's a good effort for the most part and the picture quality is excellent.

Showtime

2021

"Years after an unspeakable tragedy tore their lives apart, two sets of parents (Jason Isaacs and Martha Plimpton, Reed Birney and Ann Dowd) agree to talk privately in an attempt to move forward. In Fran Kranz' writing and directing debut, he thoughtfully examines their journey of grief, anger and acceptance by coming face-to-face with the ones who have been left behind."

The acting was so good and it did not feel like a movie but real life and it shows both sides the victims and the families who had kids who committed mass shootings.

Not the most pleasant subject but worth a watch.
