1993

"Tensions run high when a recently-divorced couple are given an offer they can't refuse. Once well-established movie songwriters, Lisa and Charlie are thrown together again when a movie producer offers them a rewarding contract to compose a new song. However, old wounds and new love interests guarantee that this job will be anything but easy money."

Now I know why I never heard of this.

I don't know what is worse the movie or Molly Ringwald trying to sing.

G20 Amazon Prime
Viola Davis, Antony Starr. Directed by Patricia Riggen. 2025
Terrorists take over the G20 summit with President Danielle Sutton, bringing her governing and military experience to defend her family, company, and the world.

Of course, it's ludicrous, -even more so when The President is choking out mercenaries twice her size, -but that doesn't mean it's not passably entertaining. Viola Davis brings her usual pissed-off gravitas to the role, and Antony Starr gets to be another over-the-top villain but this time with his New Zealander voice. The problem is that you've seen it all before, and "G20" looks more like a streaming drama than an actual movie. The only thing that really bugged me was Sutton's "precocious" teen-age daughter, who happens to be the story's inevitable computer whiz, while her brother is just typical dumbass kid.

2024

Showtime

"Stranded at an Arizona rest stop, a travelling knife salesman gets thrust into a high-stakes hostage situation by the arrival of two bank robbers who will stop at nothing to protect their ill-begotten fortune."

It was though did not reallty recognize anybody except one person in the cast.

2011

Starz Action

"A vicious bank robber (Stephen Dorff) steals a car occupied by a single mother {Maria Bello} and her five-year-old son, forcing the woman to drive him to meet his accomplice."

I am a sucker for Stephen Dorff and usually see anything he appears in.

2023

Peacock

Still pissed I have a Peacock premium subcription and they did not get all of the ads out of the way before the movie started and multiple ad breaks

It was not that bad though and maybe cheesy I don't think it had any major or recognizable stars.

2073 Decal Releasing Blu-Ray (also currently available on MAX)
Samantha Morton. Directed by Asif Kapadia. 2024
A time traveler who risks her life in the midst of a future Dystopia to change the course of history and save the future of humanity.

I came to "2073" looking for a SF story based on "Le Jetee" a French short that was later adapted into "12 Monkeys" by Terry Gilliam. What I got was more of a video essay, -a lecture on all the ills of humanity and a warning to take action. It's all incredibly grim and depressing. "2073" has an extremely low budget and relies primarily on a morose Samantha Morton to sell the theme with endless voice-over narration sandwiched between clips of current day conflicts and power struggles. I had an absolutely miserable time, thank you, but at least it's short.

Life Sony Pictures 4K
Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson. Directed by Daniel Espinosa. 2017
A team of scientists aboard the International Space Station discover a rapidly evolving life form that caused extinction on Mars and now threatens all life on Earth.

Overall, "Life" is a good, efficient little SF/Horror film with a terrific pace and good production design. I've got to say that this is one of those discs where the picture quality is so good that it elevates a "B" Movie to a definite "B+". The "wirework" effects used to achieve the illusion of astronauts in anti-gravity are top notch.

Crossing Delancey Criterion Blu-Ray
Amy Irving, Peter Riegert. Directed by Joan Micklin Silver. 1988
A Manhattan single meets a man through her Jewish grandmother's matchmaker.

I'm not a RomCom guy in most cases, but "Crossing Delancey" has always been warmly regarded, it's from Criterion, and it was free. It's generally a nicely made film with a distinct eye for character and a time and a place. I'm sure the fact that it's set around a bookstore, -and I was always a bookstore rat, -makes it seem Prehistoric. Even as an old man, I must say it's hard for me to sympathize with the way Amy Irving treats nice guy Peter Riegert until she makes up her damned mind. This is another Criterion disc where the color timing has been updated to a "Modern" look; it's very "teal". It's amusing to see the now very aged and silver-haired Amy Irving and Peter Riegert in the supplements. Both actors are owed an apology by the disc's cover artist.

Reign of Fire (2002) — Watchable I guess but a pretty lackluster fantasy-actioner that's more noteworthy for a cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale and Gerard Butler. Beyond that it's also a really ugly looking film void of pretty much any color. Not one I have any desire to revisit. **¾/***** (DVD)

Warfare A24
Will Poulter. Directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland. 2025
A platoon of Navy SEALs embark on a dangerous mission in Ramadi, Iraq, with the chaos and brotherhood of war retold through their memories of the event.

It's not often that I'm surprised by a movie, but I hadn't heard about "Warfare" until a week before it opened. The trailer really grabbed me by the collar and shook me. It's really a shame it hasn't gotten more attention, though the film may be too much for some audiences. It's the story of one particular incident in Iraq as remembered by those who fought there, told mostly in "real time", and it never feels less than authentic.
