The Postcard Killings (2020) — Generally I like these crime-dramas, which I is why I also watched CSI and Criminal Minds when they were on. However, this adaptation of the James Patterson/Liza Marklund novel has some editing problems and sloppy dialogue. There were a couple okay scenes that did surprise, otherwise it kind of plods along at a slow pace. If not for Jeffrey Dean Morgan, this would've been tough to sit through. **¾/*****

That is a interesting story about Dreyfuss

Connery and Gene Hackman have stayed retired for a long time.

Justin Long one of those "What Happened to that guy" stories and now you know why after watching this pile of turd.

Days of Thunder (1990) — I'm not much a fan of any kind of racing but found this to be a relatively entertaining sports-thriller which does feature some good NASCAR racing sequences and a nice cast, though can't really say anybody stood out, even Cruise. ***¼/*****

Just another run of the mill CGI animated movie with Will Smith.

You won't miss anything if you do not see this.

The Recruit (2003) — Second time seeing this one, the other was when it was released on DVD some time ago, and thought it was an okay espionage-thriller, though the ending was on the laughable side,
Spoiler:
primarily the monologue Pacino does when any CIA agent, bent or not, would've shut up ffs, lol.

Anyway, it was entertaining and actually if Disney (who I think owns the rights) wanted more adult-oriented content for Hulu, could make a series out of this, would be timely IMO. At this point, they could get Farrell to make a cameo... ***¼/*****

Devil's Due (2014)

Highly derivative of countless films within the Genre.

Basically a Found Footage version of Rosemary's Baby(1968) but 98% less compelling

The small bits of creative visual effects that pop up from time to time, kept me from turning this one off halfway through.

The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) — Some respectable prosthetic effects and fine work by Oliver Reed and Catherine Feller, but kind of plods along at times. but ultimately found it to be entertaining, especially the finale. ***½/*****

I own that on Blu-ray

I miss the says when Ferrell would be a lead in these type of movies

Forgettable and generic

The special effects were cheesy too with the slow motion

First time watching this in HD.

De Niro was barely in the movie.

How in the world did this lose the best picture Oscar to Dances with Wolves? -rolleyes-

Maybe the Academy back then had a lot of old farts who did not appreciate a true masterpiece right in front of their eyes.

Scoob! (2020

I really loved the updated Animation Style as well as many of throwbacks & cameos.

The film does feel a bit bloated and I wanted a lot more (direct) interactions between the gang.

Also, I get wanting to appeal to parents & children alike but the jokes either felt really dated or very on-point.

Not as egregious as Shakespeare in Love beating out Saving Private Ryan.

Or a movie like Heat not being nominated at all. For anything.

Shakespeare in Love was a really big head scratcher...from where I'm sitting, it was the worst movie out of all the Best Pic noms that year.

I think the Academy went into correction mode for Michael Mann by throwing him three major nominations for The Insider the year after Heat's shutout.

I had heard the speeches in this film, so I figured why not watch the darned thing?

George Hamilton plays the death-defying daredevil in this early '70s biopic. I've read conflicting accounts about Knievel's involvement in this movie, but it certainly comes off as something he'd approve.

The title character is never portrayed as anything less than the Great American Hero. He makes epic speeches, marries his high school sweetheart, and risks life and limb to entertain audiences.

Sure, he robbed local businesses during his youth, but no one was ever injured (so alleges Knievel) so it's OK that he did that, right? The robberies, his escaping arrest, and other questionable antics are treated as character quirks, not anything damning. The early '70s were definitely a different time.

You get the sense that Hamilton was an unabashed fan of Knievel. He plays the character with complete earnestness and wants to get across that Knievel is an almost mythic figure.

As someone who grew up seeing the Evel Knievel toy commercials but who knew nothing about his life, I thought this movie had on shades with rosy lenses. It comes off as tone deaf in 2020 even if the film portrays his law-breaking and other faults as things that make him interesting.

This movie was shot while the real Knievel was planning his jump across the Grand Canyon. Such a feat, regardless of its outcome, would be a once-in-a-lifetime event, so the film had to address it even though it would be released prior to the stunt. The way that it's handled is actually quite satisfying and is one of the better parts of the movie.

Like the man himself, this biopic is a bit of an odd duck. It's entertaining at times and has a lot of affection for its subject. Evel Knievel is passable, but I doubt many people are going to insist that it's essential viewing.

The Wretched (2019)

Enjoyed the mythos created within the film as well as the unknown cast, which were solid.

It's influences are clearly on it's sleeve, yet I wanted this film to be a bit more.

The Standoff at Sparrow Creek (2018)

The film is shot well but I lost interest in it's flat characters and repetitious interrogations after about 20-minutes.

Also in terms of logic within the script, since when are Police Funerals held at night?

Heat and Goodfellas both got the shaft and Saving Prviate Ryan too though I think Heat and Goodfellas are the bigger oscar mistakes.

It was on Netflix streaming

It had a Donnie Darko confusing multi-layer story vibe.

If you don't mind weird movies check it out though I have no clue what happened in the ending.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019)

The sequel to the 2017 is dumb and feels like DTV fodder on so many levels.

Even with so many things working against it, I found myself entertained at how hard the filmmakers worked to make this film more ridiculous than its predecessor. It can get pretty bonkers throughout.

Also, although it doesn't quite hit the levels of claustrophobia displayed in the The Descent (2005), the setting for the film is interesting and fairly effective.

Re: Last Movie You Watched Thread

Birds of Prey (2020) — Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was one of the few highlights of Suicide Squad but once this one was announced, I felt indifferent and the trailers didn't do much to change that to the point I skipped this in theaters. Watching it now, I came away shrugging my shoulders. Some of the action scenes, supervised by Chad Stahelski, were okay but the pacing was all off and the actual BIRDS OF PREY, were sidelined and don't really get any memorable moments. Similarly, Ewan McGregor was alright but a weak villain.

As a fan of the Batman comic book, outside of HQ, none of these resemble their counterparts, most notably Cassandra Cain who was a great character (trained as an assassin as a little girl by her father, David Cain, before being taken in by Bruce Wayne).

IDK, in the end this was a misfire and don't think it was the fault of an inexperienced director (using the same script, not sure anyone else would've made all that much better). Could be a case of being too much of a vanity project for Robbie. **¾/*****
