Speed (1994)

Whatever happened to Jan de Bont? Although based on a rather silly premisse and full of incongruities, its still rather effective as a no-brainer action film.
A swat cop gets on a city-bus rigged with explosives that will detonate if the vehicle goes below 50 mph. While they drive through the city he must remotely identify and find the bomber.

Open Hearts (2002)

Dogma 95 film by Oscar-winning Danish director Suzanne Bier. Not her best film and the dogma limitations of natural lights and no artefact do get on the nerves after a while but script is still solid. Very depressing but good if you're in the mood to see couples disintegrating for two hours! Not as good as some of Bergman's best though.
A young woman about to get married must deal with her fiance's car accident that has left him quadraplegic. The husband of the woman who hit him and rendered him handicapped works at the hospital where he's treated and will try and take care of the psychologically broken young woman. The inevitable ensues...

The Protector (2006)

I have a two-disk edition and just popped in the first disk thinking the other one was bonus features but it turned out I watched the short heavily edited theatrical version. It sometimes made no sense at all since they removed a lot of the dialogue scenes to cram in all the action scenes in 83 minutes. I remember going to the cinema in Morocco where they had double-bills of 2 1/2 hours, meaning they squeezed two films in 150 minutes! They were Hollywood action B-movies and at one point I couldn't understand anything, you had car chases with characters you didn't know, sex-scenes dropping out of nowhere (sod the foreplay!) and twists in the plot that made no sense since half of the previous infos and characters you had never seen! They basically gave the film to an editor (who probably didn't understand english!) and told him: "sex and violence sell, go away and edit that on this premisse".
Here, in this Thai film, the theatrical version is probably edited on these bases as well. The protagonist kills, maims, breaks, renders unconscious at least 500 guys (not kidding!) in a series of nonsensical non-stop combat scenes from Thailand to Australia looking for two elephants that were stolen. Yep!

<strong>Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning</strong> (2012)<br /><br />The generic (overall) plot and pacing are a bit of a slog to get through.<br /><br />Still, you can't completely botch an Action Film starring Scott Adkins, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren &amp; Andrei Arlovski. Their (combined) Action Scenes alone make this film worth sitting through.

Revenger (2018)

Even though some of the Action Sequences are enjoyable, there is nothing here that hasn't been done in other Korean Action Films, or Action Films in general.

Relies too heavily on Flashbacks and unlikable characters.

Hotel Inferno 2: The Cathedral of Pain (2017)

If you are familiar with Necrostorm, then you know what to expect from their overall output.

Picks up right where the 2013 film left off. Like its predecessor, the film is quite literally the combination of a German Splatter Film and First-Person Shooter Video Games.

Felt long even at 70-minutes.

Digging Up The Marrow (2015)

Generally fun Faux Documentary, even though Adam Green & Will Barratt are a bit rough to sit through at times.

The film is basically a Meta Approach to Nightbreed (1990).

Maybe because he only wrote 5 novels total or something like that. I will someday read Simulacron for sure but not while the movie is still fresh in my mind. I remember reading his first one where people live in darkness in caves and another called "Les seigneurs des sphères" in french but no idea in english.
If you like scifi you should try him, very well written and intelligent stories.

Thanks.
Unfortunately the local library doesn't carry anything by Galouye. May add Simulacron-3 the next time I need to top-up an Amazon order.
L’édition anglaise de "Seigneurs des sphères est apparemment "Lords of the Psychon".

Eyes Without a Face (1960)

Sometimes I find older B&W horror films like this one more chilling than more-recent colour films with loads of blood & special effects. A surgeon whose daughter is badly disfigured in an auto accident goes to extremes in an effort to restore her beauty.

When the film was shown at the 1960 Edinburgh Film Festival several audience members were reported to have fainted during one scene. Hearing this, director Georges Franju apparently commented “Now I know why Scotsmen wear skirts.”

The Dirty Dozen (1967)

A dozen misfit soldiers convicted of serious crimes are given the chance to train for a dangerous mission behind German lines. Given the film’s vintage, when I noticed the dozen included a token African-American character (played by NFL hall of famer Jim Brown) I immediately thought I knew which character would die first. I was wrong --- but only because Trini Lopez quit partway through filming and his character was killed off-screen during the parachute drop scene.

Donald Sutherland was apparently a struggling actor when this film was made. The scene in which his character pretends to be a General inspecting another officer’s troops helped him land the role of Hawkeye in MASH (1970), which made him an international star.

Natural City (2003)

Korean Sci-Fi film reminiscent of Blade Runner, but with less character development, more action scenes, and imo far less profound. In 2080 an elite squad of military police is responsible for destroying cyborgs who rebel from serving their masters. One of the MP’s has begun illegally harvesting AI chips from dead cyborgs in the hope of extending the short pre-determined “life” of his cyborg companion.

Monsieur Lahzar (2011)

An Algerian immigrant with a painful past is hired to replace a popular teacher who committed suicide in her Montréal elementary school classroom. Touching drama about life and loss that also includes a few lighter moments dealing with cultural differences and political correctness. Was very impressed by the natural performances of the many child actors, all of whom appeared very comfortable in front of the cameras.

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)

Even though the film took a few easy routes, the film was still an enjoyable end to the Trilogy.

Only saw the original with Arnie back in the day. But on a business trip I caught the end of this one after seeing another movie so I was curious to see the beginning. Can't compare this to other entries but this was a typical popcorn actioner. 2.5 - 3/5 Nothing spectacular,

A very interesting take on Dario Argento's classic.

I hated this. Extremely long, boring, dull, and stupid.

I want 2 & 1/2 hours of my life back.

Night Key (1937)

No matter the flaws, I always enjoy these charming 30s Universal horror/suspense with Karloff. Here, as in many of them, he plays the genius professor whose invention gets stolen by evil doers. In this case, a gang of thieves who kidnap his daughter to force them to work for them.

Guns of Navarone (1961)

Until recently I tohught it was based on a true story! Still, very nice and flowing script with nice sentiments and preformances. A few reflections about war and personal responsibilities. Niven's character was interesting.
A group of allies soldier must blow up a pair of huge guns set into a cavern high up into a rock clif on a greek island.

Not too impressive italian thriller by Michele Soavi (The Chruch, italian horror film)
An Italian who was a communist revolutionnary in Colombia goes back home and becomes a crook after he turns in all his friend to the police.

Scanner Cop 2 (1995)

AKA Scanners: The showdown.
Awful like the first one. Just a reson to try and make money out of the success of the cult (but flawed) David Cronenberg film. Acting is terrible, dialogues and plot all weak.
A scanner killer escapes from the loony bin and tries and kill a scanner cop who killed his brother years ago.

The usual evil-child horror with a little twist. Well done but not original.

Just watched this. Started out good and then just got ridiculous.

Backtrace (2019) — Maybe it's because I've seen so many Grindstone Entertainment productions that have so terrible, this one didn't fall to those levels of awfulness. That said, the story is pretty bland and acting ranging from lazy (Sylvester Stallone) to over-the-top (Matthew Modine) and has some poor direction and shoddy editing. I often wonder how some actors are roped in to these; for Stallone I assume he had a day or two in between filming some other Emmett/Furla/Oasis production, so he figured why not especially for what was probably a $1M paycheck. 2.25/5

Paddington 2 (2018)

Finally watched this and the 1st movie after reading how good these films are. Paddington 2 is currently in the rotation on HBO and watched it on HBO GO last night. A very nice feel good family movie. Leaves you with a smile on your face. These movies were never on my radar when they first came out, but now I'm glad I saw them.
