I watched a VHS tape tonight. I know, I know...

Time Runner (1992)

Hoo boy, did this one stink up the joint! Combining the worst traits of bad Terminator knock-offs and early ‘90s action movies, Time Runner has absolutely nothing going for it. It almost stretches credulity that it took six (!) writers to concoct this abomination. You know that when you’ve got Brion James playing the President you’re in for a rough ride. You also know that when Mark Hamill is the best thing about a film, you’re in deep, deep trouble. This dreck actually had a character say “Eat my shorts!” after shooting a guy…and if that wasn’t bad enough, the same character later kills an alien and says, “I guess your alien visa just got revoked.” Yup--it’s THAT bad. Avoid like an open manhole.

This got some good reviews on IMDB. Unfortunately it started off slow and all the characters had these thick English accents. I am hard of hearing in some instances and trying to decipher accents is a problem. One character isn't a big deal, everyone having the accent is tough. I'm still trying to figure out what the last guy said as the new guy is talking. Couldn't stick with it long enough to give an assessment

For a heist/conman movie this had surprisingly little suspense. A few twists and turns. Everyone raved about Margot Robbie, but to me I just see Jamie Pressly. Fun rental, won't revisit.

Ant Man - IMAX 3D (AMC Mercado Santa Clara).

The entire audience had a lot of fun with this film, and there was clapping at the end (and the first post credits stinger was also a treat...glad this was not spoiled for me beforehand). It's box office may be okay this weekend, but word of mouth should get this to 140-160m, not including international. So not a mega--hit, just a moderate hit that is a real crowd pleaser.

Danny Collins 3.5/5 - Good performances but clichéd and predictable as a mother fucker.

Really good time. Saw a 2D matinee today. Funny, good special FX and didn't take itself too seriously.

I'd give it a B+ A much lighter Marvel movie, but that was fine with me.

Rented the DVDs for both of these yesterday, but learned later in the night that both were on Netflix. Damn, Could have saved myself the $3 and trip to the video store.

Anyways, I liked Part 2 better than Part 1, but that was mostly because of Camilla Luddington. The 2 movies tie directly into each other, but I thought 2 was more suspenseful and better acted. Lotz was the lead in the 1st movie, but had a brief appearance in 2. She was great on Arrow, but not so great here.

The Pact - 4/5

A woman travels to attend the funeral of the mother she never got along with. After the disappearances of her sister and cousin in her mother's house, she realizes that there is a ghost haunting the premises. Good atmospheric slow burn horror/mystery that stands out by mostly avoiding typical formulaic scare tactics.

The Pact 2 - 1/5

A few weeks after the events of the first film, a woman who cleans up crime scenes starts to have visions of a serial killer and his victims. This film is the complete opposite of the first one. With a different writer & director, style and atmosphere are replaced with cheap clichéd scare tactics (ooh another jump scare) and a ridiculous plot that tries to tie it in to the first film. Another useless sequel to a good film. What a waste.

Hellraiser.

To this day, I've never seen the others and don't care too. This film was damn good. Love BD from Anchor Bay. I am interested to see that remake Barker was talking about though. To see wtf that could be.

I can see why Stallone wouldn't want Nielson in one of his movies, after a messy divorce, but Rothrock was a staple in 80's martial arts flicks. If you were into those movies you saw one of hers.

Prime Cut (1972)

It wasn't too shabby but Gene Hackman's name was "Mary Ann" in it?! WTF?? Is that the wussiest name for a mob boss in the history of cinema or what?

Lost Highway.

I sure have been missing out. It has the reputation of being incomprehensible, but I liked it even more than Mulholland Drive.

Some of the sequels aren't too bad, but yeah, none come remotely close to the original. A top 5 horror movie for me.

From what I remember, the second one is good. Anything after that sucks hairy scrotum.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus - 2.5/5

Spike Lee's more straightforward retelling of Bill Gunn's fascinating 70's surreal vampire cult classic Ganja & Hess. A mixed bag that while not as subversive as the original, contains some moments of brilliance and others that it could have done without.

The Words Bradley Cooper plays a writer to plagiarizes another's work and has trouble dealing with the complications from its success. Told as a story within a story with another story inside.

Carrie (2013) - 0.5/5

Another totally unnecessary remake. Half star for Julianne Moore's performance, the only good thing in this atrocious piece of garbage. "They're all going to laugh at you", that's what someone should have told the filmmakers behind this. I bet Brian De Palma would be laughing his ass off after watching this.
