Re: The One and Only Bruce Willis Thread
Like I said, he's iconic. Die Hard, 12 Monkeys, Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense, The Fifth Element, Armageddon and Sin City are iconic movies, but it's not his retirement, it's the reason for his retirement. That's pity not honor. Of course he's more important to American cinema than Peter O'Toole, but so is Kevin James.
I don't have anything against giving Bruce Willis an award, but an honorary Oscar at this moment would look like the Academy giving itself a pat on the back, rather than honoring an iconic actor, who might not even grasp what's going on.

Yes, there is no way this could be done without it being obvious that it is a reaction to his illness. So what?
When they gave an honorary Oscar to Harold Russell, was anybody under the illusion that it was not because he lost both hands in WW2?
When they gave one to Shirley Temple, was anybody pretending that it was not because she was a little kid?
When they gave Robert Alrman his honorary Oscar, wasn't it obvious that it was because he was really old? [He died the next year.]
The circumstances are such that this is the time to do it. He's not going to "grasp what's going on" any better in 2024 or later. So if there is going to be a moment to do it while he is still alive, this is it.
They could at least run the idea by him and his family. Maybe they will decline because his mental health is too poor. Let them decide. I guarantee that Tarantino would love to present it, and that speech is sure to be entertaining.
After Chris Reeve was paralyzed, he appeared at the Oscars. Demi Moore introduced him. He got standing ovation (no irony) and people were crying. No one was pretending that he was not there because he suffered a tragic accident. Did he feel pitied or loved?

He was old, but he was 80 not a 100 and if your honored for your body of work you're probably old. But I do get your point. Bruce Willis made a big impact in the world of movies and if you want to honor him during his lifetime 2023 is better than any other year. He had an impressive career, but I still think an award for your career fits better for people who are 80.
Most people who would be deserving of such an honor keep working into their 70s and beyond. Gene Hackman made his last movie at age 74, but did not announce his retirement until he was 84.
I get what you are saying about how it looks, but would LeBron James turn down meeting a Make-A-Wish kid because it was about pity for a dying child?

Movie icons and Pulp Fiction costars Bruce Willis and John Travolta face off in this action-packed thriller. When bounty hunter Ian Swan (Willis) is shot and presumed dead after disappearing in Maui waters, Swan's son, Ryan (Blake Jenner), his ex-partner (Stephen Dorff), and a local detective (Praya Lundberg) set out to find his killers. After being threatened by a ruthless power broker (Travolta), it appears Ryan and his team are out of options — until an excursion to the closely guarded island community of Paradise City unites them with an unforeseen ally.

That makes me sad. I keep hoping that Travolta can find one more big movie to be a part of.

Interesting to see both of these guys in a movie that isn’t from the Emmett/Furla assembly line, and actually has a director with some studio hits under his belt, even if they were all 20+ years ago. They even ‘slam’ Chuck Russell’s name a couple of times in the credits of this trailer. I’m curious to know how his career kinda flatlined after the turn of the century. I mean, his most recent gig was directing an Indian movie!

Looks like Willis will officially run out of content by early 2023.

From the trailer, it looks like Willis is at least in a scene with other people, so that's a change from the last movie or two I watched with him. Agreed that it would be nice if Travolta was in something big again.

I happened to be looking at Fandango today and was surprised to discover that Paradise City with Travolta and Willis is actually playing in a theater here in Los Angeles.
It's playing at a small Indie theater in North Hollywood with multiple showtimes. I have to assume those showings were empty or next to empty.
and it has a whopping 11%

I had a free Red Box rental and got Detective Knight: Rogue and watched it this weekend. It's actually part of a trilogy. The 2nd movie is already out and the 3rd is coming in January.
For a guy who is actually the title character and actually gets top billing, Bruce Willis is relegated to being a supporting character. He's probably in about 30% of the movie at best. His dialogue is very limited and some of it is so blatantly ADR'd. The movie really follows the perspective of the criminals for most of it. The action and shootout scenes are very poorly directed.
Bottom line, it's very cheap looking and falls pretty much in line with most of his recent output. It's suppose to take place in Los Angeles and NY, but it's actually filmed in Vancouver and you can tell.

The final chapter of the Detective Knight trilogy coming January 20th. I'm still waiting for the disc to part 2 to hit Red Box.
Bruce Willis stars as Detective James Knight in this final, tense chapter of the trilogy. Knight’s last-minute assignment to the Independence Day shift turns into a race to stop an unbalanced ambulance EMT from imperiling the city’s festivities. The misguided vigilante, playing cop with a stolen gun and uniform, has a bank vault full of reasons to put on his own fireworks show...one that will strike dangerously close to Knight’s home.
It's the next to last movie in Bruce Willis' career. He has 1 more coming out in March.
Apparently Willis filmed the entire trilogy last Fall from October to December 2021.

Willis has supposedly licensed his face and voice for future work after he's gone. He could become one of Hollywood's first synthetic actors.

too bad if not.
I'd love it.
But not sure how anyone would really agree to such a thing. Especially an A lister unless there is a provision that their estate gets to agree on the project.

Imagine new Ghostbusters movies with the original cast deepfaked at an appropriate age, set in the 1980s/1990s. More Indiana Jones movies with a deepfaked Harrison Ford. Batman 3 with Michael Keaton and Billy Dee Williams. New Star Trek episodes and movies with the original cast.
The actors wouldn't even need to be deceased; they could just license out their likeness for an easy paycheck without needing to do any work. And I doubt that someone's estate (kids, grandkids, great-grandkids) would have any compunction about cashing on their grandparents likenesses. It's basically free money for them.
The only stumbling block is that I don't think the technology to pull it off has matured, and by the time it does, I don't know if there would be enough interest in, say, ten-twenty-thirty years to revisit all of these old franchises. The original audience that grew up with them will start to age out and die off, and there's no guarantee that their kids and grandkids would be interested in such projects.
Would, say, a James Bond movie with a deepfaked Sean Connery set in the early 1960s be a draw to modern audiences? Or would the appeal be limited to only those
