Peanuts (2015) S: Snoopy, et al

Twentieth Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios have acquired rights to make a feature film based on the late Charles Schulz’s beloved and iconic “Peanuts” franchise. The agreement is the culmination of over two years of discussions – focused on the film’s creative direction – between the Studio and members of the Schulz family. The announcement was made today by Vanessa Morrison, president of Twentieth Century Fox Animation.

The as yet untitled animated event will be released on November 25, 2015. 2015 will mark the 65th anniversary of the debut of the “Peanuts” comic strip and the 50th anniversary of the landmark television special, “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Charles Schulz drew the most popular and influential comic strip of all time, which was read everyday by 355 million people in 75 countries. In addition to the famous strip, Peanuts holiday television specials such as “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” have won Emmy’s and continue to be among the highest rated prime time TV specials.

Steve Martino will direct the “Peanuts” feature; previously, he brought to the big screen (with Jimmy Hayward) Fox/Blue Sky’s “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!” Martino also directed (with Michael Thurmeier) Fox’s recent box-office smash “Ice Age: Continental Drift.” The screenplay is by Craig Schulz and the writing team of Bryan Schulz & Cornelius Uliano. Craig Schulz and Bryan Schulz, respectively Mr. Schulz’s son and grandson, along with Uliano are producing.

Also playing a key role in the deal was Neil Cole, chief executive officer and president of Iconix Brand Group, which, in a joint venture with Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, formed Peanuts Worldwide in 2010, the home to the global “Peanuts” property.

Twentieth Century Fox Animation director of development Ralph Millero worked closely with Morrison and with the Schulz estate in securing the rights to the property.

Commented Vanessa Morrison:

“We are thrilled to partner with the Schulz family and Iconix and honored to bring the Peanuts characters to the big screen. This all started with our love and respect for the work of Charles Schulz. We thank the Schulz family and Iconix for letting Fox and Blue Sky bring his vision to new generations of film goers.”

Craig Schulz, President, Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, commented:

“We have been working on this project for years. We finally felt the time was right and the technology is where we need it to be to create this film. I am thrilled we will be partnering with Blue Sky/Fox to create a Peanuts movie that is true to the strip and will continue the legacy in honor of my father.”

Neil Cole, CEO, Iconix Brand Group said:

“This is a momentous step for the Peanuts brand. The beloved characters, Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the whole gang resonate with multiple generations all over the world. This film will give us a new medium in which to engage consumers globally and showcase the power of the Peanuts brand.”

We'll see how this turns out, but I'm very skeptical about it. I don't think Peanuts is a property that would transition to CG well at all. When they talk about "the technology" they felt they needed, it sounds like they don't mean traditional hand-drawn animation.

Although, I suppose it could be worse: it could be live-action/CG.

No Rod McKuen songs, no sale.

While I love Peanuts (check the username), if the movie in any way resembles the "rapping Charlie Brown" promos that ABC has used in recent years, I'll just sit this one out.

I envision a trailer like The Smurfs.

I know I'm old, but Peanuts hasn't been handled well since Race for Your Life. Whether it be the sloppily handled DVD releases or the writing of the specials, it's just not the show I grew up with. It's become nothing more than a series of loosely-connected vignettes of the strip.

I always loved the Peanuts gang but I really don't know that I want to see this unless it's done in traditional hand drawn animation and not some CG animated crap. I somehow doubt that will be the case though.

Ditto. For some reason he seems like the natural choice if they ever do a live-action version. I think if they did it would be best to maybe just adapt the Christmas special. I'm not too keen on what they have in the works, especially with the whole rapping Charlie Brown stuff.

I agree. The last Winnie the Pooh film was a great throw back to the Disney traditional 2D cel animation - too bad not a lot of people saw it in the theater.

Meh, with the exception of A Charlie Brown Christmas I've never been a big fan of Peanuts.

Though the idea of having Wes Anderson involved would interest me.

Coen Brothers would be perfect to work on this

This needs some Peppermint Patty and Marcie action!

did you see "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead" ? the allusion to their relationship is hysterical.

By technology, they probably want live action & CGI Snoopy & Woodstock. They need to go all out and get Angelina Jolie for the teacher just so she can sound like "Waa Waa Waa"

All right guys ... cast it live-action style.

I've got Katie Perry as Lucy.

I think they have enough sense not to make it live action. But even if they did, why would Katy Perry work? They'd have to cast children, wouldn't they?

At least if they keep it animated, they could have known adult actors doing the child voices. Because, you know, the adults don't have much to say in their world but "wah wah wah wah wah wah."

I think the Peanuts gang would look awesome in the kind of Pixar animation from the movie "UP".

If it's 2D, I'm there opening weekend. If it's 3D, it will be a rental at best.

I haven't seen those, thank goodness. Don't forget the poo-poo and pee-pee and wee-wee jokes that usually find their way in, or Snoopy vs. Woodstock in a farting contest.

I have always felt like something mentioned above would be a good way to do a Peanuts movie. Make them adults, but only truly reveal that it's them towards the end and have their mannerisms be reflective of the characters.

FWIW, if they did a live action version, I think the only CG effect should be Snoopy. I also think that if they did all of the dialogue and him acting out the different roles, they should get Johnny Depp to do the motion capture and acting, kind of like they did in Rango.

I never understood the appeal of Peanuts. I know it's a beloved property but I've never enjoyed it. I'm glad I know enough of it to get the parodies, but that's it.

I would never say it was them outright, but I would have the last scene of the movie be Charlie Brown character running to kick a football and then the Lucy one pulls it away. No words would be spoken, but Lucy could just stand over the grown Charlie, smile and wink, then go away.
