Oh hey it's Cheech in the background too.

That table is just missing Milius and Carpenter for the fullblown 70s revival. Also Leone should be standing in back of them as the the "cinematic father" of this family.

Infinitely watchable because it's so bad. One of the worst Cuban accents in cinema. The people who idolize Montana or think this is an actual great film are morons. Original is 100X better.

DISAGREED.
Who gives a fuck about accuracy with Cuban accents, good enough, just like Wallach's Mexican accent in GBU was good enough. It's cinema not documentary.

The latin cocaine scene is more interesting than the american prohibition scene.

Scarface is a fun movie that I still pop in whenever I want something on that doesn't require much thought and I've got a good alcohol buzz. Kind of the same way it worked in college.

Bottomline: it's a guy movie classic, but nothing else IMO.

That's more a thing with the original that sort of carried over to the remake. In the original, Tony's mother flat out states that Tony is in love with his sister. In the remake, it was changed to an overprotective big brother.

You don't have to kiss someone or grab their ass to have desire for a person. You can look at them from a distance with binoculars and smear your semen on a Polaroid of them. Tony definitely wanted to bang his sister. It's part of the reason he's so fucking angry. And it's why he shot Manny. He got to do what he's always desired to. But I think you secretly know this.

P.S.-Now that you know that there are other ways to express desire, please stop kissing/grabbing my ass.

I pretty much despise this movie, mainly because of the group it gets the majority of its love from. Rappers, thugs and just about every other ass clown seem to think this is God's gift to cinema. I think its mediocre Pacino...at best.

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

When I was in high school Scarface was my number one sought after movie on DVD. It was OOP and commanding extremely high prices online.

I loved the movie when I was younger. The hip-hop audience who embraced it for the wrong reasons always bugged me. Today I still like the movie but it doesn't mean as much to me as it used to.

Speaking of, I don't have a copy of this on DVD and every now and again I'd like to pop it in. That Platinum Edition that came out a few years ago has a remixed soundtrack which doesn't make me happy at all. Does that edition, which is the only one that I think is still in print, contain the original audio track or is it just the remixed shit?

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

I originally saw the film during my high school days and thought it was one of the greatest films ever.

Today I still appreciate the visual flair, musical score, and the overall design. However, rewatching it, combined with taking into consideration the effect it had on younger viewers as well as immature adults, I now despise the film.

Oliver Stone and DePalma maybe were trying to show how the criminal life ruins everything it touches. Tony's friend Angel is tortured to death because of Tony's desire to make fast money. Tony's sister becomes a drug addict and a slut after he gives her money and tells her to quit her job. And in the end he's not even happy with all the money because everyone hates him, and in the end he's all alone to be murdered by people looking to come up, just like he was.

However, this is not the message some people got from the film. Tony Montana is the films protagonist so there are efforts to make him likeable or atleast sympathetic as well as someone willing to make money by any means necessary. Take a look at the people he's shown to murder:

*A communist who is said to have tortured people while in Cuba
*A drug dealer who tried to rip them off and who also murdered his friend Angel
*A corrupt cop who's on the drug dealers payroll
*Assassins trying to kill him
*His former boss who tried to have him killed
*And Sosa's henchmen who was about to kill children

They don't see his character flaws as having to do with him being a criminal, but in him getting addicted to his own product and becoming overly paranoid.
Also look at the irresponsible Def Jam documentary that accompanies the Two-Disc DVD edition.

I still like Carlito's Way. Pacino's characters is still the macho anti-hero stereotype but the message was more clear, especially when Carlito's nephew is killed. "You said these were your friends but there ain't no friends in this shit business."

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

I love the movie. It was part of my youth. You see My parents were born in Cuba and came over in 1960 when they were like 8 years old. I was born in 74 and have lived my whole life in Miami. There hasn't been another movie that has captured the look and lifestyle of Miami in any other movie as well as it was in Scarface.

Fell in love with it in high school, during my mafia movie phase. When I got to college, I realized just how big it was. Seemed like everyone had a Scarface poster in their dorm. Now its still one of my favorites of the genre, along with Casino.

I ain't no coconut. Trust me. But seriously, why would anyone see the douchebags on that ad/poster and think yeah, that might be a cool party to go to? The ad alone stinks of AXE body spray, cocoa butter, cheap cologne and shit.

Not my type of party either, according to the add, they are the DJs. A shared love of music can bring two men close..

I'm a DJ. I wouldn't share a floor with any one of these poseurs.

I wonder if Scarface is the shark jump career moment when Al Pacino became an over-the-top cheesy actor. Before then, he was great in almost everything I can think of. But sometime in the early '80s, he changed and has been a cheesy actor in almost every role since then. Did it start with Scarface in 1983, or was there a cheesy performance before that one?

I think the over the top started with Scent of a Woman.
