I saw "Vol. I" three times in a theater and once as the complete 4 hour film. That sequence was always in the 1.85 aspect ratio.

Thank you for all the info ReduxGuy!
Skipping the R1 release is going to be tough, seeing as it's been reported to be at Best Buy this coming week for either $14.99 (or $17.99) for the two volume set.

Has anyone heard any word on when the so-called "director's cut" is going to be released?

Criterion spoiled me with Antichrist. I just want everything LVT from them now. This film would have been perfect for CC.

I wouldn't mind them releasing both edits in a "Fanny and Alexander" type box set.

So, is it conclusive that the US BD has an authoring problem?
The Canadian BD is likely the same (distributed by Mongol Media instead of Magnolia, but discs are usually identical except for packaging), but I'm hesitant to pick it up if there's a problem with it.

Last time they had a fuck up for me was Let The Right One In. What was their last literal fuck up?

I got the DVD at that time. I did end up getting the fixed DVD.
Dunno why I didn't get the US BD of it. I got the UK BD at some point. Solid BD.

Looks like the blu ray is coming out on 7/8. You can buy Vol 1 & 2 separate or as a bundle. Right now Amazon has the bundle pretty cheap ($28). Not sure if it's uncut or not.

Yeah, I noticed that when I watched it. I didn't notice that the audio was different, but the AR was definitely not what you said it was theatrically.
As for the film, I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. My complaints match some of the stuff mentioned by others here. Knowing now that the director had nothing to do with this cut, it makes sense. I will revisit it when the DC is released. That said, I found the stuff with Christian Slater to be devastating up until... well... the trickle. The Uma Thurman chapter was heartbreaking, too.

Lots of directors now a days release more than one version of a film. Just because one version is called "the director's cut" it doesn't mean the other version was put together with zero director oversight or input.
From everything I've read, it seems that LvT was planing to have two version for quite some time.
And while he may not be a major Hollywood filmmaker, I would think that Trier has enough clout in his own world that he can make his films exactly as he likes.

It was stated elsewhere, but Von Trier approved the two-part version without even seeing it himself. That's what I meant by him having "nothing to do with this cut."
edit: from exclaim.ca, "There is a disclaimer at the very onset of Nymphomaniac, Lars von Trier's controversial four-hour epic about one woman's sexual affliction, that states quite cheekily that von Trier approved this cut of the film, which was originally over five hours long, but was not involved in its construction."
edit2: I guess that quote doesn't explicitly say he didn't SEE it, just that he didn't construct it. Either way. I get your point, and agree in most cases, but I'm not sure that applies to this title.

So the 5.5 hour director's cut is confirmed now.
