Fourth of July Week(end) 2012 Box Office Extravaganza Thread

Rather than having numerous box office threads this week as The Amazing Spider-Man opens on Tuesday and Katy Perry's Covered Tits in 3D opens on Thursday, I decided to name the thread appropriately.

FRIDAY 7 AM: R-rated raunch ruled overnight at the domestic box office. Universal‘s reprobate teddy bear comedy Ted debuted with a stunningly strong $2.625M from midnight showings at 1,090 theaters. TV’s Seth MacFarlane has now made the successful transition to the big screen. Better yet, the studio’s acquisition from MRC had a budget of only $50M. And Warner Bros‘ male beefcake strippers Magic Mike directed by Steven Soderbergh took in a huge $2.050M from just one show at midnight in 1,100 locations. Chalk up another hit for new star Channing Tatum but with a twist because he and Soderbergh funded the film themselves since Magic Mike is partially based on the actor’s experiences as a Florida stripper when he was 19. And this was a low-cost acquisition of domestic rights for the studio as well. ”Off to a great start!” a WB exec gushed this morning. Both pics are receiving decent reviews and major pre-sales going into this weekend that kicks off Fourth Of July week. (Rarely has there been a Friday when I’ve wanted to see two opening major studio pics like these.) On Fandango, the big online movie tickets seller, Magic Mike was #1 going into today, representing 61% of Fandango sales and outpacing Bridesmaids and Mamma Mia! at the same point in the sales cycle. Ted repped 11% of sales.

Also debuting today are Lionsgate’s PG-13 Madea’s Witness Protection from producer/director/star Tyler Perry as his stereotypical cross-dressing alter ego. And DreamWorks’ PG-13 dramedy People Like Us which distributor Disney always knew was a small movie unlikely to get traction beyond single digits.

While it's undecided if Brave still holds the number one spot this weekend, I believe Magic Mike and Ted will have legs over the course of the next few weeks.

I can see Madea’s Witness Protection being DOA and Disney/DreamWorks were idiots to release People Like Us on this weekend.

Never underestimate the stupidity of women.

I never in a million years thought "Magic Mike" would do well.

I'm a huge Soderbergh fan, and I will see this eventually - just not in a theater!

Well I'll likely see this considering the reviews that are coming out for it are more in the positive. Others here as well. I don't care what the subject matter is, for the most part, I just want it to be good..also it's Soderbergh so that gets my interest more easily.

Why can't there be any famous actresses who were former strippers that go on to make a movie about their experience?

I dunno, but let's hope Diablo Cody keeps her story under wraps.

So you're saying women are stupid for wanting to see Magic Mike?

I know some famous actresses who started by stripping. In porn.

Magic Mike is currently rated at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, the same as The Amazing Spider-Man. And that thread turned out great.

You never thought a film full of buff, shirtless, hot actors would score a hit with women?

Counterprogramming for women, with the right brand and/or marketing, has consistently proven to do well over the Summer when action is in full swing.

...unless Ebert says its good, since you agree with him 100% of the time.

For the record, I'm still deciding if I should see Magic Mike, as I have quite a bit to do over the weekend; may have to wait until next week. Based on some of the reactions in the movie's thread, I run the risk of seeing the movie and emerging from the theater a flaming homosexual, but I'll take my chances.

Plus, it's shot by Peter Andrews, one of my favorite cinematographers working today. Love his work, but I don't know why he doesn't try to work with other directors aside from Soderbergh.

Clearly I once again underestimated just how retarded hormones make people. A shame this will in all likelyhood do better than Soderbergh's good movies.

And that's the last I'll say on this subject, as I refuse to be pulled into a debate about a movie this brain dead. It ranks lowed than even Battleshit on the scale of movies I give a crap about.

You don't fuck much, do you?

Soderbergh is an uneven director; he should be happy with any hits he gets regardless of merit. Although, I'm hearing MM is actually good, so, hey, go figure. I still think Battleshit looks worse.

Guys, it's gonna be on tonight at your nearest theater-restaurant-bar-club adjacent to your nearest theater. Women will be primed and ready to go afterwards. Go forth and wreak havoc.

So all people who fuck are neanderthals who drop everything to go see movies like Magic Mike or I dunno, Tomb Raider at the drop of a hat? Is that really the point you want to be making here?

I'm just sayin', if you want to make some random ad hominem attack you could do much better.

Every time I make a joke post, I say to myself "I don't need to insert a smiley; the posters are smart enough to recognize humor when they read it." And then said posters prove me wrong 9 out of 10 times.

EDIT: :(

You can't be this dense. Why do you think movies with hot, naked and/or nearly naked chicks do well with male audiences? Guys like to watch hot naked chicks in the movies. Believe it or not, but women aren't just sexless robots. They get horny too. It's a female version of a T and A movie...I don't know what that would be called, but it's a movie that has a bunch of extremely good looking, nearly naked men. What's wrong with women wanting to see that? If you have a problem with that, then I assume you have a problem with every movie that has gratuitious female nudity. Actually it's different since apparently this movie is actually good. I have no interest in it, but it certainly doesn't surprise me, nor should it surprise any halfway intelligent person that women would be all over this movie.

love it when women call us pigs for seeing sleazy t&a movies but when something like Magic Mike comes out, they're all on it

Thanks for...proving my point? I don't even know what post you were replying to or why you bothered to (mistakenly?) quote my reply, as I referenced everything you just said far more succinctly.

Perhaps my reference to Tomb Raider instead of outright saying Showgirls went over your head.

Well, whoopdido nailed it more or less. Either you're so dense you can't grasp the point I'm making, or you really are just some angry shut-in who won't be getting some run-off pussy from Magic Mike screenings.

Same to you, apparently, but without the random personal attack.
