Yeah, i'm willing to say Joe would've been #1.

I had no idea MM was Soderbergh  Makes me respect it more though I'm still not going to see it. :)

My daughter and her friends have bought advance tickets to MAGIC MIKE and are meeting for drinks first. It's going to be a drunken girls' night out. No boyfriends allowed. (And no fathers either--thankfully!)

Can't think of any other pictures like Magic Mike that women have gone to in droves and turned into successes. Can anyone else? Movies salivating over semi-nude bodies seems to be confined to male nerds for the most part. And porn.

Hollywood love to copy success, so that seems almost certain. However I think DragonTattoo was right when he identified this film as something of a new phenomena earlier in the thread.

When I saw Ted last night, i saw more women at the theater than ever. Its like an event movie for them, like Sex & the City. Best overheard comment from a middle aged woman "I may get pregnant tonight"

I think Channing Tatum is officially a movie star, three $100 million movie's in one year, none of which were tentpoles. Pretty impressive.

No thinking needed there; he's in.
Although, I now shudder at the thought of a newly-shot striptease from Duke finding it's way into G.I. Joe 2... in 3-D! |

So women are showing up in droves to see Magic Mike, yet it would still fail the bechdel test. I just think thats funny.

Didn't Vin Diesel and Alicia Silverstone start out big too after a few movies?
Alicia Silverstone had a lot of press but never the boxoffice hits to back it up. Cluess did good, but it only grossed $56 mil. The only $100 mil movie she has is Batman and Robin. |

Haven't seen them all but outside of Brave and the Avengers that is a pathetic looking top 10 list of movies.

Good to see two original films over performing. Gee, maybe we should see more of those... |

Looking at his filmography he's reminding me of early Brad Pitt. It's going to take a 12 Monkeys to win over male audiences and rise above eye candy status. |
Re: Fourth of July Week(end) 2012 Box Office Extravaganza Thread
Magic Mike is his 12 Monkeys.

I read that Fox had originally passed on "Ted". I guess Tom Rothman feels pretty good today since "Ted" opened to $54 million.
