Re: Prometheus aka Прометей (Scott, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
Saw it this weekend. I was really looking forward to this and knew it probably wouldn't meet my expectations. My review can be best summed up by the metaphor I used to describe the experience to my wife the next day:
Seeing this movie feels like I had sex with an incredibly hot super model, who is also incredibly dumb. During the experience and right after it, I was super excited and happy. Then as time went on, I started remembering the stupid shit she said during intercourse, like 2+2= 5!, and evolution is just a theory!, etc. Then I just became angry. All in all, it was fun and I was entertained, so I can't complain too much...but damn, some of those scenes and characters were stupid... |
Re: Prometheus aka Прометей (Scott, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
I can say with absolute certainty that I did not feel like I was having sex with a supermodel, dumb or otherwise, while watching this movie. But congrats!

I liked it. Some of the characters didn't show a whole lot of intelligence for people who were supposedly very smart, but I thought on the whole the movie is really pretty good. I'm glad I went to see it, and I'd like to see the sequel.

On a side note, the growth of the squid-like alien is impossible, not just because of its speed. An organism must consume nutrients in order to grow. Matter doesn't just form out of thin air. An organism must obviously take in at least a kilogram of matter for every kilogram that it gains in mass. In reality, an organism must consume much more, of course. Growth requires energy. So what'd this thing eat? Even if there were a few tons of human food laying around, what is the likelihood that an alien would be able digest it? This is a problem that goes all the way back to the original Alien. The chest-burster grows to 7 feet tall in like a day. How? Magic, apparently. |

For Supermallet-
I re-watched AR last night and I have to say. You are SO FAR off base in claiming Prometheus is inferior to Alien Resurrection. It was pretty abysmal. And talk about people making stupid decisions! AR was chock full of them. There is a laundry list of problematic scenes in it, and above all else it was laughably stupid and not very entertaining. I hadn't seen it in at least 12 years and there was a reason for it. I just wanted to confirm my thoughts. As someone else mentioned earlier, I'm sure down the road you will be scratching your head wondering why you said that. |
Re: Prometheus aka Прометей (Scott, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
Doubt it. It's not the first unpopular opinion I've ever held. I stand by it, and everything else I said in this thread.

Re: Prometheus aka Прометей (Scott, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
I have a question that I don't think anyone brought up yet, and fuck spoilers, what was up with Weyland being Charlize's father? I took it that the old man was like 150 years old. But for reality sake lets say he was 70-80... just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have a daughter so young. Was she calling him father in the same way that David was? Meaning she was an android?

Re: Prometheus aka Прометей (Scott, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
FWIW, I'll live if they don't make another one in this series. This one didn't really leave me with any burning questions. IMO, a good sci-fi movie should just sit for a while and let people draw their own conclusions.
If they REALLY feel the need to answer questions, then I recommend doing one that involves the Jockeys, Aliens, and Predators in a kind of triple threat match. Furthermore, have Ripley meet up with Shaw and David somewhere in the mix and close the lid on this whole debacle. |

The speculation is she's an android like David or more advanced. |

FWIW, it would be cool if there's a scene in the DC where David mentions something about unicorns to Vickers, seeing as he can read dreams. ;) |

Okay, a possible 147 minute longer cut will be included on the Blu-ray, which releases October 9th.
http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/241...s-30-mins-more With "Prometheus" sparking endless debate this weekend, one thing for sure is that a lot of elements of the film have confused people. Some of them are Scott's deliberate attempts to be ambiguous and enigmatic, but others seem to be the result of some overly judicious editing. The latter problem will be resolved to some extent with the upcoming DVD & Blu-ray editions scheduled to hit October 9th. Scott tells Collider that the home release of "Prometheus" will have up to half-an-hour of deleted scenes. A lot of those will be included in a longer cut on the disc that lasts an additional twenty minutes, one which sounds much close to the original 147 minute first cut of the film he did. However he says the theatrical version is "fundamentally the director’s cut… I’m so happy with this engine, the way it is right now. I think it’s fine. I think it works." He is however aware of film lovers and fans with their desire to see as much as possible, even though in this case he prefers the theatrical take - "there will be half an hour of stuff on the menu because people are so into films… if you really want to tap in, look at the menu. To see how things are long, and it’s too long. Dramatically, I’m about putting bums on seats. For me to separate my idea of commerce from art—I’d be a fool. You can’t do that. I wouldn’t be allowed to do the films I do. So I’m very user friendly as far as the studios are concerned. To a certain extent, I’m a businessman. I’m aware that’s what I have to do. It’s my job. To say, “Screw the audience.” You can’t do that. “Am I communicating?” is the question. Am I communicating? Because if I’m not, I need to address it." Meanwhile the viral video campaign for the film is not yet over. The film's end credits have revealed a new website and a brief new video which again features Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland character. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/GDanyJA5aRU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Adult Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce looking awesome) dÍd a TED conference in 2023, which there is a pretty cool video of. The movie ends in 2093, we're introduced to Shaw and Holloway in 2089. Soooooo....he's pretty fucking old. Theron is 36. Sooooo yeah....it's weird but...maybe not sio much cuz some guys father children when they're fucking old.

Fair enough. I'll wait for the fan-edit that does just that. :) |

Re: Prometheus aka Прометей (Scott, 2012) — The Reviews Thread
I've been thinking about how I felt about this movie since I saw it yesterday morning, so apologies in advance for the length of this.
I appreciate the fact that this movie leaves you asking questions, but at the same time, I'm not so sure how many of the unanswered questions are intentional. First, I think this movie really suffered by being marketed and released as a summer flick. This movie feels like it wants to be on the level of Blade Runner and 2001 as a somewhat deep film that happens to take place in a sci-fi setting. Yet, it also feels like it has to live up to the expectations of a "summer blockbuster" and the expectations of the past Alien movies. Alien was basically a horror film, Aliens an action movie, Prometheus doesn't know what it is. The best parts were the scenes of discovery and almost all of the action/horror scenes felt tacked on and pretty pointless. What really was the point of the geologist coming back to kill people? It seemed like someone felt the audience needed some action. Why show Charlize's character racing to narrowly escape the ship, only to be crushed moments later? Again, we need some action. I agree mostly with Supermallet on this one. I enjoyed watching it, but this was one hell of a disjointed movie with no identity. It really felt like it needed another hour to achieve what it seems to wanted to do. There was just zero investment in the characters besides David and Shaw(not that I really bought into her character, but at least they gave her screen time). Charlize Theron's character did absolutely nothing besides roast a guy. Her character added nothing. You keep waiting for a payoff to everything they show us about her, but all she does is provide the voice of the skeptic hard-ass nascar driver with the inability to turn right. The captain also was so underdeveloped. Any attachment we have to him is most likely due to the audience already liking Idris from his previous roles. He has a few scenes where Idris's charisma carries everything, and then he pulls a Randy Quaid and sacrifices himself. The rest of the crew was just laughable, there only to provide what someone thought was a necessary body count. You have the geologist who feels like he came from a mad max movie and the biologist who sees a strange alien dildo rise out of some havoline and turns into a preteen girl with a hello kitty doll. The rest of the crew might as well have been cardboard cutouts with targets on their head. God this movie just really reinforces how much this industry misses Stan Winston. Every fucking movie with a alien in it since he has died has been the same stupid ass squid monster. I also dont understand what the true point of the black goo was. Does it kill people, or does it turn them into super powered mutants like it did the geologist? Manufacturing xenomorph killing machines makes since if your intent is to wipe out the human race. Turning humans into super powered zombies that could make the race you are trying to destroy more dangerous doesnt really make sense with the whole "Space Jockey's have decided to wipe us all out story." I actually was entertained by it, but the potential of what could have been is what makes my disappointment so great. I could really get behind the idea of having another set of stories that take place in the Alien universe, but doesnt directly tie in with the other movies. It's a shame that someone felt the need to throw these moments to seemingly tie this movie with the previous ones. All it did was add to the confusion and take away from what could have been a great flick. |

I figured she was either an android or Weyland's daughter. Yes, composition-wise they would always frame her with the best posture, like when she confronts David and she's standing there all robot-like in the hallway. Sometimes things really don't go anywhere like we want them to. |
