A.O. Scott gives it a good review in today's New York Times:

I saw it last night in 3D at a sneak preview. It was great fun, I grinned from ear to ear through most of it. Brolin NAILED Tommy Lee, and Griffin was the best new character in the movie. Also thought the bad guy, Boris, was pretty amusing.
I give it a solid B+ |

Men in Black 3 is a movie made by 8-year olds, for 8-year olds. If you go in with that kind of mindset, it can be fun. It's a silly cartoon, nothing makes sense, and occasionally the jokes are funny.
Things I really liked: - Josh Brolin takes the role extremely seriously and knocks it out of the part. Spoiler:
- The film is mercifully short.
I'd recommend it. But keep in mind my opening line. |

Saw it in 2D. Seemed to have a lot of made-for-3D shots (not in a good way).

Can someone spoilerize the final scene I keep hearing about ?

it's on wikipedia...at least I think that's what I think is the last scene.

I liked it - way better than MIIB - if this had been the first sequel, I may have still had some enthusiasm for the series. Smith was in autopilot for most of it, doing his same old schtick, but Josh Brolin definitely killed it. Brolin and Michael Stuhlbarg steal the movie. Boris the bad guy was decent and I thought his character design was very cool - no horrible Rip Torn jumping in the air doing a bicycle kick moments in this one, which is a huge plus ;) The story is a bit muddled and K's secrets smack of retcon, but I had fun with it. I wish we could have had a little bit more of Agent AA, since I love Will Arnett but in a Sonnenfeld flick, there isn't time for such things. Saw it in IMAX 3D and thought it looked great throughout. Not a knockout or a true 'MUST SEE', but if you're looking for a fun diversion (and have already seen The Avengers 3 times) then it's worth checking out.

Though I'm not an 8-year-old, I enjoyed the film. Much better than the second installment. Brolin completely nailed the character and Griffin was a cool new edition. The ending was cool and touching. It was fun.

Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
Saw it. Fun and entertaining, and Josh Brolin is brilliant. But still fails to capture the magic of the original. Boris was not a very good villain, too brute-like IMO. Thought Griffin looked familiar, didn't recognize him as the actor from A Serious Man without his glasses. I give three stars and hope they won't make anymore. I do like how they kind of brought everything full circle at the end.

Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
Saw it tonight. I went in with fairly low expectations so maybe that's why but I actually really enjoyed it. A lot better than Men In Black II and I'd say it was pretty close to being as good as the original. Maybe fell a little short but still good. Josh Brolin was great in this. Even Smith who I'm normally not a big fan was okay I thought.

So.....did ANYONE watch it in 3D?
I may opt for 3D anyway in the hopes they show a Prometheus trailer. My free ticket covers $10, so I only have to dig up 50 cent to pay for it. |

Better in every way than part 2, honestly. While it lacked the 'freshness' of the original (some of the quirky alien gags felt a bit old hat by this point), it makes up for it with one key factor: heart. This movie works because it puts the characters and story ahead of the FX and crazy setups.

Although I'm in the (apparent) minority of people who actually enjoyed MIIB, the new installment was better in every way. Brolin was absolutely perfect as a young K, so much so that at times I forgot that I wasn't watching a younger Tommy Lee Jones. And the story itself was very good, both in terms of plot and character development. Oh, and I loved the visual references to Frank, too. |

Saw an early 3D showing today and enjoyed it. Easily better than the previous film, but comes up short of the original, which wasn't amazing to begin with. Nice to see Smith back on the big screen, and Brolin gave the film a much needed boost. The 3D effects were pretty good for the most part. I also thought Boris was a very good alien villain.

Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
Good movie. Just as solid as the first. Once again, it felt really short. When they get to the baseball stadium, I thought to myself "don't let this end in five minutes". Thankfully, there was another entire sequence. Sonnefeld just keeps it going. For instance, some other director would have taken the trip from NY to FL for a conversation or something goofy. But with Sonnefeld, they're there in five seconds.
The best parts? The arc of J and K's relationship was really good. The Andy Worhol scene was hilarious. And that guy who can see the future was a good addition. And it's really like watching a Saturday morning cartoon. There's nothing rich to analyze. And it's not some intensly fufilling experience that stays with you afterwards. Just a quick fun movie (and up there with the best of it's kind). |

Saw it today in 2D and very much enjoyed it. It was alot of fun and captured some of the magic from the 1st film. Lots of funny moments and it was good to see Will Smith back on the big screen again.
 I agree with everyone that Josh Brolin was indeed the highlight. He absolutely nailed playing the younger K. His banter with J was often hilarious. I especially enjoyed seeing him eventually warm up to J's goofball antics. Nothing really to nit pick or overanalyze. Just a fun time with some old familiar faces. |

Hmmm. Another thing. I liked Wild Wild West, just as much as Sonnefeld's other movies. But I still can't distinguish why that movie is considered 'bad', and this movie is considered 'good'.

I'm guessing because the source material was a classic TV Western show and the final product being some over the top steam punk sci-fi was a turnoff. I didn't think it was horrible, but it wasn't great either.
The thing is that the show took those elements seriously whereas the movie tried to make it all big and goofy (not that there wasn't plenty of comedy in the show as well). Per Wikipedia: Similar to the series it was based on, the film features a large amount of gadgetry. The film serves as a parody, however, as the gadgetry is more highly advanced, implausible steampunk technology and bizarre mechanical inventions, including innumerable inventions of the mechanological geniuses Artemus Gordon and Dr. Loveless, such as nitroglycerine-powered penny-farthing bicycles, spring-loaded notebooks, bulletproof chainmail, flying machines, steam tanks, and Loveless's giant mechanical spider. |
Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
Wow. I was going to post almost the exact same reply. WWW (TV) did treat even the fantastic elements seriously. Yes, it was one of the first examples of steampunk (long before that name even existed), but they made even those elements believable, for the most part.
The other difference i see is that the MIB franchise is given a certain amount of over the top license, given its "hook" of having extraterrestrials of all different shapes and sizes living among us, but masquerading as humans. WWW had no such license. |
Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
I enjoyed it. I agree that Brolin nailed Tommy Lee. I also found myself thinking that I was just just watching a younger version of Tommy Lee in pretty much all of the flashback scenes.
I thought Boris as the villain was extremely weak. Both villains in the prior 2 movies were much better. Even though it didn't really affect my enjoyment of the movie, I found it odd that they pretty much completely ignored the mythology of the first 2 movies. I like pretty much everything Will Smith has ever done so maybe that influenced my opinion somewhat but I give it a solid B+. Good movie...not great but definitely good enough to keep you entertained for 2 hours. |

The villain in #1 was memorable because he was a giant roach that wore a man skin suit. The second villain was anorexic.

Is the 3D worth it? Does it detract? I only saw the first one, and it did seem short. When it was over, i was surprised, it didn't seem like there was much movie there. |

I really liked MIB3. A lot.
I was pleasantly surprised - I expected a good movie (better than the 2nd, but not as good as the first), but what I got was a very good movie that genuinely rivals the first. It's a fun movie. It's entertaining, it's got some great visuals, a good bad guy, a fantastic performance from Brolin, and it never lets up. The one thing I wasn't prepared for is just how sentimental the movie gets. And not in a cheesy way, either. For a movie that didn't have a finished shooting script when they actually started filming this one turned out remarkably well. It's not high art, nor does it aspire to be. It's just a good, fun summer movie. If you're on the fence I definitely recommend giving it a chance. |
Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
I thought it was fun, but forgettable. Josh Brolin nailed his part, but I really thought the bad guy was pretty weak - so I didn't care so much about the plot as I did the chemistry between Smith/Brolin and Smith/Jones. I figured out the twist/emotional ending before Smith even travel backed in time (they hinted at it a little TOO much!), so when it came I wasn't as suprised or moved as I probably should have been.
While much, much better than Part II, it does still lack the magic of the original, but considering the 10 year lag, they did a pretty good job. I give it a B-minus. |

Every time I saw Boris, I couldn't get an image of Randy Macho Man Savage out of my head. I kept waiting for Boris to say "Snap into a Slim Jim"

Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
OK I did see it today. The 3d was pretty consistent throughout, not a lot of real "IN YOUR FACE" moments till the jump and the end, but it was 3d enough throughout to flesh out the environment. I didn't see the end coming but I wasn't really thinking about it. Though my kid was not the only kid in there, there were definitely moments that went over the kids heads, but luckily none were really essential (Warhol, other aliens). There was a nod to the racial environment of the time but not enough to really change the tone of the movie.
I liked the bad guy, but it did seem like there is potentially a movie in that backstory as well (note, I didn't see M2B or MIB2 or whatever it's called). The spikes were probably the worst part for kids, but my kid weathered it fine. It was fun. It wasn't hilariously funny, but it was fun. I always want to spend more time with the crazy alien creations, though. |
Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
Really, really enjoyed it. Of course, I never thought part 2 was that bad either. Just a quick and entertaining movie, with some humorous moments like the previous MIB movies only with some more heart at the end. The best parts of these movies have always been the banter between Smith and Jones, and it was great to see Brolin pick that right up so effortlessly. All three were just a joy to watch. I agree with those that felt that villain wasn't anything special though, and him being fairly uninteresting is the only knock I have on the movie. Well, that and the lack of Frank the Pug actually being in the movie outside of a picture.

Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones return for the 3rd installment of the Men in Black franchise. They bring along Josh Brolin, who plays the younger K character when J has to go back in time to save older K. Brolin does a spot-on K impersonation in his younger years.
The film isn't as busy as the first one was, and I didn't much like the 2nd one, and it has a decent storyline, but the villain is too one-note and un-interesting. It did feel like Will Smith was over-acting at times, maybe that's the J character, but it's been a while since I saw either of 2 MIB films, so maybe I'm just not as forgiving of his portrayal. And if this was the last MIB film, it managed to tie up most of the loose ends. I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-. |
Re: Men in Black 3 -- (2012, D: Sonnenfeld, S: Smith, Jones, Brolin) -- Reviews Threa
Never saw part 2, but I thoroughly loved this one. I didn't go into it expecting The Godfather, and what I got was much better than expected- a summer tentpole sequel that has geniune comedy, visceral thrills, well-done 3D, and a great story that was actually pretty touching.
Tommy Lee Jones, sadly, is really starting to look rough around the edges and I wonder if his reduced role in this outing is due to health/age issues. He gave a fine performance but there was something subdued in his eyes that make me feel this may be his last or one of his last films. Great actor. I hope I'm wrong and that he's doing just fine. Josh Brolin was fantastic and I really have to admit to finding myself hoping that if there's a 4, there will be some excuse made for Brolin's K to somehow be zapped forward and stuck in the future so he and Will Smith become the partnership for whatever's left of the franchise. What happened to the women? Didn't see part 2, but I remember Linda Fiorentino having a prominent role in part 1. Emma Thompson was great as a boss, but how about a sexy Woman in Black to hit the field with J and K and kick some alien ass? |
