Do you spend this much time defending every film that looks awful?

do you spend this much time condemning movies you haven't actually seen? seems pretty close minded and ignorant to me.

Oh c'mon, Rise of the Planet of the Apes could have EASILY been horseshit...just based on the trailers. And Battle: LA had some kick-ass trailers. The movie definitely didn't live up to them.

I still maintain the only thing against Battleship is the name. If it wasn't drawing all of that mockery, I think it would come across as more of a B-movie Transformers knock-off. I always thought it looked pretty cool visually and we haven't seen a lot of naval combat movies of late. I probably won't catch it in theaters but I'd be okay with a blind buy based on what I've heard from people I trust.

I love all types of films including popcorn films...but the minute you start criticizing mediocre or bad ones, you are labeled as a arthouse snob or elitist who can't turn off his brain and just enjoy an entertaining film. For an example, please see below:

The tough thing about those that immediately bash stuff that (admittedly) looks like crap is that everyone ends up having their own crappy movies that the end up realizing they enjoy to some extent and defend

Boxoffice.com's 4 day predictions:

Men in Black 3 $73,000,000

Marvel's The Avengers $46,000,000 $522,200,000
$600 million for The Avengers seems inevitable.

I said it looks awful. It does. I'm just curious if you are this vehement about every single movie that looks bad.

I feel those estimates are a bit steep. I see MIB3 only doing $60 million over the four-day weekend, if it's lucky.

Memorial Day isn't a big weekend unless you release a big film on the weekend a la The Hangover: Part II. Prince of Persia and Sex and the City 2 happened to be released on the weekend in 2010 and both underperformed. Same goes for the Night at the Museum and Terminator sequels the year before that.

I think MIB3 could be a hit on the international market, but the US market? I don't know.

I think MIB3 will do fine, $73m seems about right, but we'll see. I wonder how many people are still sore over MIB2 being a pile of shit.

Men in Black 1 opened to $50.1m over the 4th of July in 1997 (5 day = $84m) en route to $250m domestic, $589m worldwide
Men in Black 2 opened to $52.1m over the 4th of July in 2002 (5 day = $87m) en route to $190m domestic, $441m worldwide

I've also heard the Men in Black is pretty good, so who knows. Might be a slower burn but I think it'll do alright.

I think 10 years is enough time to get over MIB 2. Smith's last action movie was Hancock, way back in July 2008. I think he'll be able to get the crowds back this weekend.

A.O. Scott gives MIB3 a good review in today's New York Times:
