I thought that this was a relatively accessible movie. I would put it on the same level as Castaway. It's slow, but always fascinating and fun to watch. I thought it would hit $75M or so.

uhhhhh...I think Castaway is a lot easier to digest for most people than Cloud Atlas.

I like this movie, but it seems like a better made, cosmic version of "More American Graffiti". Anyone who's seen "MAG" will know what I'm talking about.

From Box Office Guru:
The sci-fi epic Cloud Atlas fell by a reasonable 45% in its second weekend to an estimated $5.3M giving Warner Bros. a dismal $18.3M in ten days. A $30M domestic final seems likely for the $100M+ budgeted project.

I know they financed it the way a lot of indies do (selling overseas rights to fund the project). I wonder what Warner Bros. actually has invested in Cloud Atlas.

I guess we won't be seeing a Cloud Atlas ride at Six Flags after all.

I was hoping for a Cloud Atlas cloud atlas. It's like Google Earth, as seen by the characters in the film.

Interview on Cloud Atlas with the directors.

I liked the first response:
Awardsline: After Natalie Portman referred the book to you during V for Vendetta, was there any kind of bidding war? Or were your agents like, “Oh, no don’t option that!”
Andy Wachowski: No. This was right before Speed Racer so we still had some pull with Warner Bros. Joel (Silver) swept in and bought the property for Warner Bros., and I think that somebody was trying to negotiate the price down at the time, and they came in and just paid full price, so there was no real bidding war.

Too challenging and inaccessible. My wife and I liked it a lot, but it doesn't have a universally accessible payoff, I think, so it wasn't going to benefit from word-of-mouth.

They couldn't figure out how to advertise this one correctly. It's very entertaining, very well paced (great editing syncing the highs and lows of each story) and generally well acted (hated that I couldn't understand anything being said in the post apocalyptic story though) - for its long run time it flew by - but there are a few downsides to how they executed it. I didn't care for their attempt to make everyone look different story to story, it was distracting. Kazoo seemed odd all around. Also, it seemed like the movie was too short - there was a lot of detail that seemed glossed over. Not sure if the
was intentional or not but it kind of threw me for a minute.
This, imo, would have been perfect as an HBO series of some sort, but I'm glad it got made regardless, it's definitely unique even if a little surprisingly straight forward.

It bombed because it was an art film that was being advertised as a big budget extravaganza.
And it's still my favorite film of the year.

Watched this, wow, a great movie. Really enjoyed it.
Baffled that it did not make more at the box office.
I dont see why Hugo made 185 million and this only 65 million. Cloud Atlas was loads better.
GREAT musical score.
The speed it picks up is great in the second half.
This is the second best movie for me of 2012.

I certainly believe it's well made and acted (haven't seen it), but I had no interest in what was presented as the story - a group of reincarnated characters "finding themselves". (if that's not what it's about than they failed marketing it)
The sci-fi segment is an instant turn off to some, but I think for the most part people just flat out rejected the premise. Kind of like what's happening to Rise of the Guardians...it might be interesting and unique, but audiences just aren't interested.

I loved the movie.
4 people walked out of theater, 2 couples (not simultaneously).
A girl behind us kept saying that she didn't understand anything.

Slight spoiler to clarify that plot aspect

But the movie is very well made, and pulls you in. The movie time just flew by. The narration, the pacing, the story switches ... just masterful.
I am not sure how one would go about marketing this movie.
