I really liked this movie. I didn't love it though. It kind of reminded me of Lost in that it has that "everyone is connected" sentiment. Whether you think that's good or bad, it might give you a little clue on whether you'll like it or not. I actually thought the movie would go a little more over the top and was surprised by how straight forward it was. Had fun putting everything together and look forward to future screenings where I can put together what I missed. There are so many cheesy/corny elements that people are going to nitpick to death. Already seen Hugo's green "leprechaun" mentioned and it is a WTF? when he first appears but if you can get into the groove, it'll play better. If not, I can't say I'm not surprised why people might not like it. See it at least once. Preferably get off your ass and see it at a theater.

I think it's the addition of the top hat that brought on the leprechaun comment since he doesn't talk with an Irish accent in that particular segment at all. Nor does he ask for Hanks' Lucky Charms.

What's dumb about it? Both movies have seemingly unrelated storylines and characters that interweave and eventually connect with each other in unexpected ways in order to highlight how everyone is connected.

I think a comparison to Crash is more a comparison to trite social commentary.

The more and more I think about it, the more like Leprechaun this movie is. So this movie is a cross between Leprechaun and Crash. Any others?

I just get the feeling that you want to use the word pretentious to describe why you didn't like Cloud Atlas and you bring up the film that has been called pretentious more than any in recent history, Crash.

Having a different opinion on his opinion? Of course. Calling him a "hater" and saying his comparison is "dumb" are cheap shots in my book. You get bent out of shape out of the word "pretentious" yet it's okay for you to use dumb and hater.

I finally got a chance to see "Cloud Atlas" today, the intertwining of 6 sets of characters at various points in time, with editing and a screenplay that kept the overall story progressing at a nice clip, so much so that it was one of the quickest 160-minute films I've seen in quite a while. I'll see it again, and I rarely do that these days.
Overall themes of "love and sacrifice", "facing down immorality and sparking revolution", "soul-mates finding one another through time, again and again" were hammered home, but in a way that wasn't too didactic or over-done. The core cast played multiple characters, and some of the make-up working really well, and by the time you stay for the credits to see all the principal actors and photos of each of their characters, you'll have a good laugh at the ones you missed. The trio of the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer worked well in how their segments blended together and supported the overall vision of the film.
I give it 3.5 stars, or a grade of B+.

But you know they're connected from the beginning. It's not meant to be some revelation that these characters and stories connect.

Haven't seen any trailers or read any reviews, so I went into this only on your say-so.
Sigh.
This wasn't a bad movie, just a really, really ambitious one that didn't deliver.
My favorite storyline is Somni's.

Honestly, I'm glad people dug the flick. I thought parts of it were admirable, but overall, it wasn't my cup of tea. If you connected with the flick, that's awesome. That doesn't mean it's impenetrable to criticism.

Yeah, it's been a while since I've seen Crash, so it's kind of hazy. I still think it's a fair comparison. Multiple storylines, intertwining plots, etc.

Loved the "Neo Seoul" and "After the Fall" stories. They were absolutely spectacular. Neo Seoul felt like a real nice homage to Blade Runner, The Fifth Element and Serenity.
