It's a gamble for sure. It's also kind of fucking fresh too. I'd rather see something be this bold than say something else that we'd expect. Fail or not. It's got my attention for being something else than the standard.Originally Posted by CloverClover
This flick looks pretty bad, all the A-list overly made-up movie stars and special effects, and how serious it takes itself. I think it will be a flop because it has no market. Too much romance and cheese for sci-fi fans, too bizarre for tom hanks fans, too much tom hanks for the the teenie bopper crowd. After the historic flop of Speed Racer, I'm surprised they got another huge budget to work with.

Really want to see this, the 5 something minute trailer was awesome don't like Berry that much in it, she kinda looks out of place but Hanks is awesome so he more than makeups for it

That's actually the way I feel about Berry in this. She kind of sticks out in a bad way just cuz well...I dunno. She's kind of unmemorable.

I would like to see this, but have a feeling I might fall asleep. I have tried reading the book and it is a major slog with tough to decipher language at times.

Well, I saw this a couple nights ago. I don't have any familiarity with the book, but the movie is tremendously ambitious. I think this will not do well, simply because I think it will be too challenging for the average American movie-goer.
It's really well-made though, and the actors do a good job. Yes, some of the make-up is not believable, but some of the roles they're playing are really stretched, as all the actors appear in different roles in most of the 6 different time periods, sometimes playing different genders or races. I thought Halle Barry did a good job. Tom Hanks was the only distracting one for me. That might be because I don't care for Tom Hanks, but he also sticks out like a sore thumb in any time period where he's playing a supporting role.
If you don't mind having to do some thinking in your movies, then I think you should go see this. My wife and I were discussing the move for over an hour after it finished. If you think you're going to fall asleep though, don't go. The movie pretty much requires your attention and concentration the whole time. And it's a 2 hour 45 min movie.
Stick around for the credits. There's a montage that shows you all the roles each actor played. There will probably be quite a few that you missed and will be surprised by.

It looks like not every theatre is getting this in IMAX, and the release might be scaled back significantly this weekend. Official reports tomorrow.

Berry and Hanks were on Leno and Letterman tonight, respectively. I get the feeling this $100+ million movie is gonna flop big-time and everyone involved knows it. Both hosts have seen it, the former didn't mention at all whether he liked it or not which is always a bad sign and Letterman spent most of the interview asking Hanks to explain plot points to him. Hanks looked almost embarassed giving an overall general synopsis of the movie's convouted story, even giving away certain plot points like which characters you should pay more attention to and what certain images mean symbollically. "The people with so-and-so symbols on their clothes will be the ones to make the important decisions that will affect their souls and their next lives and where they stand on the Enlightenment scale over the course of centuries..."
When the actors are quarterbacking and giving audiences a heads up on any confusion they may have before their movie is even released, you know the studio is worried this is gonna be a hard sell for Joe SixPack lol.
Still gonna see it this weekend.

Cloud Atlas appears to be as polarizing as it looks. The rating keeps on dropping as we get closer to release. At 63% (81% a week ago). I'm still excited about seeing it tomorrow.

Unsurprisingly, Roger Ebert's 4 star review: http://www.rogerebert.com/apps/pbcs....IEWS/121029991

I'm going next week as this does look a little intriguing. The tricky part is figuring when to go to the bathroom during this 2hr 45 minute film.Originally Posted by Osiris3657

Nice review here: http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment...on-all-levels/
As enticing as this review is, it makes me want to wait for the blu ray rather than see it in theaters. This may be a movie you want to pause and rewind a few times on initial viewing, and echoing sleepyhead, missing anything with a bathroom break may make you entirely lost.

As a film buff, I feel I owe it to myself to see something extremely expensive, ambitious, and ambiguous.

I LOVE this movie.
Wow! Standing ovation for the Wachowskis and Mr. Tyker. This is my favorite movie of the year. All 6 stories were fascinating, well directed, gorgeously shot, and perfectly acted. I was really involved in the stories and cared about the characters.
At the very least it deserves an editing Oscar. Holy shit I bet it took a lot of hard work making a nearly 3 hour movie fly by and all 6 stories flow smoothly together.
I just ordered the soundtrack for this. It is powerful. Another Oscar nomination there (or at least it should be).
I completely get why this film will be so polarizing. I expect a number of "I hated this" posts in this thread.
The dialogue at times is difficult to understand in that classic Wachowski way. (unfortunately sometimes literally...I didn't understand 75% of what Tom Hank's character said in the very distant future story where he's a...forest/mountain man?).
My favorite story was the one set in futuristic Korea.
I will definitely catch another showing of this.
Grade: A

This was an extremely powerful movie for me, and it'll be a first day purchase for me when it hits disc. I just loved it.
And it's going to flop hard. Unbelievably hard. There are hardly any showings around here, and my showing had 4 other people in it.

Anyone heard whether it's worth seeing in Imax?

Loved it! And I can't wait to see it again. I was bummed the 10:30pm Friday night IMAX showing I saw was only half full...but I guess after reading some other comments, it may have been a better turnout than most. :-/

People are going to find reasons to hate this movie. A lot of people will use the stupid word, "pretentious".
I loved this movie. Very thick. Almost all of the individual scenes were interesting. On the surface, not very hard to follow at all. This is not a cryptic or baffling movie - like Southland Tales. It's a movie about the same 'souls' living their lives again and again - unable to overcome their inherent character traits - under different circumstantial technologies and whatnot.
The two futuristic timelines were a lot of fun for sci-fi guy like myself.

I quite enjoyed it, but didn't leave feeling "THAT WAS AMAZING!" as I was hoping I would. I haven't read the book and avoided any info on the movie (other than one trailer). It was funny to me that as I watched it, I guessed who directed what based on the look and feel and was spot on. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing for the movie itself.

Just got back from seeing it. If you liked the movie, Crash, but found its message too subtle, wished it were three hours long, had more laser guns, and featured Hugo Weaving as a giant, evil leprechaun - then you will go absolutely apeshit over Cloud Atlas.
