Who is the best actor of the older generation?

Of the actors still around, from the 60's-90's, and not necessarily on top of their games today, but have legacies that are cinema hall of fame worthy...

who is the absolute best?

Re: Who is the best actor of the older generation?

DeNiro

Why don't you rank them for us?

It's hard to choose from some of those listed, but without actually voting just yet I'm going to say Anthony Hopkins for now. I may change my mind later... -kd5-

Re: Who is the best actor of the older generation?

I'd argue that the 60s is probably a horrible era to include knowing that the 70s was next door. I can't answer this yet.

I'd probably say De Niro. He was a powerhouse.

Re: Who is the best actor of the older generation?

Max Von Sydow

Sorry can't pick just one....

Of those listed, in their prime, Deniro, Hackman, Keitel and Nicholson.

Anthony Hopkins is such a ham.

I don't think Gibson or Eastwood belong on that list.

Re: Who is the best actor of the older generation?

DENIRO...probably my pick for #1 all time. No one has put a run together like he did in the 70s and 80s. Goodfellas, Casino and Heat were just icing on the cake.

Re: Who is the best actor of the older generation?

As much as I like DeNiro a lot of his roles are similar to me. His best being Goodfellas, Wag the Dog, Awakenings, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and King of Comedy.

Which is why I went with Dustin Hoffman.

Also, where's Denzel Washington? Glory, Philadelphia, Training Day, The Hurricane, Inside Man, Malcolm X, Devil in a Blue Dress, all great performances. I'd rank him up there when he's not doing shitting Tony Scott movies.

Pacino is solely for his 70s/early 80s stuff.

Re: Who is the best actor of the older generation?

Although he's never been a "star", John Hurt can act rings around everyone else on that list.

Although a great actor, Pacino to me seems to only be able to play two types of characters. The crazy, over the top type like in Heat or Devil's Advocate or the quiet, shy type like in The Godfather, Serpico and And Justice for All.

IMO DeNiro is much more versatile. Although he is widely known as the mobster type (Goodfellas, Casino), you can watch him in films like King of Comedy, Taxi Driver, Awakenings, Mean Streets, Cape Fear, Jacknife or Night and the City and he's so good that you almost forget it's Robert DeNiro on-screen

Re: Who is the best actor of the older generation?

Let's not forget Godfather Part II, which he did pretty much the whole damn role in Italian, and Once Upon A Time in America (when the fuck are we going to get the full Leone cut?!?!)

This list needs more Denzel Washington as well (he's not THAT old, but he's older than Tom Hanks!).

I saw him in The 6th Day and Deep Impact. Those were his two most notable performances, right? ;)

Re: Who is the best actor of the older generation?

Over the past 15 to 20 years, De Niro is such a pale shadow of his former self that it is hard to pick him even though I consider him the best actor of his generation.

I will thus exclude myself from picking anyone.
