Sorry to disrupt the scheduled live commentary, but:Then again, quite a few people consider Lord of the Rings, The Departed, and No Country for Old Men masterpieces. I don't necessarily agree with those assessments, but I would say that they have just as much of a chance of holding up over time as any of the four you name. Then again, as someone who has seen almost all of the Best Picture winners and many of the nominees since the beginning of the Oscars, I don't really buy that there's been much of a decrease in the quality of their choices. I do think there has been a slight slump in the quality of American filmmaking over the past decade (though the increase in quality of the cinema of certain parts of the world has more than made up for it), but the Academy has always gravitated towards certain kinds of films, and there have always been great films that won and really mediocre (or worse) films that won. (And if I had seen those films when they came out I might have thought differently about them than I do watching them as a 21st century viewer.)

The Artist may be forgotten in ten years. On the other hand, it may be a beloved classic in fifty years. Times change, as do people's expectations and worldviews, and predicting how people will react to something in the future has always seemed a bit pointless - as do declarative statements like "x film will be forgotten in 10 years" - especially since those "predictions" are generally just based on what the predictor currently thinks of the film, the assumption being that he (or she) has a better feel for the movie tastes of future audiences and therefore his current minority opinion will be the default opinion of the future.

I guess voters assumed that making Glenn Close look manly wasn't a terribly incredible feat.
