Is that scene supposed to make Bad Boys II look good or bad?

A few friends of mine don't mind the length. They think if you're going to spend the $9-15 to see this movie, that they want the most for their money. Both of them hate really short movies. They think more people are tolerant of super long summer movies.

I don't know, I see their point in a way, but 165 minutes still seems awfully bloated. 120-130 minutes would seem a little more reasonable. Also it hurts the theaters because of the lack of screenings. I agree that I wouldn't want to see 85-90 minute movies if I'm paying that kind of money, especially for this which will have more expensive IMAX showings.

I just watched 2 and 3 yesterday...even those are way to long. 3 picks up a bit just because the Battle of Chicago is so awesome... but it's still way too much. 2:15 with credits is enough time for these.

That scene is nothing compared to the "rats fuck like we do" scene.

I haven't read through the entire thread but have the posts where people complain about a movie about giant robots having too many action scenes and explosions started yet?

No, but they will. In the meantime, here's Variety's mixed-to-favorable review:

http://variety.com/2014/film/reviews...on-1201238365/

I especially liked this paragraph about the use of Hong Kong locations:

Though “Pacific Rim” beat “Age of Extinction” to location shooting in the former British colony, the lurid images Guillermo del Toro served up made the ultra-modern city look like Chinatown. Kudos to Bay, then (despite the surreally ubiquitous lanterns), for capturing the city’s gleaming high-rises and seedy alleyways with lively verisimilitude. In several scenes, the dull, rusty hues of the man-made Transformers blend especially well with the grimy tenements, which resemble stacks of matchboxes. There’s even one stunt that may or may not be a reference to an incident that took place during production, when local gangsters demanding a “turf fee” reportedly threw an air conditioner at Bay (an indefensible act nonetheless in keeping with the spirit of the franchise’s electrical-appliance fetish).
Oh, and in response to an earlier post, the context of which I forget, Stanley Tucci is in this.

Such scenes are more effective when they involve characters I give the tiniest shit about.

That was truly vulgar and disgusting. Why they thought it was funny was beyond me.

I've heard that argument, but I don't buy it. A film should be as long as a film needs to be. It's not the filmmakers' fault that ticket prices have become exorbitant. I think that if you paint on a big enough canvas, they hope the audience won't notice the flaws, or that audiences will just beaten into submission with time and money. Then again, I like Peter Jackson, so what do I know?

I agree with this...however, as we've seen from the last 3 Transformers movies and frankly, the majority of Michael Bay's filmography, these films don't NEED to be that long. I'm one to admit that I enjoy Bay's movies for the most part but the guy's output would be a whole lot better if he found an editor or producer that reigned him in on his bloated films. I'd argue that cutting a half hour on Transformers 2 and 3, as well as Bad Boys II, and Pearl Harbor would improve them all quite a bit. It wouldn't turn them into masterpieces by any means but it would make them a bit more tolerable.

The Island would have been much better at 90 minutes.

Exactly.

Frankly, it could be argued that Armageddon and The Rock could have used some trimming as well. Pain and Gain didn't need to be over 2 hours long either.

Haha, I love the RT blurb from the Variety review, "Who cares if the human characters are even more dispensable and the plot even more scattershot than usual?"

I'll eventually catch this when it's available to rent at the local library. No way am I paying to watch this 2hr 45min mess in theaters. I barely made it through the last Pirates movie, and that was with starting and stopping it at home as well.

The mass success of Armageddon and The Rock I think is why Bay doesn't care and isn't limited.

I equate his movies to a big steak dinner.

If that steak is a 72 oz poterhouse that you must finish in one sitting.

I'm not sure what amazes me more:

The fact that after four tries, Bay still hasn't managed to make an even remotely entertaining film out of this franchise, or the fact that after four tries people STILL swarm to these movies, despite the fact that there hasn't been a good one yet.

I'd really like to see this franchise tackled by another director at this point, with no involvement by Bay at all.

I can't wait to see the film. I have remained spoiler free from plot points. The first three weren't the strongest on story so I hope we don't something as stupid as a woman holding a city hostage for 6 months with a bomb because she has daddy issues.

Would you prefer James Mangold, Marc Forster, or Sam Mendes?

(I'll stick with Bay, thank you.)

I'd prefer just about anyone . Or just watch the still-entertaining Beast Wars cartoon.

Guillermo Del Toro presents a film by Alfonso Cuaron:

Transformers Cinco

Written by Alejandro González Iñárritu

Starring Jason Statham ?
