I'd have to go with-
The 3-way showdown at the end of "For A Few Dollars More"
Chow Yun Fat on the ladder with the machine gun in "Peace Hotel".
Bill Paxton freakin' out against the Aliens (Oh, you want some of this too!!??)
Jimmie Stewart taking out Lee Marvin in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"

I just watched this last night and forgot all about that scene. You're right, I am also surprised that no one mentioned it yet (I even forgot about it).

Here are some of my fav gunfights not mentioned already.
(1) A Better Tomorrow 2 - shootout in the mansion (they must have killed 100 people).
(2) Hard Target - shootout in the Mardi Gras grave yard.
(3) Die Hard 2 - shootout in the airport annex.
(4) Double Tap - shootout in the movie theater.
(5) A Better Tomorrow - Chow Yun Fat with guns hidden in the resturant corridor shootout.
Thats all I can think of for now.

All of these are at the top of their own sub-categories in my opinion:
Hard Boiled hospital scene.
Final standoff in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
Django and his coffin. (Please don't spoil this one for anybody who hasn't seen it)

The warehouse in HARD BOILED is the best one I have seen. After that comes the opening and closing sequences from THE WILD BUNCH. While it doesn't last very long, I like the gunfight in SW:ANH where Han and Luke are blasting imperial officers and blasting communicators between people. Really we staged IMO.

Hey, that's funny. I didn't see anyone mention Desperado until the very end... that's the movie I thought of, too.
But I haven't seen any of John Woo's Hong Kong flicks... so maybe when I catch those, there will be a new king in my mind. I guess I don't really consider Saving Private Ryan having any gunfights... they're more like "war scenes" to me. Different category, in my opinion.
(Incidentally, another good WWII flick that was released on HBO (and is on video and possibly DVD) is "When Trumpets Fade," starring (among others) Ron Eldard as a soldier who just does NOT want to be fighting in Europe, but has a knack for staying alive.)

after going back really far back in time (no sigs even) i found this thread. lots of good choices but mine would be the opening gun battle in hard boiled, the galoria scene in t2, and the lobby scene in the matrix.

Did anybody mention the end of STATE OF GRACE?

The Minnesota shootout in The Long Riders.
The climactic shootout in State of Grace.
Cartoonish shootouts that lack realism, such as what predominates in Woo films, leave me fairly cold.
