re: Before Midnight (2013, D: Linklater, S: Hawke, Delpy)

I was totally unaware this was even being made. I loved the first two (though I've only seen them once each when they first hit video -- I could stand to watch them each again). This is great news for me, as I'd love to see what happened to these characters. It's such a great love story and how often do you get to see a sequel that's made to further explore the characters rather than to capitalize on the box office popularity of the previous film?

I wish there was available video of Siskle & Ebert's review of Before Sunrise, because it was a great segment. Siskle said that he'd been saying for years someone could make a great movie about a first date and that finally someone had.

Closest thing I could get is Siskel's video pick of the week at the end of this episode. I've been watching a few reviews (RoboCop, Total Recall) just now coincidentally:

Wow I cannot believe it's been 9 years since Before Sunset. I discovered Before Sunrise on DVD but we made it a ppoint to go see Before Sunset when it was in limited theatrical release.

Romanticism aside, Did they hook up for some mattress magic in the 2nd movie. I seem to recall they didn't in "Sunrise". They should really make it happen already after 3 movies.

They did hook up in the first (though she denies it in the second, it sure looked like they did in the first). I don't recall them "doing the deed" in the second film though.

I have a real soft spot in my heart for these films. My then-girlfriend, now-wife and I were in the throws of young love when we watched the first on video. We were married with a toddler when we saw the second on DVD (the "two people running a daycare center who used to date" line rally hit home with me at the time). Now, as a couple, we're older, wiser and more settled in our Forties and so, I assume, are Celine and Jesse. It's cool to follow their lives as they progress on a similar trajectory as our own. It's sort of like a fictional version of the 7 Up documentaries for Gen X.

BTW: Neither film is on Blu Ray. How is that possible? I see "Sunrise" Streams free on Amazon Prime (but not on Netflix, strangely). Will have to add it to my Watchlist.

yeah this is a freaking tragedy. I'm guessing once this new film is due to be released on DVD/Blu that the two are well.

Part of me is hoping for a Criterion box set trilogy package...

In the second one, she admits that they had sex twice in the first. Then in the second one, he missed his plane to stay with her for a bit. I never saw the first, but I saw the second as well as certain parts of it millions of times due to working in the theater that summer.

re: Before Midnight (2013, D: Linklater, S: Hawke, Delpy)

Are you sure about her admission in the second film? I seem to remember so clearly that she took exception to his book because in it, the characters had sex in the park, which she said didn't happen.

edit: Here's the scene:
Spoiler:
Céline: Are you ever in therapy?

Jesse: Oh, no. Do I seem like I'm in therapy?

Céline: (Laughs.) I'm kidding. Has it helped your sex problems?

Jesse: My SEX problems?

Céline: No, I'm kidding.

Jesse: No, c’mon, tell me the truth. I mean, we didn't have any problems that night.

Céline: No, I'm kidding! (He brushes her hair away from her eyes.) We didn't even have sex, anyway.

Jesse: But, that's a joke, right?

Céline: No, we didn't! I mean, that was the whole thing.

Jesse: No, of course we did!

Céline: No, no, no, no, we didn't. You didn't have a condom, and I never have sex without one. Especially on a one night thing. I mean, I'm extremely paranoid about my health. There's no way I would have...

Jesse: (Stops climbing the stairs, and holds his hands up. Céline turns to face him.) Whoa, I find this very scary that you don't remember what happened.

Céline: What? (Turns away and starts climbing again. Jesse follows.) No, listen, OK...I didn't write an entire book, but I kept a journal, OK? And I wrote the whole night in it. That's what I mean, you idealizing the night!

Jesse: Alright, listen! I even remember what brand of condom we used.

Céline: OK, that's disgusting. I don't want to hear it!

Jesse: It's not disgusting.

Céline: OK, you know what, when I get home, I'll check my journal from '94, but I know I'm right! (Jesse shakes his head quietly while she pauses for a moment and slows down.) Wait a minute...

Jesse: What?

Céline: Was it in the cemetery?

Jesse: No...no, we went to the cemetery in the afternoon, it was in a park. VERY late at night? In the park.

Céline: (Hand to forehead.) Wait a minute.

Jesse: (Shakes his head in disgust.) I can’t…I can’t…

Céline: (Shakes her head as if trying to remember.) No…

Jesse: Is it that forgettable? I mean, you really don't remember...(clapping hands together for emphasis) in the park!

Céline: OK, wait a minute. I...I think you might be right.

Jesse: Alright now, you're messing with me, now. Are you messing with me?

Céline: OK, no, I'm sorry! I think you...I mean, you're right, OK? Sometimes, I put things in drawers inside my head, and forget about it. (Jesse covers his eyes to show frustration.) I guess it's less painful to put certain things away than to live with it! I'm sorry!

Jesse: So that...that night was a sad memory for you?

Céline: No, I didn't mean that night in particular. I just meant certain things are better off forgotten.

Jesse: I remember that night better than I do entire years.

Céline: Me too.

Jesse: (Sarcastically.) Really?

Céline: Well, I thought I did...But, maybe I...Maybe I put it away because of the fact that...my grandmother's funeral was the day we were supposed to meet again.

Jesse: Yeah, right, it was a tough day for me, but it must have been worse for you.

Céline: It was unreal. I remember looking at her dead body in the coffin. (Sighs.) Her beautiful hands so warm, so sweet, that used to hold me, that...Nothing in that coffin resembled what I remembered of her. All the warmth was gone. Then I was crying...so confused if I was crying because I was never gonna see her again and never gonna see...(sighs) you again. I'm sorry. I'm sorry to go on like this, I've been a little down this week, I don't know.

Jesse: Why?

Céline: I don't know, nothing bad, just... reading your book, maybe? No, but...thinking about how hopeful I was that summer and fall, and since then it's been kind of a...I don't know. Memory is a wonderful thing, if you don't have to, uh, deal with the past.

Jesse: “Memory is a wonderful thing, if you don't have to deal with the past.” Can I put that on a bumper sticker? No, you know what? If you wrote a book about our night, that would be a good title!

Céline: Yeah, it could be a totally different book.

Jesse: Yeah, there'd be no sex scenes. (Céline laughs.)

Céline: But you know what?

Jesse: What?

Céline: Now that we've met again, we can change our memory of that December 16th. It no longer has that sad ending of us never seeing each other again. Right?

So I guess that means she eventually admits to it, after completely forgetting that it actually happened. Like Jesse, I found that a little hard to believe, but whatever.

Yes, she cops to the fact later on that they had sex in the first movie, and that they actually did it twice that night. Celine's a bit of a neurotic mess in the second movie and was trying to block her memories of what happened in Vienna in all the years in between.

Okay, but it (i.e. the sex act) wasn't ever shown then, correct? I just don't have a recollection of it occurring, and I pride myself on that type of thing.

They're not that well known, and they're not action, sci-fi, or horror films that would appeal to the demographic they tend to target for catalog titles. Another company might be willing, but Warner doesn't license their titles out.

I got the first one from the $5 Wal-Mart bin several years ago. I wouldn't be shocked if they were eventually released on BD through the Archive label.

They might release them on blu-ray (as a double feature?) when Before Midnight is released to blu-ray.

Correct.

Hey, will this be the lowest-grossing theatrically-released trilogy of all time? Sunrise made just over $5M domestically and Sunset made just under $6M.

We don't see them have sex, but we see them together in the park, then in the morning she isn't wearing the shirt she had on under her dress. They totally did it.

Sundance: Well After Midnight, Sony Pictures Classics Closes ‘Before Midnight’

By MIKE FLEMING JR | Friday January 25, 2013 @ 10:52am EST

EXCLUSIVE: I hear Sony Pictures Classics has closed a Sundance deal for Before Midnight, the third installment of the Richard Linklater-directed series that began with 1995′s Before Sunrise and continued with 2004′s Before Sunset. You don’t get many trilogies at Sundance, but this one premiered to raves last Sunday at Eccles Theatre in the Premiere category, and seven buyers have slowly been nipping at it ever since when they haven’t been distracted by the other auctions. This deal is well into seven-figures, and I’m told it shapes up as one of the big deals of the fest.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are back once again as Jesse and Celine and the movie takes place nine years after the last one, in Greece. That’s almost two decades after they met on a train headed to Vienna. Before Sunrise was released by Columbia Pictures, and Before Sunset was released by Warner Independent. Cinetic Media brokered the deal, which, like every other deal on one of these buzz titles, was closed way after bedtime.

re: Before Midnight (2013, D: Linklater, S: Hawke, Delpy)

Well, that makes a boxed set less likely, and probably lessens the chances of the first two being released on BD as tie-ins, since Warner wouldn't have a new film of their own to help promote. Hopefully the new film will generate enough interest anyway.

Warner still distributes the first film, right?

Yep, I've got the godawful Warner snapper case to prove it.

Two Warners and a Sony will be a difficult boxset. I hope Criterion gets the rights to them.

My excitement for this film is at a level that I refuse to watch a trailer or read a synopsis. This film could go a million different ways, I don't want any kind of an idea what I'm in for.

I'd cream my drawers if Criterion released a trilogy boxset on Blu Ray.

Super excited that I got a ticket for both the premiere screening at Tribeca and a talk with Linklater, Hawke and Delpy.
