I was totally unaware this was even being made. I loved the first two (though I've only seen them once each when they first hit video -- I could stand to watch them each again). This is great news for me, as I'd love to see what happened to these characters. It's such a great love story and how often do you get to see a sequel that's made to further explore the characters rather than to capitalize on the box office popularity of the previous film?
I wish there was available video of Siskle & Ebert's review of Before Sunrise, because it was a great segment. Siskle said that he'd been saying for years someone could make a great movie about a first date and that finally someone had.

Closest thing I could get is Siskel's video pick of the week at the end of this episode. I've been watching a few reviews (RoboCop, Total Recall) just now coincidentally:

Wow I cannot believe it's been 9 years since Before Sunset. I discovered Before Sunrise on DVD but we made it a ppoint to go see Before Sunset when it was in limited theatrical release.

Romanticism aside, Did they hook up for some mattress magic in the 2nd movie. I seem to recall they didn't in "Sunrise". They should really make it happen already after 3 movies.

I have a real soft spot in my heart for these films. My then-girlfriend, now-wife and I were in the throws of young love when we watched the first on video. We were married with a toddler when we saw the second on DVD (the "two people running a daycare center who used to date" line rally hit home with me at the time). Now, as a couple, we're older, wiser and more settled in our Forties and so, I assume, are Celine and Jesse. It's cool to follow their lives as they progress on a similar trajectory as our own. It's sort of like a fictional version of the 7 Up documentaries for Gen X.
BTW: Neither film is on Blu Ray. How is that possible? I see "Sunrise" Streams free on Amazon Prime (but not on Netflix, strangely). Will have to add it to my Watchlist.

In the second one, she admits that they had sex twice in the first. Then in the second one, he missed his plane to stay with her for a bit. I never saw the first, but I saw the second as well as certain parts of it millions of times due to working in the theater that summer.

Are you sure about her admission in the second film? I seem to remember so clearly that she took exception to his book because in it, the characters had sex in the park, which she said didn't happen.
edit: Here's the scene:
So I guess that means she eventually admits to it, after completely forgetting that it actually happened. Like Jesse, I found that a little hard to believe, but whatever.

Yes, she cops to the fact later on that they had sex in the first movie, and that they actually did it twice that night. Celine's a bit of a neurotic mess in the second movie and was trying to block her memories of what happened in Vienna in all the years in between.

Okay, but it (i.e. the sex act) wasn't ever shown then, correct? I just don't have a recollection of it occurring, and I pride myself on that type of thing.

They're not that well known, and they're not action, sci-fi, or horror films that would appeal to the demographic they tend to target for catalog titles. Another company might be willing, but Warner doesn't license their titles out.
I got the first one from the $5 Wal-Mart bin several years ago. I wouldn't be shocked if they were eventually released on BD through the Archive label.

They might release them on blu-ray (as a double feature?) when Before Midnight is released to blu-ray.

Hey, will this be the lowest-grossing theatrically-released trilogy of all time? Sunrise made just over $5M domestically and Sunset made just under $6M.

We don't see them have sex, but we see them together in the park, then in the morning she isn't wearing the shirt she had on under her dress. They totally did it.

Sundance: Well After Midnight, Sony Pictures Classics Closes ‘Before Midnight’
By MIKE FLEMING JR | Friday January 25, 2013 @ 10:52am EST
EXCLUSIVE: I hear Sony Pictures Classics has closed a Sundance deal for Before Midnight, the third installment of the Richard Linklater-directed series that began with 1995′s Before Sunrise and continued with 2004′s Before Sunset. You don’t get many trilogies at Sundance, but this one premiered to raves last Sunday at Eccles Theatre in the Premiere category, and seven buyers have slowly been nipping at it ever since when they haven’t been distracted by the other auctions. This deal is well into seven-figures, and I’m told it shapes up as one of the big deals of the fest.
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are back once again as Jesse and Celine and the movie takes place nine years after the last one, in Greece. That’s almost two decades after they met on a train headed to Vienna. Before Sunrise was released by Columbia Pictures, and Before Sunset was released by Warner Independent. Cinetic Media brokered the deal, which, like every other deal on one of these buzz titles, was closed way after bedtime.

Well, that makes a boxed set less likely, and probably lessens the chances of the first two being released on BD as tie-ins, since Warner wouldn't have a new film of their own to help promote. Hopefully the new film will generate enough interest anyway.
Warner still distributes the first film, right?

My excitement for this film is at a level that I refuse to watch a trailer or read a synopsis. This film could go a million different ways, I don't want any kind of an idea what I'm in for.
I'd cream my drawers if Criterion released a trilogy boxset on Blu Ray.

Super excited that I got a ticket for both the premiere screening at Tribeca and a talk with Linklater, Hawke and Delpy.
