A comedy about a college student on suspension who is coaxed into babysitting the kids next door, though he is fully unprepared for the wild night ahead of him.

Yeah, I'm not convinced that the guy introducing the trailer and the guy in the trailer are the same dude.

I heard on the radio here the other day that he's been working out with Brad Pitt after working together on Moneyball.

Reminds me a lot of Superbad for some reason.

I didn't think David Gordon Green's screwball comedy phase would last this long.

Ditto. Had just seen George Washington when Pineapple Express came out. Figured it was him getting the chance to have some fun. But then another and another came. Seems like his early movies are now the outliers.

They were right, it does look like an R-rated version of Adventures in Babysitting ...

Sorry but Jonah Hill has no place in the movie business unless he's fat. What role could he possibly play other than the funny (funny to some at least) fat guy?

Fixed.

Outside of Superbad, he's usually the worst thing of every film he's in.

Re: THE SITTER (2011) (dir. David Gordon Green) (Jonah Hill, Sam Rockwell)

Random realization, I've only paid to see one of his movies in the theater.

I Heart Huckabees, sneak screening (didn't realize he was in it)
40 Year Old Virgin, also didn't realize he was in it, but friend got me in to screening
Knocked Up, free screening on campus
Superbad, friend working at the theater got me in
Forgetting Sarah Marshall, paid $2 at the second run
Funny People, sneak screening
Get Him to the Greek, sneak screening
Cyrus, sneak screening

And to bring it back on subject, not gonna see this one, even if it was free.

Yeah. I remember when Pineapple Express was supposed to be a one-off kind of thing. Just him stretching his legs. What happened? He was supposed to be this generations Terrance Mallick and he turned into this generations John Landis.

I remember he once was critical of Kevin Smith and accused him of lowering the bar for independent film. Bet he regrets that.

Um, yeah, no thank you.

And skinny Jonah Hill isn't funny. Part of the reason fat Jonah hill was ever funny, imo, is because he was fat.

I wouldn't consider this, Pineapple Express or Your Highness "independent films".

^He was referring to Kevin Smith's 'independent films', not Gordon Green's.

I used to think Green was sell out... now I'm just sure of it. Though I don't think it's that bad. The Pineapple Express was hilarious and Franco showed the world he could actually act. Never saw Your Highness.

I love Green's indie films. They easily surpass any of Smith's indie flicks.

Or maybe Green just decided comedies were more fun to make.

Re: THE SITTER (2011) (dir. David Gordon Green) (Jonah Hill, Sam Rockwell)

This is kind of how I see the David Gordon Green situation. Green's been friends with Danny McBride since college, Green casts McBride in All The Real Girls, the stars align and somehow Danny McBride catches a break and becomes super famous years later, McBride keeps DGG in the loop and they continue to work together.

I LOVE George Washington, All The Real Girls, Undertow, and to a lesser extent Snow Angels...but have never really blamed Green for wanting more people to see his movies or wanting to make movies that are not so 'depressing'. How many of us here at DVDTalk actually went to the theater to see any of his previous 4 films? When Pinnapple came out, I thought he was going the Linklater/Soderberg route (one for the studio, one for himself) and would return to indie dramas (wasn't he going to write and direct Goat with Emile Hersch?) afterwards. Hasn't happened yet, but I don't blame him. I mean, if we got millions of dollars to hang out, errr I mean make movies, with the likes of James Franco and Danny McBride we would jump at that change too.

Even though I think it looks funny, I think The Sitter will bomb like his previous few and he will return to indie out of necessity. Either that or he will continue to direct episodes of Eastbound until the money runs dry. One day we will get another sad and poetic movie from him but I don't think we can call him a sellout for just wanting to laugh a lot.

Re: THE SITTER (2011) (dir. David Gordon Green) (Jonah Hill, Sam Rockwell)

As a free-wheeling homage to the zany teen comedies of the 1980s, "The Sitter" almost works, it's got misunderstood kids, slacker college guy Noah (Jonah Hill) for the main character, and less-than-satisfactory girlfriend situation that drives the plot and gets Noah in way over his head during a night of babysitting 3 kids.

It does have a bit of heart, and some decent comedy, plus good raunchy cursing here and there, and will leave you with the deja vu feeling of having seen this film before, so there you go.

I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.
