Nobody expected 190+. There were some predictions of 180, which is quite a bit less. I think some people might have factored in the reviews too highly and didn't consider the fanboy factor enough. Still not the worst drop that could have occurred.

Wait what? Neither HP nor TDK is #1 of anything except opening midnight, day, weekend. Gone with the Wind is not #1 in any of those, it's #1 in overall, adjusted grosses where neither HP nor TDK is anywhere near the top -- even unadjusted where Avatar and Titanic beat both.

TDK probably did beat HP for sheer attendance on opening weekend.

Pretty steep, I don't think they were accounting for the fact this is the 2nd half to the 7th movie in a long running serial with actual continuity. That makes it highly inaccessible to new viewers.

I don't think it'll reach that. I think it'll be a close race with Transformers around the $350 million mark when the Summer is over. I am sure HP will have over a 60% drop next weekend as these films are usually front loaded. The Dark Knight's 2nd weekend had a 52.5% drop and that film appeals to a wider audience. A film that is part 8 of a long series will probably have trouble getting new fans to show up at theaters. That's why I don't think it will add too much more than what the original brought in ($317 mil).

I think Captain America is going to open very strong this weekend and might have some decent legs.

HP might even drop 65% since it had such a gigantic opening, but WB isn't going to care because the film is going to be another massive success. They can take the profit from this to help pay for the Green Lantern blunder.

Pooh might also have been toddler counterprogramming. Family goes to the theater, and the 9-year-old sees Potter and the 6-year-old sees Pooh. Mom and Dad draw for the short straw.

I think HP7.2 will have more repeat business than past films, simply because it's the last one of the series.

I also see a re-release in the fall or Christmas season.

Looking over how much each actor made, I'm actually a little amazed that up through Order of the Phoenix the Grint and Watson topped out at $4m (Radcliffe made $14m on Phoenix). Guess thats a good reason to stay and do the full series though (Grint and Watson made $15m a piece for Part 1 and another $15m a piece for Part 2. Radcliffe made $20m on each.)

Oh, I agree, was just pointing out how much it would make using the same multiplier.

I can't wait to see WB's fiscal report claim they actually LOST money on this one. They've done it before!

Re: Alakaching! Harry Potter Breaks Midnight Record: Box Office 7/15-7/17

HP made an additional $15m yesterday in the US and crossed the $200m mark.

It tied Transformers 2 and The Dark Knight for fastest to $200m (5 days) though The Dark Knight actually made more in those 5 days (TDK had a inexplicably excellent Monday, pulling $24.5m to Harry Potters $18m).

$592.6m total worldwide thus far.

Re: Alakaching! Harry Potter Breaks Midnight Record: Box Office 7/15-7/17

I was surprised by how much I loved this movie!!!!!!!!!!! Definitely recommend, easily the best in the series next to Prisoner of Azkaban (although Goblet of Fire's good, too).

If it does as good as Avatar, which I also loved, they both deserved it.

Re: Alakaching! Harry Potter Breaks Midnight Record: Box Office 7/15-7/17

Potter made $12m on Wednesday, this leads me to believe it will have a very substantial drop this upcoming weekend. For comparison sakes -- The Dark Knight made $18m on its first Wednesday which was a drop of 11% from Tuesday, Potter's drop was around 20%. The Dark Knight had a 52.5% drop in its second weekend from $158m to $75m. With a $12m Wednesday, Potter should be on track (optimistically) for a $55m - $60m weekend - or roughly a 66% drop. That gives no consideration to Captain America potentially taking business away (or possibly providing it, if surprises everyone and opens big, then Potter may get some overflow business). Still it's pulling phenomenal numbers, currently at $604m worldwide, $215m US.

In other news, Horrible Bosses overtook Transformers 3 for the day yesterday.

Horrible Bosses now sits at $68.2m, Transformers 3 sits at $311m thus far.

Re: Alakaching! Harry Potter Breaks Midnight Record: Box Office 7/15-7/17

Boxoffice.com is predicting $55 mil for Captain America, and $52 mil for Harry Potter (-69%). I think Cap can eek out $60 mil. Hopefully it at least can debut higher than Green Lantern.

Transformers will pass $800 million worldwide after this weekend.

Why is Dark Knight the comparison film to Harry Potter & people go out of their way to say it made more?

One of the Harry Potter actors should have taken one for the team and died after it wrapped so they could have made more money.

Because it had the previous biggest weekend opening of all time which Harry Potter broke?
