I'm going to figure the Warner Bros. are gonna go to JK Rowling's home and make her churn out another HP book Misery style sometime real soon.

Heck, she created such a rich mythology they could just negotiate the rights to put out new stories within that world. Imagine some cataclysmic event - or even just old ways - that keeps the wizarding world stuck in it's way. Years in the future there would be stories of Harry Potter. Be neat to see living pictures of the gang in the old photos and/or newpapers.

Btw, $43M+ is insane. That's more than some films make in an opening weekend.

According to BOM, that figure alone would be the 13th highest opening day ever.

It would also be the 10th highest opening weekend of this year if that was all it made from Fri-Sun.

Damn. Good thing I didn't even try to go. I considered it last night. I remember that the Avatar midnight screening wasn't a big deal. I figured it'd be about the same for this.

Anyways, I'll give it a week and go see it with the old folks on some weekday morning.

Avatar didin't have anywhere near the hype leading into it. Potter is poised to have 2x the opening weekend Avatar did, and for what it's worth, Avatar made $3.5m at Midnight.

Re: Alakaching! Harry Potter Breaks Midnight Record: Box Office 7/15-7/17

Some interesting history:

The final picture in the magical franchise topped all other Harry Potter movies’ midnight grosses. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1 earned $24 million at midnight last year, while Half-Blood Prince pulled in $22.2 million. Part 2 also more-than-tripled the $12 million that Order of the Phoenix earned at midnight, and earned almost seven times as much as Goblet of Fire, which grossed $6.3 million at midnight.

Well, the opening day alone will beat Avatar's 1st weekend gross.

Overall? Not a chance.

Because the highest grossing Potter movie was the first one, at $317 million domestic. This would need to more then double it to reach Avatar's $760 domestic. 7 movies in, i'm pretty sure that audience isn't going to be there now.

There's no more competition. Captain America? Pfft.

$760 domestic? It's possible.

There's still a whole month of summer. Avatar was THE big blockbuster of the Christmas season.

Re: Alakaching! Harry Potter Breaks Midnight Record: Box Office 7/15-7/17

Avatar had a strange never ending run that only Cameron movies seem to have. Plus, everyone wanted to see that in 3d. Now, we aren't so interested. I do not think Harry will even get close to Avatar, but Harry will still have a great run.

There's no money involved here -- I get to think irrationally.

Re: Alakaching! Harry Potter Breaks Midnight Record: Box Office 7/15-7/17

The 16 screen theater around here had it playing, sold out, on every screen at midnight, including one IMAX screen (arrived for IMAX 2 hours early and could only find two seats in the 3rd row or closer). Management actually opened up 3:00 am shows for overflow demand. I've never seen anything close to what I saw last night in terms of demand and enthusiasm.

85-90 million first day. Probably 160ish for the weekend.
