I was expecting way worse based off the reaction to the trailer, the movie doesn't look half bad. Sean Penn is playing it up as Mickey Cohen, who hasn't? The guy was a little over the top. The only hangup I have is Ruben Fleischer, I loved Zombieland but 30 Min or Less was awful.

Looks like a Newton Boys sequel.

I never buy LAPD movies set in the bad old days where they're played up as "the good guys" since historical record shows they were not.
And Mickey Cohen? Again, trying to buff him up as a tough ass gangster is a joke.
Sorry, but playing dress-up does not make you look tough. Looking tough makes you look tough.

It's kinda like how the Ancient Romans are always portrayed as good guys in movies. Every.single.time.

Actually, now that I think about it, the overall Roman Empire and culture are often given an ambiguous treatment in movies (if not made overt villains).
The protagonists however, are always "good guys."

The logo at the end of the trailer looked like a dick-and-balls building, with the title over the top of it.

I was looking forward to this, but after seeing the trailer, my enthusiasm as dropped a few notches.

Re: The Gangster Squad (2013, Gosling/Penn, Ruben Fleischer directing)

I just saw the trailer for this the other day. Not sure what everyone is talking about; it looks like it'll be a fun L.A. Confidential/Mulholland Falls type of film. I'll admit Gosling seems out of place, but I also like watching him beat the piss out of people, so I'll take it. Fleischer did well with Zombieland - I liked the visual style - but 30 Min or Less was dogshit. But since there are so few good gangster movies made these days, I'll likely see this in theaters.

My only issue so far w/ this is that..well...what are the chances that a black guy and an Hispanic guy would be on that team? I know nothing of what this is based upon.

There would be no chance of that. The movie takes place in the 40's & 50's.
The LAPD did not desegregate until 1962. Remember LA Confidential and how minorities were treated by the police.

and that was exactly what I thought of as well. That shit bothers me. I KNOW there'd be no way "a ******" and "a spic" would be on that team. I even wonder if they'll even make that part of the story..and how groan worthy whatever way they do it will be.

EDIT: it censors the "n word" but not the Hispanic one, motherfucker. I'm slightly offended.

Just say "moon cricket"; we'll know what you mean.

The horrid rap music in the trailer did throw me off, though. Way to sell this to the Scarface fanboy crowd.

Re: The Gangster Squad (2013, Gosling/Penn, Ruben Fleischer directing)

We all know by now that this trailer played infront of The Dark Knight Rises screening in Aurora. Featured prominently was a theater shootout....well Warner Bros is now having the film edited to remove that scene.

Apparently that scene is an important part of the story so not only is that scene being removed, but the script is being rewritten and there will be a few reshoots.

Per Variety

Re: The Gangster Squad (2013, Gosling/Penn, Ruben Fleischer directing)

While they're at it, is it too late to change the title to something better?

This seems fine to me, as it's being done before the film is released. It's when they do it afterwards that I don't like it.

I'm heavily assuming this has no repercussions to the flow of narrative or even quality of the film?

You're really asking that? They are making last minute changes to an important part of the script...what are the chances that makes the film better? At the very least it isn't the director's true vision.

Wouldn't want to tamper with the vision of the guy who directed 30 Minutes or Less.

Like how you chose 30 Minutes or Less over his well reviewed Zombieland
