A Bronx Tale: was DeNiro trying to emulate Goodfellas?

Just watched A Bronx Tale, and although I thought it was good, I couldn't help but wonder if De Niro tried a bit too hard to emulate/imitate Goodfellas. I mean, sans the interracial sub-plot, the whole movie was screaming goodfellas....the narraration, a young kid who wanted to be a gangster, a young kid who started doing errands for the boss, you name it.

What do you guys think of this film and its unusual similarities to GF? Was DeNiro trying to "out-Scorcese" Scorcese?

Re: A Bronx Tale: was DeNiro trying to emulate Goodfellas?

It's not DeNiro's story.

It's an autobiographical tale written by Chazz Palminteri, that he turned into a one man show/play. IIRC the play started before 'Goodfellas' was released, though they both came out the same year. A one man show has a lot of voice over required in that method of story telling.

Scorsese's film was very accurate to the novel written by the man portrayed by Ray Liotta. Scorsese did not craft the tale. It's actually surprising how accurate the film is to the novel btw.

So a complete and total "no" is the answer to both your inaccurate assumptions you proceeded on, and your question based on those erroneous assumptions.

He posed it as a question, there was no outright accusation that De Niro was ripping off Scorsese.

No No No, if it was my thread, I'd have asked "was DeNiro trying to be a black gilligan serial killer named Murdoch?"

Nobody here takes pride in their intelligence. Personally, I think my own genius is ignored. Prepare for the same, OutRun2. Stop calling me Andrew. I'm Teddy Daniels.

Re: A Bronx Tale: was DeNiro trying to emulate Goodfellas?

That is so strange that you mentioned that. A week ago my friend was trying to describe a movie she had seen but she couldn't remember the title. And as she was describing it I kept saying Bronx Tale and she kept saying "no, I don't think that was the name of it" but I was certain that she was describing Bronx Tale until I finally realized she was talking about Goodfellas. I argued with her about it for the longest time because I was sure she was referring to Bronx Tale from her description.

Re: A Bronx Tale: was DeNiro trying to emulate Goodfellas?

DeNiro certainly was ripping off Scorsese in many ways. like the scene when they beat up all those gangsters in the bar, set to old style music, has been used in many MS flicks:

The movie does look and feel a lot like his movies. no reason to hate the OP
