I can't believe the top 5 movies are all sequels. I've never even heard of the "Super" series...I can't believe they are on movie 8 already!

Not sure if you've seen the movie yet but in no way whatsoever are the kids privileged. One kid's dad is a deputy. Another's is a steel worker. They all live in a seemingly very middle to lower middle class neighborhood in a small town.
It just wasn't necessary for the plot but none of them showed any semblance of wealth at all unless having a Super 8 camera is some kind of indicator of wealth. But even so, only one kid had one.

In that time-frame, a video camera would have been way more expensive than super 8. I knew several families (including my uncle) who had their s8 camera and projector and shot a lot of home movies. It certainly wasn't a rarity.

Looks like X-men will have a 55+% drop. It looks to be following The Incredible Hulk so far. Both had similar openings and will have similar 2nd weekend drops, although Hulk was a bit higher. I do expect X-men to have a better 3rd weekend hold vs Hulk, but it looks like this is on track for $135-$140 million.
Of course, if it mirrors the first Fantastic Four, it might inch near the $150 mil area. But there's a lot of competition coming up.
I just hope whatever it earns will be enough for them to develop a sequel.

Edit: I guess Hulk was up against Wanted in its third week, but that wasn't sold as much as a comic movie as it was an Angelina Jolie movie.

The Fisher Price PXL-2000. It used audio cassettes for film. Audio Cassettes!

As a teenager in high school, I saved up from allowance/summer jobs/part-time jobs to purchase a Canon GL-1. I didn't come from a family with money, but I could see how a kid who is into film could save up for a Super 8 camera and film.

My favorite part of Super 8 was when the heroes saved the country club from the ne'er-do-wells on the wrong side of the tracks!

Oh and I thought this movie was going to do amazing box office. Looks like Transformers 3 will likely end up the big summer winner.

Re: Weekend Box Office (6/10-6/12): Super 8 opens Super Low
I'm hoping that Super 8 gets some legs from good word of mouth. Outside of people who complain about odd things like kids having super 8 versus VHS (in 1979), most people have really liked liked it (look at the user ratings on BOM and RT, for example).
BTW, I bought my first (entry level Panasonic) VHS camcorder in 1984 (or maybe it was '85), and it cost me $1200. Around that same time, I think that a decent super 8 camera would have gone for around $300-500. Buying a VHS camera of any kind in 1979 most likely would have cost upwards of $3000.

My showing (on Saturday morning) had maybe a dozen people in it, in a theater that seats hundreds.

So happy to see Midnight in Paris doing so well...it may turn out to be Woody's biggest hit in 25 years.

As for Transformers, hopefully Cars 2 (despite the negativity around here) does better.

Don't hinge your hopes on Super 8 having legs with word of mouth. Even for those who liked it it's not a "OMFG I WAS BLOWN AWAY YOU MUST SEE THIS!" flick.
