Weekend Box Office (6/10-6/12): Super 8 opens Super Low

I know it's early, but Super 8 opened in 300 theaters yesterday and did a paltry $300K. Including midnight screenings, it's made just shy of $1m. That doesn't bode well for a solid opening weekend #, so it's likely looking at a $30m (likely less) OW. I hope WOM carries it through a summer stocked with high-profile tentpoles, because it's an awesome flick that deserves to clean up.

FWIW, I saw it in IMAX last night at the biggest theater within 50 miles @ 9:30pm and there were maybe 50 people. Usually, it'd be sold out for something huge.

I, for one, am shocked that there aren't lines around the block for a movie with this exciting poster:

Is that a water tower? WOW, WHERE DO I SIGN UP!?

I don't think most people knew it opened yesterday and $30m - $35m was the estimated opening. Kind of a shame as it looks like a quality flick.

This.

The sneak preview screenings were announced, what, Tuesday? Wednesday? The only way I knew about them was reading /Film. If it wasn't for that, I would've went to the midnight screening.

The line for the midnight screening when I got out had only about 20 people in it.

Re: Weekend Box Office (6/10-6/12): Super 8 opens Super Low

The marketing didn't really provide much in terms of a hook for audiences to show up in droves. Kyle Chandler is the highest profile actor in the cast, and he's not a household name. Being quietly bandied about as this generation's ET isn't quite the hook, either. Just because Spielberg is exec-producing doesn't mean boffo box office (though he's exec-producing TF3, but that franchise has a hook regardless of who's exec-producing it). JJ Abrams has some cred in getting films green-lit, but people don't automatically show up just because he's directing it, people showed up for Star Trek due to the installed fanbase, and the hook of a reboot with a younger cast to carry on the adventures taking place in the Star Trek universe. This "Super 8" film has a director's vanity project feel to it, sort of like Zach Snyder's "Sucker Punch".

I went to a 9:15pm showing.

When my wife and I left, there were only two people in line (11:20pm give-or-take) for the midnight IMAX showing.

The marketing was garbage. I almost didn't see it because it didn't look very interesting to me, but it's one of the best movies of the year. I really hope word of mouth helps it...

There were only about 15 people at my midnight. Honestly, while I don't watch a lot of television these days, I don't remember seeing not 1 ad for it anywhere.

Perhaps people just are not into the wide-eyed wonder/innocence that was bankable in the 70's and 80's when Speilberg made these type of films.

Times change, taste change...

Re: Weekend Box Office (6/10-6/12): Super 8 opens Super Low

I was a child of the 70s/80s, grew up on all the movies that influenced SUPER 8, and I have *ZERO* interest in seeing it in theaters. Definite wait for Bluray for me.

I fucking hated The Goonies in 1985. No rush to see it again anytime soon.

Man I would be thrilled if this film finally starts the decline of the Spielberg brand. That alone would make me like the film. Not likely though.

As said above, zero interest in seeing it at all.

To be fair, the Water Tower plays a pretty significant part. I saw a 9:45pm IMAX showing last night and there was only about 50 people there - I don't know why people aren't lined up for this thing, because they should be.

Re: Weekend Box Office (6/10-6/12): Super 8 opens Super Low

I didn't know it opened a day early until somebody told me on here, and I work in an IMAX theater! So I'm not surprised that the advance day showings didn't light up the box office.

However, even our midnight last night only sold about half the auditorium, way less than a normal summer tentpole midnight in IMAX.

I hope it does well because I like Abrams and want him to have as many resources as he can get when making Star Trek 2. On the other hand I hope it flops so he realizes he needs to make his own movies, not remake Spielberg's.

Piss poor marketing for the film is going to hurt it.

Yeah, that's a great reason for hoping it does poorly.

Re: Weekend Box Office (6/10-6/12): Super 8 opens Super Low

yeah, it opening yesterday was weird and many people probably had no clue it was opening. but the budget on this movie was next to nothing. i'll bet they spend more marketing than it cost to make. it'll make over a $100 million and that should be good enough for what it is.
